FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

My Dear Friends, Early on in his papacy, Pope Francis was asked, “Who is Jorge Mario Bergolio?” The Holy Father responded with four simple words, “I am a sinner.” As we begin Lent, may we begin with the same recognition: we are sinners in need of God’s mercy. Today’s readings take us into the heart and darkness of sin for it is the devil himself that tempts Adam in the first reading and then Jesus in the gospel. One man lets sin into the world. The other casts sin out. Today we are called to recognize that like Adam, we were made in God’s image and likeness, given the breath of life by God himself, formed so delicately in the palm of his hand, and placed on this earth simply to love. The devil will try to distract us, tempt us, and steer us away from this love. But how do we react to temptation: like Adam or like Jesus? As we hear in today’s second reading: “For just as through the disobedience of one person the many were made sinners, so through the obedience of one the many will be made righteous. (Romans 5:19)” Sin has a way of casting a spell over us. We know we’re not supposed to do something, but we do it anyways. Sin rears its ugly head in so many ways that are alluring and attractive, and we fall over and over again. Aren’t we blessed that we have a God who forgives us over and over again? Sin can take many forms. It can be an addiction that cripples us like an illness. It can be a nasty habit that we can’t seem to shake. It can be something that we may consider benign yet damages our relationship with the Lord. In whatever way that sin traps us, we must approach it with the determination

and the faith that only Jesus Christ can set us free. If we are victims of addiction, we are powerless. Only God can deliver us. If we are trapped in a persistent state of sin, only God can deliver us. We hear of the temptations of Adam and Jesus, and we are reminded of the last part of the Lord’s Prayer: “…and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.” Surrender. Not to the sin, but to the Savior. You can’t conquer evil on your own. You need the Conqueror of sin and death. Don’t fool yourself into thinking that you can do this on your own: you can’t. You need God’s mercy and grace. You need the sacrament of reconciliation. Today the Lord is inviting you to defeat the Evil One and return to this table. As a pastor, I love seeing my church filled with sheep who gather for the banquet, but I love it even more when my sheep actually participate in the banquet by receiving Holy Communion. So what’s holding you back from going to confession? We’ve added an extra hour of confessions on Wednesday afternoon from 6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. and even more confessions will be offered as we get closer to Holy Week. Again, what’s holding you back? There is a healing that you cannot possibly imagine that is waiting for you in the confessional. Do not be ashamed of your sins like Adam and Eve were, rather, stand up to those sins and return to the table of the Lord by going to confession this Lent. God bless you all,

Fast and abstinence: The holy season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. Both Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, are days of abstinence from meat for all who are 14 years and older. They are also days of fast (one full meal and two small meals, with nothing eaten between the meals) for adults from 18 to 59 years of age. All Fridays of Lent are

days of abstinence from meat for those 14 years and older.

Beginning on Wednesday, March 4th, and on every Wednesday of Lent, we will be offering confessions from 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm. Right after the 5:30pm Mass ends, the celebrant will expose the Blessed Sacrament for a Holy Hour. During that Holy Hour, two priests will make themselves available for confession.

WORSHIPPING THE LORD | ADORANDO AL SEÑOR

Though Adoration Hours have been extended until 4:30pm on weekdays, our long-term plan is to have regular hours of Adoration into the evening and eventually, to launch Perpetual Adoration.

In order to accomplish this goal, we are asking parishioners to sign up now as Adorers. This will ensure that the Blessed Sacrament is never left alone in the Chapel

and will also allow us to plan for the eventual roll-out of evening hours.

At least one Adorer should be present at all times, though, of course, the Chapel is large enough to accommodate several Adorers. At this time, we are asking those who are able to commit to either half an

hour or one full hour of Eucharistic Adoration to begin signing up for their desired dates/times.

A binder is now located in the Vestibule of the Church for those wishing to commit to a regularly recurring daily or weekly time slot (i.e., EVERY Monday, from 11am to 12 Noon).

We have also created an online sign-up which will allow you to quickly and easily select multiple dates and/or times. This is best for those who cannot commit to a regular time slot

or for those whose schedule varies from week to week.

Please visit our parish website to access the Sign-Up!

For more information, please contact Angelica Santibáñez at [email protected] or Jorge Santibáñez at the Parish Office.

Rediscovering the Mass, Part II

SAINT KATHARINE DREXEL (1858-1955) Feast Day — March 3rd

Born into Philadelphia society, Katharine was an infant when she lost her mother. Her father remarried and the couple taught their daughters that their wealth was a “gift on loan” to be shared with the poor, whom they fed and cared for in their home. Invited by priest friends to witness firsthand the destitution on Native American reservations, Katharine resolved to devote her inheritance to this apostolate and enter a contemplative order. When, however, in private audience, she begged Leo XIII to send missionaries to staff the schools she was building, the pope replied, “My child, why not become a missionary yourself?” Katharine renounced a twenty-million-dollar fortune and founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, adoring Christ present in the Eucharist and ministering to Christ suffering in victims of racial discrimination. Her Sisters established over sixty schools nationwide, including Xavier University, New Orleans, the first dedicated to professional education for African Americans. In 2000, John Paul II canonized “Mother Drexel,” praising her “excellent example of practical charity and generous solidarity with the less fortunate, long the distinguishing mark of American Catholics.” —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J.
