President’s Corner…

Hello Everyone, I hope that you and your loved ones are feeling

well. Unfortunately, our seminars for 2020 have had to be

She contacted Cindy Harrison and Carolyn has worked

tirelessly to put on line classes together for us.

A wide variety of styles are represented in these

offerings. Acrylic and color pencils both prevail. We be-

gan with Tricia Joiner offering her Daisy lesson. We were

so impressed with Tricia that it was a natural desire to

month we have Lynne Andrews. And soon Janelle John-

son, Cindy Harrison and Erica Joann. Lynne will offer a

class June 28th and again in September.

Please keep in touch with us and stay creative.

We are here for you. And we hope to be able to get to-

gether before too long.

God Bless you all. And special thanks to Carolyn!

Hello White Mountain members, It is unfortunate we have not been able to meet as a group in awhile. There are varying opinions on this, but as I used to say, that decision is “way above my pay grade.” Until State Governors make a decision regarding group gatherings, I hope you all remain healthy. I agreed to chair the 2021 nomination committee for White Mountain next year and as a result I am reaching out to our members, to say we as a decorative painting organization need your help. Dis-closure of candidates and elections will take place at our November 2020 meeting. A formal candi-date roster will also be published in a newsletter.

Carolyn’s Corner

Hello membership,

In my lifetime, there has never been a time when people have been requested to stay at home for such a long period of time. I hope you are all healthy and coping well. Personally, I have been painting a lot and finishing many UFO’s that I have had for years. I’ve challenged myself to complete 5 un-dones, and if I meet my goal, I’ll treat myself to start a new project. I have one more to finish.

Moving forward, all of our planned in-person meet-ings and painting programs have been cancelled until our November 15, 2020 general meeting. We did not make this decision lightly.

In these changing times, your board members put their heads together to explore options. The best option that ensures social distancing is to hold paint-ing events online. We are fortunate that Cindy Har-rison has the knowledge to navigate Zoom and she has agreed to host and moderate various teacher pro-grams for us. Previously, we sent out a survey and the responses came back to say our members were interested in acrylic, colored pencil and watercolor. At least, these three mediums were the front run-ners. With no further ado, let me share the teacher schedule:

June 28, 2020 (Sunday) – Lynne Andrews (Members fee $25.00). Peace and Plenty is the name of Lynne’s design. This class is full but there are seats available in the repeat class on July 12.

July 11, 2020 (Saturday) - Erika Joanne (Members fee $46.00). Includes the home delivery of two hard-copy packets to your home.

August 16, 2020 (Sunday) – Cindy Harrison (Members fee $25.00) . Six florals and the packet is called Bloomin’ Blossoms.

September 21, 2020 (Sunday) – Lynne Andrews companion piece to her June 28th design (Members fee $25.00)

October 3, 2020 (Saturday) – Janelle Johnson (Members fee $25.00).

December 6, 2020 (Sunday) - Nancy Scott (a new ornament design is being decided TBA)

Non-members will pay the unsubsidized fee of $50.00, Erika Joanne is $51.00. Discounts are defi-nitely a perk of being a guild member. Thus far I have not seen any other guild offering its members

programs like this. Does this mean we are pioneers?

We want to give our members the first opportunity to register for these classes, and we understand that funds may be tight for some members. This pan-demic has definitely crippled the world’s economy in many ways. May not be ideal, but if you are interest-ed in attending one of these classes, don’t hesi-tate. Members may post date their checks, so they can be cashed one week prior to the online class date. We hope this gives you some flexibility.

In time, I’m confident things will get better and we will once again be able to get close to family and friends. Until then, may you all remain healthy and safe and please keep those brushes, pencils, etc. dancing.

Best regards,

Carolyn

ARTFUL WEBINARS Reinventing the way we learn!

Visit Cindy Harrison’s website to sign up for her newsletter and follow her on Facebook. She has a wonderful schedule of Artful Webinars with our favorite artists including a watercolor class: French Poppy with Fran Mittlestet on June 20. Don’t delay, some of the webinars are already sold out. Cindy is probably one of the most experienced Zoom/Webinar hosts in decorative painting. Some of us had our first experience with Zoom when the last day of Arlene Linton’s seminar was snowed out. Recently she hosted our Chap-ter seminar with Maxine Thomas. Thanks, Cindy!

Handy Tips What makes painting and life easier for you? Send tips to [email protected] Thanks, once again, to Janice Fusco: Glitter...Love it or Hate it? Love the look glitter adds but it gets every-where. As good as we are about clean-ing up the shiny stuff there is always some residue that defies our best ef-forts. To pick up those last pesky bits use a Lint Roller. Roll it over your work surface and voila glitter is gone. Alas this will not work for that stray single grain of glitter that somehow sticks to our faces that someone will point out....."Have you been using glitter?" Some of the tips Cynthia Erekson has been posting on Facebook: If you're painting on fabric, you may want to make these two items your "new best friends"... First, iron the shiny side of the freezer paper to the back of your fabric to stabi-lize it. Then, use the Sewline Rollerball Trac-er, along with your usual tracing and transfer paper, to transfer your design onto the fabric. The Rollerball Tracer will NOT rip your tracing paper. You can find this handy dandy tool online...it is a quilting tool, but, hey...why not?! It works... If you’re painting ornaments and need to “frost” a glass or plastic ball you can use DecoArt Dazzling Metallics White Pearl and Matte Decou-Page. Squirt puddles of both products onto your palette. Using a large, soft stencil brush scoop up some of each product. You don’t need to mix them... just start pouncing the brush on the ornament and they will mix as you pounce. Work a small area at a time and then, move to a new area reloading the brush as needed. The first coat will not adhere that well, and will appear spotty. Let it dry and apply one or two more coats to achieve full coverage. You’ll end up with a frost-ed, pearlescent surface with good tex-ture... a perfect background for your chosen design!

WMDPG Activities - Palette Potpourri

We would love to see what you’ve been doing. Please email to

[email protected] Please feel free to also post your work on our White Mountain Face-book page where it can be seen by the public. If you do this, it shows people what a fun and active group we are so they will want to join!

Zoom Class with Maxine Thomas - May 21, 2020 Thanks to volunteering with the OLLI educational organization, I’ve been doing a lot of zooming late-ly. Although I prefer the larger screen on my desktop monitor for a class, I had to add a web camera/microphone which cost about $50. My old iPad purchased around 2013 still works fine and like oth-er tablet type computers is already all set up for Zoom. If you have a smart phone you can also con-nect with zoom but you might not be able to show the teacher your work for evaluation. I have not tried out a Kindle Fire for zoom but understand that they work, too. You can use a land line phone to call in to join a Zoom meeting but you would not have any video. I like attaching my iPad to a 360 degree rotating case. This allows me to angle it in either the land-scape or portrait position. My iPad uses battery up quickly so it is best to have it plugged in. I rushed around and borrowed my husband’s longer cord but I could also have moved the table clos-er to the wall outlet. Duh! My painting gear is set up for a left handed person. I’m trying out a plastic palette purchased at Michael’s. Tricia uses a glass palette to avoid picking up wax from a waxed palette. Aubuchon hardware still has shop towels for sale and we definitely need a damp towel for a 4-5 hour class. For Tricia’s class I had tried using an artificial chamois cloth but it was too absorbent. During Zoom, it is best to choose “speaker view” so you always have a good close up of the teacher and what she is doing. I find this is a very comfortable way to have a painting class since we don’t waste time going up in groups to see what the teacher is doing. There is also no chance of sitting next to a grumpy painter. It is fun to see each person’s work when Maxine checks each individual. You hold your piece up to your camera. It is also fun to switch to “gallery view” when there’s a rest break so you can see who else is in the class. I don’t know how much longer we will only be able to do Zoom classes but I think I prefer them. There’s no extra expense of staying at a hotel but the down side is far less socializing at lunch or over dinner. But also no worry about having a class or meeting cancelled due to snow. - Donna Frost
