Tales of friendship at Read-Along Champions session

ship of a dove and an ant.The kids were really excit-ed, said special educationteacher Antonino. Kids in pri-

vate schools are so used to hav-

ing books, but here, for thesekids, these books are new and

they were excited to have some-one read to them. To them, thisis an entirely new experience. It

was very heartwarming to seethem appreciate activities likethis. They are rarely exposed tothese kinds of things.

Rovie Muyot, San Leonar-dian volunteer, said that orga-nizing their first Read-Alongsession was both exciting andnerve-wracking.

The night before the ses-sion, I kept asking my fellow

volunteers if we had forgottenanything, said Muyot, who is ateacher at San Lorenzo RuizDiocesan Academy. We are all

just relieved that todays pro-gram went well.

Roxas said he and Espornacame all the way from Manilafor Saturday mornings program. We havent slept yet, but this

event was worth it, he said.He and Esporna, like some of

the other volunteers, are youngprofessionals. Some of the

    younger volunteers are collegestudents.

    The session taught the chil-

dren the true meaning of friend-ship, particularly the importanceof defending friends and rescuingthem from harm, said Paul JohnTolentino of Mallorca ElementarySchool and Nina Manson of SanLeonardo Central School.

Marylyn Gonzales, also ofMallorca Elementary, said the les-son learned was not to pick up afight with friends, while Jallor deGuzman said it was to say sorry

    whenever they hurt somebody.

Saturdays event, hosted bySan Leonardian volunteer Nick-hole Bernandino, was held in co-operation with the San Leonar-dians of Nueva Ecija, which or-ganized the entire event.

    SHOWBUZZ TUESDAY, JULY 23, 2013 5ROMEL M. LALATA, Editor

Karel Marquez on love, sibling rivalry and career

    The three lead starsCarla

Abellana, Tom Rodriguez andDennis Trilloare making

waves. But equal credit shouldalso be given to the supportingactors like Karel Marquez, whoportrays Evelyn, the troubledand hard-up sister of Lally (Car-la Abellana). After all, the mainstars wont shine as much with-out the help of the rest of thecast. A good recipe wont workif you dont have the right mixof ingredients to begin with.

They thrive on each others en-ergy and passion, which makesthe teleserye all the more pow-erful.

Karel is at her finest onMHL. (Follow her on Instagramand Twitter @iamkarelmarquez).Here she bares her heart as anactress, single mom and as a

woman in love. What do you think makes

My Husbands Lover such aphenomenal success?

Well, to be honest, makingsuch an uncommon theme for aregular soap opera in the Philip-pines was a risk for GMA 7 todo. Its not just concentrated onthe lovers story but alsoabout family and how to deal

with our everyday lives andthe fact that it happens [andthere are] gay lovers. And sinceits a first for Philippine televi-sion, thank God, people accept-ed itall genders. I know thereare soaps like this in other

    countries at dahil were still

    known to

be a conser-vative Catholiccountry, hindi rinsiyempre tang-gap ng lahat ngtao. We cantplease everybody. But the bashing andthe praises are bothpart of the success ofthe show. And likeany movie about love, drugs, fighting,

killing, we are justtelling a story abeautiful one.

In what ways hasyour role in MHL helpyou improve as an ac-tress?

In MHL, people ask,Why do you cry so eas-ily as if gripo lang? Or,[Bakit] mukhang totoo angpag-deliver mo ng mga linya? My answer is: In real life so-brang babaw ng luha ko. I dontknow if its already a skill be-cause I can cry anytime. I reada scene and pretend Im thecharacter. I feel her pain Ibreak down in tears, say myline with all my heart and soul. For me its harder to internalizeand play the villain. So its re-freshing for me to be Evelyn inMHL a typical ate with upsand downs. I try to beat myown self in every project/rolethat I do and become better.

This is my passion. And no one

can ever take that away fromme.

What has your charactersconflict with your sister in theseries taught you about sister-hood/sibling rivalry?

Well I think no matter howtough it gets, at the end of theday, magkapatid pa rin kayo, so

you learn to forgive, to under-stand, and that family will al-

ways be there for youWhether youre successful or if

you failed at some point, its im-portant not to turn your backon family. Keep that bond nomatter what happens. There

will be times when you may

    disappoint them. But whats

crucial is to go through that dis-appointment and still stick to-gether after the storm.

Would you fall for a gayman?

I cant fall for someone whois attracted to the same sex! Imean, why would I? Straight isstraight. Bisexual is bisexual.Gay is gay. I have tons of gayfriends and I love them! Nofalling in love lang. Cant imag-ine it.

What would you do if youfind out your partner is gay?

If we have kids, ofcourse, I would, as

much as possible, try to fix it. I

would want toknow details. Buthonestly, I dontthink I wouldhandle it verywell and con-

    tinue the rela-tionship.

    If Eric,Vincent and

    Lally werereal peo-ple, what

    would beyour un-solicitedadvice to

    them?Life is short. Do

what makes you happy. Butdo not cheat for goodnesssake. Just go with the one

you think makes you happyand make sure its mutual. Butforget the cheating part.

Whats the best advice yourmom (Pinky Marquez) evergave you?

She just tells me positivethings, never to give up. Itsnever too late to do what youhave to do, and love what youlove. And at this point in mylife, I work hard for my kids.Theres nothing I wont do forthe love of my kids.

How do you handle being asingle mom?

Its not easy but its the bestthing that has ever happened to

me. Keiley is 4 and Kyler is 3. I

believe even if they are stillyoung, I must discipline themalready. But its quite hard forme to reprimand them becauseIm a naturally sweet person. Ihave to be both mom and dad. I

work double time. I try to loveand nurture them the best wayI can.

Tell us about yourboyfriend, Sean Carlo Farias?

Weve been a couple sinceDecember 2012. Hes a barowner (Dilingers, ProhibitionLiquor Lounge, Locale Gastro-bar) and a gym owner (Ulti-mate Fitness). He loves my kidsto death. Hes like a daddy tothem. To think hes a bachelor

and he comes from a prominentfamily. Im so touched that hechose to love me and be therefor me and my kids.

Whats the most importantlesson you learned from yourfailed relationship with the fa-ther of your kids?

Know my worth and knowwhen to say enough when therelationship is no longer work-ing. Stand up for myself and mykids. And just like all women, I

    deserve to be treated right.

    By Dolly Anne Carvajal

IM a certified My Husbands Lover (MHL) fa-natic. With the brilliant acting and superbcamera work, watching the soap makes me

feel like Im a voyeur in search of that certainkind of thrill that only forbidden love can bring. For other MHL diehards out there, heres goodnews relayed to me by GMA 7s top honchos An-nette Gozon-Abrogar and Joey Abacan. They willsoon release DVDs of the hit teleserye with abonus feature of scenes which were edit-ed out. They are also toying with theidea of making a movie version of

MHL. Never too much of a goodthing, huh?
