SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING MAY 9TH 11 am Notice has been given that a special General Meeting will be held on May 9th at 11am. To the best 0f our knowledge no formal changes to the rules have been invoked since incorporation on August 21st 2001. We live in a new social-economic environment and our rules badly needed an overhaul. Steve was adamant that they should be brought up to date reflecting our current environment. This has been done, colour coded to show changes, and copies are available from Jocelyn, our Secretary, on 022 0934 114. So, we ask you to join us so that these updates can be ratified. At the end of the day it is your club and we wish it to be run on a totally professional basis and ratifying these rules will be a giant step forward in that direction. Note— Only financial members have speaking/voting rights. Please register on arrival and you will receive a voting card. There will also be a desk set up for anyone wishing to pay there subs on that day.

As Winston Peters said to the PM in the house after his election victory in Northland;

“Boo – I’m back”. Steve and Garry approached me to see if I would assist with the compilation of a newsletter. I

therefore trust that you enjoy what I have been able to put together. At this point I must record my

thanks to Trish Heming for her support by way of data and photos etc. She is currently on the

Executive and she looks after our social media outlets naming Website, Facebook and Twitter. I

have to record though at this point, that while social media is important, I hold a very strong view

that a large proportion of our members especially those who sit in the maroon seats at home on Sat-

urday’s never use the social media outlets. What they want is to be kept informed the old fashion

way by newsletter every now and then. We have to learn to understand the demographics of our

membership and while there is a large number of members who are avid users of social media there

is just as large number of the members who do not go near the machine at all. It is a matter of

balance ensuring that all aspects of communication to our members is achieved. Pass your thoughts

onto Steve and Garry as it is important that we get it right. A couple of years ago Steve started a

Carterton Rugby Academy which has turned out to be a cracker. Accordingly, there has been some

real successes at the Academy. Jacko Hull has a dual role in being part of our Academy and he has

progressed to the Wairarapa Bush Pre Season open training squad - Congratulations to Jacko.

Daryl Pickering was one of the younger ones when he started and he too has progressed

exceptionally well being selected in the Heartland under 20’s team in season 2014.

Sincere congratulations to him as well.

Moving onto our own club the Premier team seems to have so much good talent and is exceptionally

well led by Johnie McFadzean. It seems to me that, in the two games so far, the pace of the games

has lifted. We have been well placed in both matches but just seem to be missing the X factor. The

occasional lapse and we pay the price but giving credit where it is due when you see them run on

they are a credit to the coaching staff and there is commitment which sometime in the past has been

lacking. They will come right and when they do it will be a pleasure to watch because we have some

exciting players. Steve has mentioned Ollie and we wish him well. The good news is Andy

Humberstone is due to arrive from the UK in or on April 28th. He is a mid field back so fingers

crossed that he will bolster our ranks a little and most probably all things being equal will play his

first home game on May 9th Old Timers day. The 3rds look to be a very good unit this year with a

lot of depth and experience. Their camaraderie has been a feature of their play and the unity

between them all makes for the successes they are having on and off the field. Two good wins to

start the season is one hell of a good start. The down side from a lot of outsider’s points of view is

they have a bye on Old Timers Day. In regard to Old Timers Day it is worth mentioning that the

Rugby Union in its wisdom has decided that all Old Timers Days should be completed by the end of

the first round; that has put a lot of pressure on all clubs not just us. In closing membership is the

core of our club combined with a great family atmosphere. As far as the game is concerned players

respond to that atmosphere and to supporters. It therefore follows that the more support we can

generate the stronger the club becomes. Membership covers all parties details of which are listed on

page 6 , so help us and your club by recruiting a member or two. Remember if you are a member

you can hire the facilities for private functions at very, very economic rates. Take time out and sign

someone up today.

The 2015 season is underway and we have four new faces on the committee

including a new President, Secretary and Treasurer; new management in both the

Premiers and Reserves; and new personnel in the kitchen and bar.

It is therefore with pleasure that I list/advise you of my Executive. Jocelyn (Joss)

McKernan, Secretary, Robyn Cherry-Campbell, Treasurer, George Rodger, Club Manager,

Neil Rodger, JAB, Lyndon Beale, Union Delegate. The balance of the Executive is Garry

Smith, Trish Heming, Gavin Hodder, Kerry McGhie and Jeff Jones. It is no wonder that

things got off to a slower than normal start but everyone has settled into their work and our

first home game hosting Gladstone was a very successful day on all fronts. It is very

heartening to see that the player numbers for both the Premiers (24), Reserves (30+) and JAB

(100+) are considerably higher than last year and for this I must congratulate Zeb Aporo,

Higgy Wilkes, Neil Rodger and their management for their early season dedication and hard

work. The Premiers have Zeb as Coach being assisted by Dean Cadwallader and Dylan

Higgison with Rhys Scott as Manager. The Thirds are coached by Graham Wilkes assisted by

Eddie Namana and managed by Tony Goodall.

I would also like to mention that Ollie Terblanche, our South African import player from the

2014 season is progressing well after his serious neck injury and we wish him all the best in a

speedy recovery.

As a past coach of various Carterton rugby teams I have experienced many highs and lows but

through it all there was one phrase of dual meaning that kept me on course and I

sincerely intend continuing this in my role as President:

- CTB: Communication, Trust & Brotherhood or as the players prefer to say............. C-TOWN

JAB 2015

This year the JAB will field a team in every grade from the 90 plus kids already registered.

We are extremely excited about our new playing gear which has been made possible by our new

major sponsor WBS. Thanks WBS!

Over the last 6 weeks we have been running skills training sessions once a week for all JAB players

(currently Sunday's from 10am to 11am) this will continue right up to the season kick off on the 9th

of May.

Venues for the teams are as follows;

U11- Home & Away

Notable achievements We have two sets of brothers and one set of cousins. Photo above of the McFadzean brothers. Lachlan, a farmer working alongside is father John at Glenburn Station played for Carterton Premiers from 2011 until 2013 and is back again in Maroon after a year in Australia Johnie has played about 90 games over 6 seasons and will become a Centurion for Carterton this year. Johnie farms at Glenbrae, west of Carterton Corey lives in Wellington and is training to be a teacher. This is his first year playing for Carterton Premiers. The second set of brothers is Daniel and Brandon Giddens sons of our loyal supporters in Peter and Jenny Giddens. The third is a set is/are cousins in Jacko Hull and Johnny Hull The last one takes the gold medal. The Daysh family takes pride of place within our club with this absolutely amazing historical achievement. With the passing of Jim Daysh we noted that Jim’s father Vic Daysh played for Carterton, Jim Daysh played for Carterton and Jim’s son Gary Daysh played for Carterton. Then Gary’s three sons Jeremy, Ruben and Liam also played for Carterton. We are now informed by Gary’s wife Ann that a fifth generation granddaughter Emily Daysh is now playing in the Ripper Rugby Grade. Five generations from one family quite an outstanding achievement.

REPORT

This was probably one of the better first up performances in the last couple of years. The loss

was disappointing but it could be argued that the team did enough to win but just needed to

convert some of the opportunities created. The backs performed well on defence and attack

with Corey McFadzean playing very well. The forwards had the set play edge and Johnie

McFadzean continued his 2014 form. The winning and losing of the game was at the tackle ball

and Gladstone to their credit won this contest.

REPORT

This match was a real credit to both players and team management. There was an abundance of

players and a mix of youth and experience. The standard of play was well beyond Reserve Grade

level especially when you consider it was the first competition game for the season. The forwards

were particularly effective at the maul and one off close runners. The backs had a simple plan to

put the ball through the hands, run straight and support the ball carrier which as the score indicates

they did very well.

I am more than aware that this is a rugby newsletter but I feel it is time we remembered. We

did in 2013 (photo above we will excuse Lachlan for having his hands in his pockets) with the

officials and players marching and this time I believe we should show some solidarity and

March as a Club. This year in particular is the 100th

anniversary of the Gallipoli landing and

there is not a more appropriate time. We may never know exactly how many of our local men

fought in the Gallipoli campaign but we do know that 89 died there. Most were Main Body men

who left on October 1914 and did not return. They say time heals most wounds so why not join

the Club Executive and players in a March from the council building on Holloway Street to the

Cenotaph ( due to post operative knee replacement issue/problems I cannot march ) on

Saturday April 25th

at 10.45am. Note Players and Officials please wear your no 1’s.

Solidarity is a key feature of any strong club; so join us to commemorate their sacrifices. The

main photo is of an original poppy what was picked in Flanders Field in 1924 by one Col John

McCrae and he wrote the above poem to commemorate same.. I can only assume he is or was

a local as the poppy is part of the ANZAC memorabilia in the display cabinet at the RSA’s

corner in the South Wairarapa Workingmen’s Club.
