    LOVE.LIFE

    Loving litBy Isa Lorenzo

    WHAT does literature

have to do with life? Why should I have to read po-ems and short storiesthat have no bearing onmy major subjects?

These are the questions Ihave to grapple with every day, faced with 25 (mostly)

wide-eyed freshies. I teachthe only required Englishclass that they’ll have totake, so for some, this will

be their first—andlast—glimpse of literature. How do I teach them to love

words as much as I do, to findbeauty and meaning in the pre-cise arrangement of a sonnet, tofeel a thrill over the word“exquisite”? (Me at age 6, truestory. Only I thought it was pro-nounced “e-quiste.”)

I want them to love litera-ture so much that they’ll stay upreading until three in the morn-ing. That they’ll carry the book

with them in their head as they eat breakfast, go about theirday, even until they go to bed. That years from now, they willremember lines like “Love hasits reasons whereof reasonknows nothing” (Blaise Pascal, quoted in Madeleine L’Engle’s “A Wrinkle in Time”) and use it tobolster an argument.

Words have sustained me ev-er since I was a child. Every Sunday, we went to National

Book Store where my sistersand I were each allowed tochoose one book to buy andbring home. I was told that my parents read to me every night

when I was young. As s oon as Ilearned to read, it was my turnto read to them.

Even now, good grammar isone of the things that I look forin a partner. I’m not a grammarNazi by any means, but I get sodistracted by poor spelling and

    grammar that I mentally correct

the flirty texts I receive.I’m thrilled every time I re-

ceive a love letter—in this day and age of instant communica-tion, the time and patience re-quired to pen a handwrittenmissive gets me every time.

But I was talking about liter-ature. Words have served as my constant companions. When I

was 12, newly arrived from theUnited States, I couldn’t speak Filipino, so I didn’t have any friends. I spent every afternoon

after class reading by the en-trance of my school while wait-ing to be picked up.

I remain an inveterate read-er, someone who always bringsa book with her. You neverknow when you’ll need to waitfor something, or someone, andhaving a book always passes thetime.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t wish that I could live inside anovel. I like real life—with its

    unexpected twists, its crushing

disappointments, and its suddenserendipities—just fine. I’meven in love with it sometimes.

But this is what I wish Icould say to my students: Youdon’t need to love poetry andprose in order to pass thiscourse, but I hope that some-how, over the next few months,

I will manage to transmit my love of literature to you, be-cause it will serve you well all

your life.Often, I find myself smiling

in satisfaction as I listen to my students read and argue overtexts. If I do my job well, thenthey’ll soon find their own way.

Isa Lorenzo’s favorite au-thors are Jane Austen, Chima-manda Ngozie Adichie, Mar-

garet Atwood, F. Sionil Jose , Ellen Sicat and Zadie Smith.
