Ronda by the Romero family in the 17th and 18th centuries.Excursion: Ronda. Get to know Ronda duringa stroll through the city. Visit Spain’s oldest bullfighting ring and its museum. Step into theIglesia de Santa María la Mayor, a church com-missioned by Ferdinand and Isabella in 1485.The church, which was built on the site of amosque, wasn’t completed until the 17th century, so the architecture combines Gothic,Renaissance and baroque elements as well asvestiges of its Moorish history. Visit the Casa de San Juan Bosco, an early 20th century palace.This home is known for its Moorish-influencedcourtyard and gardens.Local Flavor: Take a break at a bodega, a tradi-tional wine cellar, for lunch and a wine tasting.Educational Focus: The Moors in Spain.The Moors occupied much of Spain for nearlyeight centuries, and from the arts and sciences tolanguage, they had a profound influence on thedevelopment of Spain. Even the name “Andalucía”comes from the Arabic word “Al-Andalus.”Local Flavor: Enjoy delicious seasonal and regional cuisine each evening during your stay in the paradors. Excursion: Granada. Take a scenic drive to Granada to see the Alhambra, the city’srenowned Moorish fortress and palace complex.The Alhambra, which was built in the 13th and14th centuries, overlooks the city. Admire thefountains, pools, courtyards and arch-lined walk-

ways. The interiors feature exquisite carvingsand tiles. With some restoration, the elegantarchitecture and design have successfullywithstood the Reconquest, subsequent wars,an earthquake and the general passage of time.Local Flavor: Savor a delicious lunch at therestaurant of the historic Parador de Granada,a former 15th-century convent is locatedwithin the walls of the Alhambra.Independent Exploration: Spend sometime at leisure exploring the city of Granada.

Depart Ronda for the town of Carmona andthe Parador de Carmona.Excursion: Jerez. Visit the town of Jerez enroute to Carmona. Jerez is the home of theReal Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre, theRoyal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art.Watch an elegant performance by these spe-cially trained, majestic animals and their riders.Local Flavor: Jerez also is famous for sherryproduction. Learn about the history and char-acteristics of sherry before a tasting and lunch.

Excursion: Carmona. The history of the cityof Carmona stretches far into the past. Likemany Spanish cities, it was settled by Phoeni-cians, Romans and Moors. Take a walk withinthe city wall and admire its Mudejar and Ren-aissance churches. See the Alcázar de la Puertade Sevilla, the Moorish fortress that protectsthe city’s Roman Seville Gate, and the City Hall,a former convent dating from 1621.Independent Exploration: The afternoonis at leisure.

Day Seven b | dSeville

Excursion: Seville. Discover Seville, a city immortalized in works by Mozart, Bizet andRossini. Seville is home to some of Spain’sgreatest architecture. The Moors conqueredSeville in 712. The Alcázar, built in the 10th century, was the palace of the local Muslimleader. In the 13th century, after the Spanish recaptured the city, it became a royal residence,which it still is today. The magnificent cathedralis the world’s largest Gothic building. The Barrio de Santa Cruz is a picturesque warren of medieval lanes, bougainvillea and fountains.Local Flavor: Enjoy leisure time for lunchand exploring on your own in Seville.

Excursion: Córdoba. Journey to Córdoba toexplore La Mezquita, the mosque built by Abdal-Rahman, founder of the Umayyad dynasty.Built on the site of a Roman temple-turned-church, the Great Mosque of Córdoba is Spain’sfinest example of Moorish architecture. Com-pleted in the 10th century after two centuries ofwork, La Mezquita eventually became a churchonce again in the 13th century after being

recaptured by the Spanish. Its most magnifi-cent feature is the hall with 856 columns madefrom marble, granite, jasper and onyx and connected by double-arched red-and-whitestriped arches. Afterward, take a stroll throughthe Jewish quarter, a picturesque neighbor-hood with winding narrow streets and white-washed houses with colorful flowerboxes.Continue to Alamagro, and check in to theParador de Almagro.

Day Nine b | l | dValdepeñas

Excursion and Local Flavor:Valdepeñas. Venture out of Andalucía to thetown of Valdepeñas in the Castile-La Manchaautonomous community to a winery in thisworld-famous wine region. Sample the wines

of the vineyard and enjoy a lunch featuringlocal specialties.Independent Exploration: The afternoonis at leisure in Almagro.

Travel to Madrid via Toledo.Excursion: Toledo. See the intricatelycarved façade of Toledo’s Holy Church Cathedral, which was completed in the 14thcentury after 200 years of work. Continue tothe Church of Santo Tomé to see El Greco’smasterpiece, “The Burial of Count Orgaz,” before visiting El Tránsito Synagogue and the15th-century San Juan de los Reyes monastery.Continue to Madrid, and check in to the HotelWellington.

Educational Focus: Andalucía and itsBullfighting Traditions. The city of Rondahas been influential in the history of “la corrida,” bullfighting. Learn about the Rondaschool of bullfighting, a style developed in

Spain is home to two of the world’s mostprolific wine-producing regions. Andalusía isthe land of fortified wines, the best known ofwhich is Jerez (sherry). Made from two principal grapes — Palomino, which makes a more delicate sherry, and Pedro Ximénez,which creates a fuller, sweeter wine — sherrymaking involves the art of solera, mixing old wine with new, and flor (yeast), which produces pale dry fino, nutty amontillado orrich oloroso.Valdepeñas in the south of Castile-La

Mancha produces fine white and mellow, fruityred wines in its hot, dry climate. It is known formaking aloque, a wine composed of a blend ofwhite and red grapes. Wine production beganhere with the ancient Iberians and Romans.Later, Christians took over after the reconquestof the region from the Moors and fermentedtheir wine in earthenware vats called tinaja,which are still used today.

Ronda by the Romero family in the 17th and 18th centuries.Excursion: Ronda. Get to know Ronda duringa stroll through the city. Visit Spain’s oldest bullfighting ring and its museum. Step into theIglesia de Santa María la Mayor, a church com-missioned by Ferdinand and Isabella in 1485.The church, which was built on the site of amosque, wasn’t completed until the 17th century, so the architecture combines Gothic,Renaissance and baroque elements as well asvestiges of its Moorish history. Visit the Casa de San Juan Bosco, an early 20th century palace.This home is known for its Moorish-influencedcourtyard and gardens.Local Flavor: Take a break at a bodega, a tradi-tional wine cellar, for lunch and a wine tasting.Educational Focus: The Moors in Spain.The Moors occupied much of Spain for nearlyeight centuries, and from the arts and sciences tolanguage, they had a profound influence on thedevelopment of Spain. Excursion: Carmona. The history of the cityof Carmona stretches far into the past. Likemany Spanish cities, it was settled by Phoeni-cians, Romans and Moors. Take a walk withinthe city wall and admire its Mudejar and Ren-aissance churches. See the Alcázar de la Puertade Sevilla, the Moorish fortress that protectsthe city’s Roman Seville Gate, and the City Hall,a former convent dating from 1621.Independent Exploration: The afternoonis at leisure.

Excursion: Seville. Discover Seville, a city immortalized in works by Mozart, Bizet andRossini. Seville is home to some of Spain’sgreatest architecture. The Moors conqueredSeville in 712. The Alcázar, built in the 10th century, was the palace of the local Muslimleader. In the 13th century, after the Spanish recaptured the city, it became a royal residence,which it still is today. The magnificent cathedralis the world’s largest Gothic building. The Barrio de Santa Cruz is a picturesque warren of medieval lanes, bougainvillea and fountains.Local Flavor: Enjoy leisure time for lunchand exploring on your own in Seville.

Excursion: Córdoba. Journey to Córdoba toexplore La Mezquita, the mosque built by Abdal-Rahman, founder of the Umayyad dynasty.Built on the site of a Roman temple-turned-church, the Great Mosque of Córdoba is Spain’sfinest example of Moorish architecture. Com-pleted in the 10th century after two centuries ofwork, La Mezquita eventually became a churchonce again in the 13th century after being

recaptured by the Spanish. Its most magnifi-cent feature is the hall with 856 columns madefrom marble, granite, jasper and onyx and connected by double-arched red-and-whitestriped arches. Afterward, take a stroll throughthe Jewish quarter, a picturesque neighbor-hood with winding narrow streets and white-washed houses with colorful flowerboxes.Continue to Alamagro, and check in to theParador de Almagro.

Educational Focus: Andalucía and itsBullfighting Traditions. The city of Rondahas been influential in the history of “la corrida,” bullfighting. Learn about the Rondaschool of bullfighting, a style developed in

Spain is home to two of the world’s mostprolific wine-producing regions. Andalusía isthe land of fortified wines, the best known ofwhich is Jerez (sherry). Made from two principal grapes — Palomino, which makes a more delicate sherry, and Pedro Ximénez,which creates a fuller, sweeter wine — sherrymaking involves the art of solera, mixing old wine with new, and flor (yeast), which produces pale dry fino, nutty amontillado orrich oloroso.Valdepeñas in the south of Castile-La

Mancha produces fine white and mellow, fruityred wines in its hot, dry climate. It is known formaking aloque, a wine composed of a blend ofwhite and red grapes. Wine production beganhere with the ancient Iberians and Romans.Later, Christians took over after the reconquestof the region from the Moors and fermentedtheir wine in earthenware vats called tinaja,which are still used today.
