education in the country is caught in a tug–of-war between the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). In 2004 the country was producing around 4.5 lac engineering graduates when the same number was around 14 lac for China. So it was projected that in order to compete with China, we must produce that many number of graduates, said Mr. Basa. This jump from 4.50lac to some 14lac has been a big one and that too in a limited time. It has not been possible to manage corresponding increase in faculty & infrastructure in the available limited time. The IEI is the pioneer body to introduce a non-formal engineering education programme in the country since 1928. The IEI’s emphasis is on undergraduate education with the body encouraging funding for R & D projects. The IEI is having facilities to provide constant inputs to education planners and institutions. Emphasizing the need for engineers to constantly update knowledge, he said, the Engineering Staff College of India at Hyderabad, established by the IEI, provides training/refresher courses / continuing education

to serving engineers working in various Central and State government departments. He added that the IEI was also considering teaming up with various State Governments for undertaking training programmes for professional development of engineers.

Dr Ghananand Pande Memorial Lecture

The prestigious Dr Ghananand Pande Memorial Lecture was delivered by Prof.(Dr.) R K Khandal, Vice Chancellor, Gautam Buddha Technical University, Uttar Pradesh. He spoke on “Role of the Institution of Engineers (India) in Meeting Challenges of Technical Education”. He said that providing quality technical education to growing population of youth in India has always been a challenge. It has become more challenging in the present scenario where the capacity may no longer be a concern but capability is. of all Universities and Institutes, NBA to follow suite making accreditation of technical institutes as mandatory in the near future and focus on employability are some of the key developments worth noting here. Besides this, not even one out of approx. 4000 technical institutes of India including IITs, find place amongst the top 500 Universities / Institutes of the world. How to resolve issues related to the standards of quality of technical education? All the aspects of quality of technical education in India were
