Dear Mary Star of the Sea Parishioners:

I wish you all a Blessed Advent, a beautiful time of year when we prepare ourselves spiritually for the coming of the Christ Child at Christmas. These four weeks offer us an opportunity to slow down and reflect on the true meaning of Christmas and the reality that God so loved the world that He sent His Beloved Son as a babe to save us from our sins. What a remarkable gift to each and everyone of us. I encourage all to take the spiritual opportunity this Advent to grow closer to Christ especially through Confession and Holy Mass, thus preparing ourselves for the “Adventus” the Coming of the Babe of Bethlehem, Christ Our Lord. This time of year we see a great deal of Angels in art and elsewhere. I thought it might be helpful to learn about them and how much they do for us here on earth as well as in Heaven.

Have a Blessed Week.

Fr. Harrigan Pastor

Pancake Breakfast Humor A mother was preparing pancakes for her sons, Kevin, 5, Ryan, 3. The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake. Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson. "If Jesus were sitting here, He would say, 'Let my brother have the first pancake. I can wait.'" Kevin turned to his younger brother and said, "Ryan, you be Jesus!"

JUBILEE—YEAR OF MERCY-PILGRIMAGE IN ROME

Pope Francis announced the Holy Year of Mercy, which begins on December 8th, 2015. The Pope typically announces a jubilee every 25 years. The main focus of this Holy Year, is to evoke the concept of forgiveness. In this spirit St. Anthony Croatian Catholic Parish will organize a pilgrimage to Rome. Between March 31st and April 11th, 2016, under guidance of Fr. Goran Jovicic. During our pilgrimage in Rome we will participate on Saturday April 1st, at the conference about Divine Mercy, pilgrimage to the Holy Doors and at the Vespers with Pope Francis. The culmination of this event will be the Divine Mercy Sunday's celebrations with the Pope. During our trip we will be visiting the holy sights, and the tombs of the Apostles. Our next destination during our pilgrimage will be Assisi and/or Padre Pio's tomb in San Giovanni Rotondo. This a great opportunity for our spiritual growth and to know each other better. Our pilgrimage last year was an unforgettable life's experience! I would like to encourage our parishioners and all other brothers and sisters in faith who are interested to participate. Croatians and Italians could stay in their countries after our pilgrimage to visit their relatives. Registrations are at our Office (only Tuesdays and Thursdays) at 213 628 2938 and at: [email protected]

SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT John's preaching of the coming of the Lord is a key theme of the Advent season. As John's message prepared the way for Jesus, we too are called to prepare ourselves for Jesus' coming. We respond to John's message by repentance and reform of our lives. We are also called to be

prophets of Christ, who announce by our lives the coming of the Lord, as John did.

As we reflect on the readings we realize that our own role is not unlike that of John the Baptist. Like him, each one of us has a mission to communicate the Spirit of Christ and his message of hope, love, freedom and peace to others. We are called to help people fill their valleys and make their rough paths smoother. It is amazing the way a word of affirmation and encouragement can work wonders in another person's life and can be a real witness to Christian JOY.

THANKSGIVING MASS Thank you to all the families of the Religious Education Program who donated a large number of grocery bags of food for Christian Care when they celebrated a Thanksgiving Mass on Wednesday, November 18, 2015.
