Native Americans In North Carolina

North Carolina has largest American Indian population east of the Mississippi River.

Most Native American tribes are located around a body of water because Native American people lived off of the land. Like it is today for everyone, water was a necessity to the AI people.

Today they hold social gatherings called PowWowsThey perform traditional dances at the PowWows as

drummers drum and chant songsStyles of dance include: men’s and women’s traditional,

men’s and women’s fancy, jingle (women), and grass (men)

The Coastal Plain, Piedmont, and Mountains were home to more than 30 different Native American groups

Groups ranged in size from a few villages to thousands of members
