    TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2010 3FEATURES

Battle of Manila and other true stories of World War IIBy Linda B. Bolido

THE PHILIPPINE Vet-erans Bank and thePhilippine Daily In-quirer announced re-cently the start of the2010 World War IITrue Stories Contest.

Now on its secondyear, the competitionaims to encouragehigh school studentsall over the country todiscover little-knownstories about the warfrom people who

were witnesses to oneof the most memo-rable episodes inPhilippine history

when Filipinosei-ther as fighters orplain citizensdis-played extraordinary

    valor, selflessness andpatriotism.

The 2010 competi-tion is being launchedin February becausethe month marks animportant milestonein the struggle to re-take the Philippinesfrom the occupyingforces of JapantheBattle for Manila.

American forces fi-nally entered Manilaabout 6 p.m. on Feb.

    3, 1945, having made

    their way into the city

from Mindoro, whereGen. DouglasMacArthur returnedand landed in Decem-ber 1944, and fromLingayen Gulf, whereother landings fol-lowed.

They were met bya sparse crowd be-cause, according tohistorian Teodoro Ag-oncillo, most of the

    Filipinos stayed in-

    doors for fear of

Japanese atrocity. But as a tank unit

liberated Americanand Allied soldiersimprisoned at theUniversity of SantoTomas campus, theevening resounded

with jubilant singingof God Bless Ameri-ca, followed by theStar Spangled Ban-ner. (The Japanese

    had converted some

of the schools in thecity into garrisons.)Most destructive

The Battle ofManila is consideredas the most destruc-tive Allied engage-ment in Asia duringWWII, and is secondonly to Warsaw,Poland, in the entire

    world.The US forces lost

about a thousandmen, while theJapanese lost 12,000soldiers. But thedeath toll among Fil-ipino civilians wasmuch higher, in factcomparable to the Hi-roshima bombing. Some 100,000 Fil-ipinos in the Manilahostilities, and yet on-ly a handful recallthis tragedy every

    year on Feb. 3themembers of Memo-rare 1945.

The fierce fighting, including heavy ar-tillery fire from bothcamps, utterly de-stroyed Manila which, before the war, wasknown as the Pearlof the Orient, withits magnificent build-ings, schools, church-

    es with unique archi-

tectural designs andcountless cultural art-works and literature.

After the battle, only a few buildingsremained intact.

Among those de-stroyed were the Leg-islative Building, Na-tional Museum andstructures within thehistoric Walled City ofIntramuros.

War historians saidthe Allied forces hadpresumed the battlefor Manila would bequick.

But the Japaneseforces in the cityfought fiercely. Theyengaged in house-to-house struggles withthe American soldiersand Filipino guerril-las. Instead of surren-

dering, manyJapanese fought tothe death, some vent-ing their anger onciviliansraping

women, bayonetingbabies, killing the el-derly and committingother acts of brutality.

There must be anuntold number oftrue stories out therethat happened duringthe Massacre inManila alone.

Those accountsand others that oc-curred in others partsof the country duringthe Second WorldWar are precisely

what the PhilippineVeterans Bank wishesto gather through the2010 WWII True Sto-ries Contest.

The contest is opento all Filipino stu-dents 13 to 18 yearsof age attending pub-lic or private highschools in the Philip-pines.

History and/or En-glish teachers are en-couraged to guidestudents interested inparticipating in thecontest. The endors-ing teachers of the

winning students willbe awarded P5,000 inPVB savings accounteach.

Deadline for sub-mission of entries is 4p.m. on March 16,2010.

In real life, Pokey says thatshe will never let money orfame take over her heart. Tamana protektahan ang pera atkatanyagan, she explains.Pero hindi dapat umabot sapunto na makalimutan mo nangumibig.
