Future Prospects

UNDER 15’S Acorn 30 – Wibsey 12 With the summer break approaching, Acorn under 15’s were looking to sign off with a good win having had comfortable wins in their last two encounters over the Bradford side. Acorn began with a sense of purpose that saw Billy Nicholson score after 4 minutes. The enthusiasm was then stifled when indiscipline reared its ugly head and on the back of 7 penalties in the next 10 minutes resulted in Wibsey taking the lead 6-4. Acorn again struggled until the 20

th minute before

posting their next points when Alex Smith crossed to regain the lead. Jake Calam kicked a superb kick from the touchline only to be knocked back by the referee despite the fact that the whole crowd applauded the successful kick. Acorn ran in a third before half time when Reef Wilson broke the defence and galloped in, Calam successfully converting. At the start of the second period Acorn gain found themselves defending multi-ple sets on their own goal line before ultimately allowing Wibsey back in the game. The frustration subsided and Acorn where able then to demonstrate the attacking flair they have demonstrated so often this season by running in a fur-ther 4 tries in the last 15 minutes. Jacob Walker showing his pace, followed by Lloyd Todd, capping a huge man of the match performance. Then Reece Rush-worth, strong as ever, powered over and finally Mickey Longs strong running was rewarded with the final try. Calam’s goal kicking was off the mark this week, but they were all long range against a stiff breeze. Jacob Walker was influential throughout the game and Keiren Brown also put in a superb game. UNDER 9’S Acorn 2 tries Sidall 5 tries Acorn under 9’s have been improving with every game they play however their winning run came to an end against a strong Siddal side boasting 16 players. However their resolve was to battle hard and prevent Siddal from scoring too many tries whilst working hard to breakdown the oppositions defence to get across the try line themselves. This effort was justified when at half time the score was 2 tries each. Unfortunately with superior numbers Siddal where able to bring on fresh legs and ultimately the guard was broken and Siddal finished stronger. “The boys showed a great defensive effort today, this was by far the toughest game we’ve had to date, I am really proud “commented coach Wayne Pagdin. Its always diffi-cult to select outstanding performances from such a good team effort, but man of the match was Ethan Sutcliffe, supported by Coaches Player, Luke Powell. Harry Sawyer was strong in defence achieving the top tackler award and this weeks most improved player was Mark Winn, one of the newest members of the team.

Good Evening and welcome to those that have given up their time to watch our second evening game of the season as we also welcome all from Castleford Lock Lane to Thanet Road as we try to complete the double over the Cas side following our hard fought one point win in Castleford last March and another close encounter is expected tonight as they are only two points behind us in fourth place and in the same group of teams that are chasing promotion although we have a couple of games in hand. At the moment we are sitting proudly ahead of the pack following our superb away win at previous leaders Bradford Dudley Hill a couple of weeks ago .The lads played with allot of spirit and commitment ,especially in defence, to dethrone the then league leaders. One of the reasons the side is on a high is the emergence of young Joe Budd in the half back position, a masterstroke for the coaching staff, and one that has reaped awards not just for the team but also for himself as well with a total of nine tries and four man of the match awards to his name. Our A team travel the short distance to local rivals Heworth and will be hopeful the game goes ahead especially after some of their games have had to be postponed due to lack of players a problem allot of teams have struggled with as they try to come to terms with the switch to summer rugby and one I do not see going away for the foreseeable future especially in July and through August. Enjoy the game, Mick Lumby.

York Acorn seek best cure for Magaluf hangover 10:30am Thursday 19th July 2012 in Rugby League By Peter Martini, [email protected]

A BOOZY stag weekend in Magaluf might not have been the best preparation for a vital top-of-the-table clash but head coach Scott Rhodes is hoping his York Acorn ARLC players can recover from the excesses enough to maintain their place at the summit. Acorn entertain Castleford Lock Lane tomorrow night (7.30pm) in a game billed by club chiefs not only as a huge promotion challenge but also – with a cheeky grin towards the city’s professional club – “the best rug-by league in town”. But, in a blow to their hopes, they will be missing no fewer than four players who extended their stay in Majorca to this weekend, and the remainder who flew home from key man Tom Hill’s stag do on Monday have not so far been in a state to train with much vigour. Rhodes, who also went to the Spanish island, is optimistic the bonding benefits from the beery bash will out-weigh any lingering hangovers. “I don’t know what kind of intensity we will get from the lads – there wasn’t a great deal in training on Tuesday. We know it’s an important game, though,” said the former York City Knights captain. “Lock Lane are a physical team. I’m not too sure what they will bring away from home but our mindset has to be spot-on. “It (the stag weekend) has possibly not done us the world of good but it was a good bonding session with the lads and you don’t get the chance for many of them through the season, and we’re looking forward to the game now.” Those who have stayed on holiday are Jordan Hyde, Antho-ny Chilton, Chris Rushworth and Martin Wood, while Aaron Thompson is a long-term injury absentee. “We’re missing a few but we will bring a few in,” said Rhodes, who will add Martin McTigue, Kev Brayshaw and Damien Hilton to to-morrow night’s party of a different kind. He is also hoping for a good turnout of home support following the wonderful win over title rivals Bradford Dudley Hill last time out. Acorn went top after that result, though Dudley Hill, and tomor-row’s opponents Lock Lane, are among four teams just two points behind. “We performed pretty well last time – it was probably the best I’ve seen this season,” said Rhodes. “We’re now looking for another big performance.”

Whose here to take on the Blue and Golds

Castleford Lock Lane Originally formed in 1936 the club was then disbanded during the war years but was reformed again in 1947 quickly becoming established as not only a funda-mental part of the community but also one of the countries most respected ama-teur sides. In 1958 we qualified for the Rugby League Challenge Cup. The 1960’s were lean years for the club. The loss of their famous ground The Sandy Desert led to a nomadic existence around Castleford. 1970 saw a turn in for-tunes with yet another qualification to the challenge cup with Lock Lane almost staging the biggest upset in Challenge Cup history before going down narrowly to Huddersfield. The 1980’s saw Lock lane continue to flourish, winning the Yorkshire Cup in 1982 and reaching the National Cup Finals in 1981 and 1983. Having secured the Sandy Desert once again and the acquisition of the Bath Inn soon to become the famous or infamous “Early Bath” Lock. In 1995 Lock Lane acquired a new ground, The Hickson arena, and in 1998 opened the excellent Sports & Leisure Club. Castleford Lock Lane have produced a host of top class players from there junior and youth ranks: Paul Broadbent( Sheffield Eagles & Halifax), Paul Anderson (Bradford Bulls), Grant Anderson (Castleford), Chris Bibb (Featherstone) and more recently Great Briton International and Wakefield Wildcat Gareth Ellis to name but a few that have worn the Blue & White Lock Lane shirt. Lock Lane holds a unique record for amateur clubs in the Rugby League Challenge Cup. They are the only amateur club to have qualified for the third round on eight successive seasons.

Tonight see's us return to home league action after a 5 week break in which time we have played 3 league games and seen a some major differences in performance, At St Annes we nearly threw the game away when it should have been put to bed long before they're points rush in the final minutes of the match, St Judes was extremely disap-pointing where we failed to turn up and gave as poor perfor-mance as we have done all season, and then moved on to Dudley Hill where we showed up and played extremely well to get a good 2 points away from home, grit and determination can get you a long way sometimes and I was extremely proud of all the players on the day where we played long periods of the game without the ball. Onto tonight where we have another tough encounter with our near neighbours from Castleford the first game was extremely tight and I expect nothing else to-night, they have been getting some good results and will be out to avenge their home reversal and we will definitely have to be at our best to get the 2 points, everybody in this division can beat everybody else that is reflected in the league table, we will need to gua rd against complacency this evening to maintain our good home record. Come on the ‘Corn’, Scott

The Blue and Gold’s in Action

Last Time Out: Saturday 7th July—Bradford Dudley Hill 10 York Acorn 20 Acorn turned in the performance of the season to shock league leaders Dudley Hill. In a match where the hosts dominated field position but could not handle the blue and golds attacks on the break and constant heroic defence to keep the wave of 'hill possession at bay. The home side started brightly and opened the scoring after 2 minutes when Acorn lost the ball in the tackle pressure from the scrum saw scrum half Andy Robinson score after a well worked move. Acorn hit back in the 4th minute when some smart work on the short side saw the overlap created for Matthew Woods to go over in the corner, Anthony Chilton kicked a towering goal from the touch line. Dudley Hill continued to press but flattered to deceive in attack and it was Acorn who struck next on 25 minutes when Chilton slipped the ball out of the tackle for winger Aaron Thompson to go over. On 33 minutes Stephen Mackley joined the attacking line from full back sold a superb dummy and Acorn led 14-4 at the break. Dudley Hill came out firing in the second period and their efforts were rewarded on 46 minutes when winger Gary Mezals scored wide out, hooker Nathan Kitson goaled from the side line and Acorn were hanging on to a slender lead at 14-10. With the game been now been played exclusively in the blue and golds half grit and determination was the order of the day and nothing short of monu-mental defensive was good enough to hold out the hosts. On a rare attack Acorn effectively won the game on 73 minutes when a superb Nick Speck break saw man of the match Joe Budd in support to go over wide out, crucially Chilton slotted another superb goal. The remainder of the game saw Acorn again defend-ing their line but the damage was done and they hung on for a superb victory to go top of the table. Budd took the man of the match award but Aaron Thompson, Jordan Hyde, Adam Endersby and Tim Elliott all had superb matches in an all round team effort.

York Acorn Running Club

As a Rugby Club we are proud to be hosts to the York Acorn Running Club and we would like to take this opportunity to thank the running club for their continuing support to the Rugby. We would especially like to extend those thanks this evening for the great gesture in sponsoring tonight's game.

York Acorn is a friendly, sociable, easy-going running club that was originally formed in 1982. With a mixture of ages, experience, abilities and interests (including road, trail, fell, cross-country and track) most runners will find some-thing to suit them at our club. We participate in events at a local, national and international level and our members travel from all over the York region to run together. Our members vary widely and include super fast race-winners, those setting out to achieve their own personal challenges and those who are happy with a steady run among friends. We consider the social side of our club very im-portant and many runners stay on for a chat and a drink after training. In addition to this we also meet for various other activi-ties, such as walking/orienteering events and gladly welcome new-comers interested in any of these pursuits. Whatever your interests and ability you'll find encourage-ment and support among our members. York Acorn has a partner club in the City of York Athletic Club who are based at the track at Huntington Stadium. If you join one of the clubs you automatically gain membership of the other as well. While York Acorn affiliates for road and fell, City of York affiliates for track & field and cross country. Note that these af-filiations only apply for team competition. In other words, Acorn members can run in an Acorn vest in cross country track & field events, but cannot compete for an Acorn team. However, we would prefer Acorn members competing in cross country and track& field to run in a City of York vest and vice versa. This will mean that you will need to purchase a City of York vest if you wish to com-pete in cross country and track & field events. Sorry if that is a bit complicated, but it seems to work pretty well and enables us to get very strong teams out in events such as the National Cross Country Championships and the Northern and National Road Relays.

The new summer season has so far proved a hit down here at Thanet Road , but any early joy for many an Acorn Old Boy was saddened with the passing of Barry Shillito. Born in Leeds playing his early rugby in Hunslet Barry came to the club in our second season 1974/75 in the days when hookers were hookers and had to win the ball adding vital experience to a relatively young open age side. A more than popular figure was Barry which was easily seen by the huge turn-out at his funeral last month. An electrician by trade "Shillo" put away the wire cutters to take on the role as pub landlord, and if you were involved in rugby back in the 70's/80's then you must have had many a pint in any of his 3 York pubs. A move to Bridlington proved significant for the seaside resort where he was to introduce open age rugby to the town from his Kings Arms pub. It seemed every man and his dog packed the Bishopthorpe Crematorium with former professional and amateur league players in abundance with tales being swapped long into the evening. Below is a reproduction of the press report of his first Acorn game. Acorn opened the season with a fine 32 - 2 win against Three Tuns, all Acorns new signings played well non better than Shillito ( Acorns hooker) who con-trolled the scrums allowing Nicholson a former York Albion player to run riot at half back, Dougherty ( Acorns captain) capped a tireless display with a fine try. Luckless Three Tuns had hard working forwards in Wright , and B Smith but lacked support. Scorers - tries Walker, Liddell, Shillito, Byworth, I Smith, Dougherty. Walker 7 goals - Three Tuns - penalty Hebblethwaite And yes he pulled a cracking pint- Cheers "Shillo" nice knowing you! By: ALAN BURKE (Pip)
