May dayfrom The Avengers(2010). Why hes hav-ing panic attacks, Ihave no idea. Ithought Avengersended pretty well forTony. I thought hisgenius could handlethe sudden appear-ance of celestialdeities and aliens.

So, anyway. Theterrorist The Man-darin appears (gamelyplayed by the guy

    who formerly playedGandhi, Ben Kingsley)

    who pretty muchwreaks havoc across

the US and puts thepresident in dangerPLUS destroys almosteverything that Tonyhas. Of course IronMan and the Iron Pa-triot (or War Ma-chine), worn by Col.

Rhodes (Don Chea-dle) would solve ev-erything in a big, ex-plosive action pieceset in a nonspecificpier, but Iron Man 3 ismore than just explo-sive action, which wasalready the point of

IM2. Tony also has tobattle the appearanceof Aldrich Killian (GuyPierce) who was Pep-per Potts (GwynethPaltrow) former boss.Selos time.

The writing is ad-mirably better than

    IM2, but only mimics

    the charm of the first.

Thats not mincing forpraise, its actually

well-written, deliv-ered naturally by thekrung-krung DowneyJr. In fairness to thedirector of Kiss, Kiss

    Daniels singing brings

down the Big DomeBy Allan Policarpio

TUESDAY at 7:30 p.m., outside Smart Araneta Coliseumsgreen gate, a television crew sifted through hordes of list-less young girls to find someone willing to go on cameraand demonstrate her admiration for teen actor DanielPadilla, who was holding his first major solo concert,Daniel: Live!

It didnt take longfor a girl, no olderthan 15, to step for-

ward. She held asmall banner that said,I love u Daniel! Onthe interviewers cue,

8 SHOWBUZZ MONDAY, MAY 6, 2013Daniels singing brings the Big Domeshe hoisted the ban-ner and startedstomping her feet andshrieking: Daniel, mahal na mahal kita!

    Ang guwapo-guwapomo talaga!

All the while, othergirls gathered behindthe TV crew gigglingand itching to speakas well. Adult passers-by looked on amused, bemused.

As we entered thevenue, we saw more

girls similarly wired.Thousands more, to beexact. The sight couldmake anyone run outof synonyms for zeal-ous and wild. No

wonder they werechaperoned by theirmothers (who seemed

    just as dumbstruck).Grouped according

to club affiliation, thefans filled the Big

Dome to the rafters. They had mountedbanners on the rail-ings: Daniel Rocks,Daniel Berks andKathNiel Dreamers...We were seated in asection occupied by theKathNiel Spikers, anenergetic bunch who

jumped off their seatsat every mention ofDaniels name and ev-ery celebrity sighting.

While waiting forthe concert to start, backstage footage ofthe special guests wasshown on jumboscreens. When thecameras caughtDaniels onscreen part-ner Kathryn Bernardobeing made up and

with rollers in herhair, the fans eruptedin shrieks so deafen-

ing, we dreaded howmuch louder they

    would get once Danielappeared onstage.

    Junkyard setA little later, we

learned that, indeed, the crowd couldcrank up the decibelsmuch higher. Thestage, fashioned afteran old automobile

    junkyard, was set

    ablaze with fireworks

that signaled the en-trance of the 18-year-old heartthrob.

It goes without say-ing that the girl-heavycrowd teetered on theedge of delirium astheir crush or, in the

words of my seatmateasawa ko hopped on-to one of the makeshiftcars, and opened withQueens We Will RockYou. He marched on

with Ligaya, Ang Hul-ing El Bimbo and Ku-musta Ka.

After the first set,Daniel introduced oneof his guests, Jour-

neys Arnel Pineda, who belted out IDont Want to Miss aThing. Huge chunksof the crowd sangalong; it was a cuefor the girls to re-group and regaintheir bearings for suc-ceeding numbers.

Also on Daniels setlist were Binibini,Sisikat Din Ako, Yugyu-

gan Na, With or With-out You, and Mr. Suave, which he performedwith brothers Matt, RJand JC. He jammed

with Yeng Constantinoin Awit ng Kabataan, and joined the boysand girls of Star Magic2013 in a medley ofhits from The Beatles, like Come Together, She

Loves You, Ticket toRide and Drive My Car.

He played bass for hisband Parking 5, whothrilled the crowd withThe Killers Mr. Bright-

    side and other familiarhits.

While critics, doubtless, balk atDaniels attempt tosing such pop classics,he deserves a thumbs-up for releasing al-bums that feature oldOPM (OriginalPilipino Music) fa-

vorites and helpingintroduce the youngergeneration to songsthat, otherwise, they

    would have entirely

missed. Being sur-rounded by kidsmouthing every wordto Rivermayas Hina-hanap-hanap Kita orTeeths Prinsesa wasquite a sight.

    Unique vocalsFor a self-confessed

occasional singer,Daniel did a service-able job performinglive, although none of

the songs really tookoff because of his lim-ited vocal range. That, and the fact that hecould hardly be heardin the bedlam.

Perhaps it doesntmatter in the grandscheme of thingscer-tainly not for Danielslegion of die-hard sup-porters who made theshow possible, andhelped notch album

sales figures that mostprofessional singerscan only dream of.

Were not exactlygoing out on a limbby saying that none ofthe crazed fans thatnight at Smart Arane-ta Coliseum boughttickets to the show ex-pecting Daniel toknock their socks off

with topnotch vocals.Ultimately, it was notso much about hear-ing Daniel sing as see-

ing him sing. He couldjust stand in the mid-dle of any stage andhis fans would stillfind reason to lose it.

    Kilig momentAnother ear-pierc-

ing round of shrieksshook the venue whenKathryn, pretty in acream gown, finallyemerged, held hands

    with Daniel, and sang

Akoy sa Yo, Ikay Akinand Nasa Iyo na angLahat. Another specialguest, Vice Gandacoaxed the two to doa slow dance. And in

what was arguablythe definitive kiligmoment of the night,Daniel, lookingstraight into Kathrynseyes, slowly dippedhis partner. All hellbroke loose.

Prior to the con-cert, Daniel vowednever to sing or dancelike Justin Bieber.Well, he did some-thing betterat leastfor his fans. Helaunched into theDougie, HarlemShake, and danced toPsys Gentleman.

With a burst of fire-works and confetti,

Daniel capped theshow with Hinahanap-hanap Kita. Thus theevent ended forDaniel, but not for hisfans. Outside, theyrushed to purchaseDaniel merchandise:CDs, shirts, magazines.

A group of deliriousyoung ladies screamedin front of a camera:I love you Daniel!

    Sana may repeat!
