18 Crane Carrier Handbook

Getting cranes to theworld’s most remote jobsites can be a monu-mental task, but Mani-towoc has a long historyin doing just that. One re-cent example requiredthe company to draw onits lengthy shipping ex-perience and utilize itsstrong dealer network todeliver two Grove cranesto Zanzibar, Tanzania.

A Grove YardBossYB5518 industrial craneand a Grove RT880Erough-terrain crane wereshipped to the main portof Unguja, one of the two islands that comprise Zanzibar.

Manitowoc and TTD’99, its dealer in Tanzania, mapped out an 87-day journey for thecranes. The route took the cranes from Baltimore, Md., in the U.S., via Durban, SouthAfrica, through Mombasa, Kenya before they eventually landed in Zanzibar.

The final leg of the journey from Mombasa to Zanzibar had to be made on a speciallychartered landing craft because of the shallow draft of Zanzibar’s port, plus the fact thatthere were no dock cranes to unload the two cranes.

Before submitting their tender, TTD’99 and Manitowoc analyzed ZPC’s unique needsat its port. Having studied lifting requirements and available space, the company suggestedtwo cranes to cover operations, the Grove YB5518 and the RT880E.

The cranes are handling general breakbulk cargo that is either entering Unguja or re-quires transshipping to other islands. The RT880E is ideal for the Zanzibar port becauseit combines heavy lifting power, rugged construction and a tight turning circle. It has a 75t capacity and a 39 m boom.

The YB5518’s small footprint and maneuverability make it ideal for the congested portthat requires speedy loading and unloading. Its ability to offer two-wheel, four-wheel orcrab steering makes it even easier to navigate tight work areas. The crane has a 16.3 t ca-pacity and 16.6 m boom.

Jan van Liere, owner of TTD’99, said doing business in Tanzania can be tough, butManitowoc and its dealers are committed to customer satisfaction. As testament to therapidly growing Tanzanian market, TTD’99 has delivered two more cranes to the country:a Grove GMK2035E all-terrain crane and a RT9130E rough-terrain crane. ZPC plans topurchase more Grove cranes as its operation expands.

Sterett Crane and Rigging re-

ceived the contract to plan and exe-

cute the tedious task of placing the

322-ft (98.1-m) span onto a deck

barge, float it down the Tennessee

River and lift it into place from the

water. Sterett moved its new Terex

CC2800-1 crane nearly 800 mi

(1,287.5 km) from the Port of Balti-

more directly to the Kentucky jobsite.

The RT555-1 pulled double duty by

assisting with the CC2800-1 crane

rigging as well as bridge assembly.

Sterett’s crews began loading the

bridge span onto the deck barge on

May 14. The crawler cranes were

then positioned on their barges and

then the parade of bridge and lifting

equipment barges navigated nearly

30 mi (48.3 km) of river on their way

from the Eddyville Port to the

Eggner’s Ferry Bridge site. Crews

positioned the crawler crane deck

barges upstream from the bridge,

while the new bridge span was lo-

cated on the downstream side.

Barge spuds were lowered to main-

tain positioning in the river.

Finishing Touches

After the new bridge span was

placed on its piers, one final hurdle

remained – deck paving. On May

20, crews began pumping a Class

AA 4000 PSI concrete mix onto the

new span with a Terex® Bid-Well

3600 paver, which was equipped

with its swing leg option to deliver zero clearance paving. On May 25, the Eggner’s Ferry

Bridge was, once again, ready for traffic, two days ahead of schedule.

Crane Carrier Handbook 23 22 Crane Carrier Handbook

AURORA, KENTUCKY, July 13, 2012 –

Extreme circumstances demand quick and

decisive action. In January, a cargo ship

struck a section of the Eggner’s Ferry Bridge

that crosses the Tennessee River near

Aurora, Ky., destroying a 322-ft (98.1-m)

span of the 3,495-ft-long (1,065.3-m) bridge.

Within hours, a team from District 1 of the

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet went into

action to inspect the bridge piers and start

the process of distributing a bid request to a

list of approved contractors, so the span

could quickly be replaced.

Bridge contractor, Hall Contracting of

Louisville, Ky. answered the call with Terex®

Rough Terrain cranes and Terex® Bid-Well

paving equipment to construct and pave the

new span. Owensboro, Ky.-based, Sterett

Crane and Rigging was called upon to provide

the heavy lifting with specialized equipment,

including the Terex® CC2800-1 lattice boom crawler crane. Working in tandem with another

crawler crane, The Terex CC2800-1 lifted the 640,000-lb (290,299-kg) span onto a barge and

then onto the bridge piers, helping the project be completed in less than four months.

The first step toward bridge repair was to verify that the existing piers were not

damaged, which took three weeks to complete. At the same time, engineers converted the

bridge’s 80-year-old hand-drawn blueprints into AutoCAD format. The Transportation

Cabinet then sent out a request for bids to replace the missing section of the Parker Truss

bridge design. Hall Contracting was awarded the $7 million contract on March 8, six weeks

after the accident. With less than 12 weeks to complete the project and have the bridge

reopened, Hall’s first order of business was to source more than 300 tons of steel to

construct the truss frame.

Impossible Mission

With the steel ordered, a construction site was needed to assemble the replacement

Warren Truss frame design. The Eddyville Port north of the bridge was the only available

port with enough land but was nearly 30 mi (48.3 km) from the bridge. Steel began arriving

at the site in mid-April, and the truss span was built, floated down the rive and set in place

in 32 days.

On site to aid in truss frame construction were two Terex rough terrain cranes. The Terex®

RT555-1 offered crews a 55-ton (50-tonne) rated lift capacity with maximum boom length of

110 ft (33.5 m), while the larger RT780 delivered an 80-ton (72.5-tonne) rated capacity and

126-ft (38.4-m) boom length.

Manitowoc has introduced its firsttopless crane from its Potain factory inAsia. The new crane, designated MCT385, has a 20 t maximum capacity andhas all the hallmarks of qualitycustomers expect from Potain toplesscranes. These include streamlinedtransport, easy assembly, an excellentload chart and high-strength structuralcomponents. The crane, produced inManitowoc’s manufacturing facility inZhangjiagang, China, is especiallytargeted to customers in Asia plusother emerging markets around theworld.

The MCT 385 has a maximum load moment capacity of nearly 400 tm and wasdesigned jointly by Manitowoc engineers in Europe and Asia. The end result is a cranethat offers high-quality lifting performance in a design that suits the needs of regionalcustomers.

Manitowoc launched the crane at a special event early this year at its Chinesemanufacturing facility close to Shanghai. Customers and dealers from across Asia, andbeyond, were in attendance.

The crane has a new mast that measures just 2 m wide and can achieve a maximumfree standing height of 64.9 m. This compact mast is ideal for congested urban projects, and accurate configuration is available with the addition of mast inserts of either 3.33 mor 5 m in length. Climbing with the crane is made easier as the hook height can be 50 mabove the last anchor points. In addition, the design allows for internal climbing on high-rise applications.

The compact jib design, streamlined counter jib and flexible mast system make theMCT 385 both easy to transport and assemble. For faster assembly, the crane uses anew pin connection system that makes inserting and removing pins much easier. Riggersalso benefit from a full walkway with independent safety line when assembling the jib.

The MCT 385 has frequency-controlled mechanisms for hoisting, trolleying andslewing, which provide smooth movements and precise positioning. Servicing themechanisms is straightforward too, as they are conveniently located for mechanics toreach.

The Potain MCT 385 is ideally positioned to fill the gap in Potain’s Asian tower craneline, between the 16 t MC 310 and 25 t MC 475. The Zhangjiagang factory, where theMCT 385 is built, is one of Manitowoc’s most advanced facilities. Opened in 2005, itemploys the latest technology and precision machinery to consistently produce thehighest quality cranes. The factory is one of the few crane manufacturing plants in Chinato be certified in line with the TüV quality assurance standard.
