Lord, umuulan na na-man. Parang luha na pumapatak saaking mga mata. Masakit lalo napag dumanas ng kabiguan, nagka-roon ng suliranin at nawalan ng mi-

namahal. Pero nauubos din angluha. Katulad ng ulan, kusa itong tu-mitigil at sumisikat ang araw kinabukasan. Manatili sana ito sa pu-so namin. Amen (Belinda Bonagua)

    S H OWB U Z Z WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 10, 20144ROMEL M. LALATA, Editor

    A muse named Deadline

To cap 2014, the Palanca winner decided to give back by offering a scriptwriting work-shop to aspiring writers for free.

Its open to writers 18-40 yearsold. Every applicant must e-maila full rsum, with a photo, to [email protected] on orbefore 11:59 p.m. tomorrow.

Application informationshould include work experiencerelated to writing for TV, filmand/or theater, and past writing workshops attended. Prelimi-nary screening is on Dec. 14.

There are only 20 slots in the workshop.

Experience Lanas love affair with words, which knows nobounds.

    Heres my tte--tte with

Jun:What makes a good script? An intriguing story told visu-

ally and fascinating, well-delin-eated characters are two hall-marks of a good screenplay.

    How do you handle writersblock?

Honestly, Ive never had writ-ers block. I write both by inspi-ration and [out of] necessity. The former is food for my souland the latter puts food on the

table. Thus, the urge to write isalways with me.

What are three rules of writing that you live by?

First, research your story well. Dont just rely on imagina-tion. You should be fully backedup by experience and/or re-search.

Second, know your charac-ters like your own family.

Third, respect your audi-ences intellect. How do you summon your

muse? As a professional writer, I

have a name for my muse:Deadline. When youre makinga living doing something that you love, the least you can do isto submit your scripts on time.

What can aspiring writersexpect from your workshop?

What Im offering is not just

a free writing workshop but amentorship. My last workshop was four years ago. The work-shop itself lasted three months, but the mentorship took muchlonger. For me, it meant lookingfor writing opportunities for my students and, for a time, servingas their talent manager (minusthe commission), making surethat they are treated properly

and compensated very well.Whats the best-written lo-cal film of all time?

Ricky Lees screenplay of Moral left a lasting impressionon me. It taught me a lot aboutdialogue writing and characteri-zation.

Among all the powerlines youve written, whichone is your fave?

Bilisan mo. Mahapdi na ang p----- ko. From Barbers Tales.

MAYWEATHER Jr. and Pacquiao composite photo

Yes, its true: Pacquiao, Mayweather in same card 13 yrs. agoBy Teddy M. Reynoso

L IKE great ring ri- vals Sugar Ray Leonard and Mar- velous Marvin Haglerwho in 1979 fought sepa-rate opponents in thesame boxing card beforeeventually meeting eachother inside the ring years later, current-day nemesis Floyd May-weather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao shared thesame stage in a majprboxing card thirteen years ago .

    The date was November 10,2001.

The venue was the Bill Gra-ham Civic Auditorium in SanFrancisco, California.

The event was a boxing pro-

motion starring Floyd in a 12round title bout in his seventhand final defense of the WBC ju-nior lightweight championshipagainst the once-defeated Mexi-

can contender Jesus Chavez, and Pacquiao tangling with Do-minican Republics AgapitoSanchez in an IBF-WBO juniorfeatherweight title unification

    fight serving as main aperitif.

Curiously, both Floyd andManny became world boxingchampions in the waning daysof 1998 with the former win-ning the WBC junior lightweighttitle by 9th round TKO overGenaro Hernandez in November3 and Manny winning the WBCflyweight diadem by 6th roundKO of Thailands ChatchaiSasakul a month later in Decem-ber 4, 1998.

What happened in that box-ing card?

Floyd won by retirement inthe 9th round with Chavez quit-ting on his stool after the eightround following a hellaciousshellacking from the youthfuland impetuous American fromthe very first round.

While Floyd was at his usualmasterful best in dispatchingChavez, Manny in the Sanchezbout was a pitiful sight to be-hold as he was roughed up by

the Dominican from the get go

with the referee giving him allthe leeway and leniency.Manny was lucky to extract a

technical draw with the ruggedand oftentimes dirty fightingSanchez following six rounds of rough and tumble action wherehe sustained a cut over his righteye necessitating a halt to thebout and recourse to the scoringof the judges which turned outthe stalemate verdict.

    What happened after thatboxing card?

Floyd proceeded to vacatethe WBC 130 lbs. title and winthe WBC lightweight crown by decision over another MexicanJose Luis Castillo whom he al-so beat in their title rematchin 2002. After three more de-fenses, Floyd would proceedto annex the WBC junior wel-terweight title via 6th roundTKO over Arturo Gatti on June25, 2005
