Who We Are... Sharing the Planet ...
Tohoku International School students are able to apply their learning beyond the classroom. Teachers lead field trips around the Sendai area to allow students to learn and experience more about the region. Often a highlight of the year, students look forward to participating in annual ski trips. Excursions – both domestically and abroad are also provided for Secondary students. In our unique Secondary School Global and Personal Action course, students are challenged to find solutions to some of the greatest issues facing the world today. We look for solutions and explore ways to inform the community about issues to make a difference.
School TripsTohoku International School provides a comprehensive academic program from Kindergarten through Grade 12 for families who seek a quality, challenging, university preparatory education in English for their children. Our staff is a highly qualified team of international educators who are dedicated to the success of students.

At Tohoku International School our core values, or schoolwide learner outcomes, are promoted through our uniquely developed 5 STARS: Responsible, Communicator, Risk-Taker, Open-Minded, and Knowledgeable. The TIS Curriculum defines what we expect all students to know, understand and be able to do. The STARS define what we expect all students to become and consistently demonstrate through guidance, advisement and mentoring from teachers and peers.
Tohoku International School is a vibrant community of learners using a variety of tools to deepen and extend knowledge of the world. Students have opportunities to learn individually as well as in a range of groups.
Secondary School students (Grades 7 – 12) take a variety of courses, including English, History, Science, Mathematics, Japanese, Global and Personal Action, Physical Education and Arts (Performing, Visual or Digital). Our experienced English as an Additional Language (EAL) team assists students to succeed in our all-English classroom environment. Tohoku International School is an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (IB PYP) school. As an international community, we believe we learn best with, and through one another. This includes teachers, students, parents and the wider community. Learning is viewed as both an individual and collective process, done best through hands-on, meaningful, and relevant inquiries into the world. Our carefully designed Programme of Inquiry is holistic, with equal value given to the sciences, math, literacy, social studies, the arts and 21st century technology skills. Through integration and differentiation, we meet the needs of a diverse classroom, providing opportunities for self-expression, reflection, and taking meaningful actions. Instruction is in English with a strong value placed on continued development of students’ mother tongues. Along with developing skills necessary for academic learning, we believe strongly in helping students to embody the characteristics of the IB PYP Learner Profile, which incorporate our 5 STARS.

Early Years Programme
Kindergarten (Early Years Programme) is an important introduction to the PYP. Our Kindergarten encourages and supports young children to become natural inquirers. Children learn language, mathematical and social skills through meaningful play and carefully designed activities, which enhances social, emotional and physical development.
Program of Learning
The IB PYP framework is used to guide students’ studies. Elementary school subjects include Language Arts, Mathematics, Units of Inquiry (Social/Cultural Studies and Science), Physical Education, Art, Music, and Japanese Language. Computer technology skills are integrated into course work throughout the grades. English as Additional Language (EAL) students are accommodated into the regular classes, with additional in-class and small-group English support as required.
