Prepare for Emergencies• Be prepared if a fire starts• Keep a first aid kit and fire extinguisher handy.• Keep emergency numbers for doctor, ambulance, hospital, and fire department near phone.

Safety At All TimesThoroughly read and understand the instructions in thismanual and your drill’s operator manual beforecompleting work. Read all instructions, notices, andwarnings noted on the safety decals.

• Be familiar with all drill functions.• Operate machinery from the driver’s seat only.• Do not leave drill unattended with tractor engine running.• Do not dismount a moving tractor. Dismounting a moving tractor could cause serious injury or death.• Do not stand between the tractor and drill during hitching.• Keep hands, feet, and clothing away from power-driven parts.• Wear snug-fitting clothing to avoid entanglement with moving parts.• Watch out for wires, trees, etc., when folding and raising drill. • Make sure all persons are clear of working area.• Avoid wearing entertainment headphones while operating machinery. Operating tools and equipment safely requires the full attention of the operator.

Handle Chemicals ProperlyAgricultural chemicals can be dangerous. Improper usecan seriously injure persons, animals, plants, soil, andproperty.

• Read and follow chemical manufacturer’s instructions.• Wear protective clothing.• Use personal protective equipment. • Handle all chemicals with care. • Avoid inhaling smoke from any type of chemical fire.• Store or dispose of unused chemicals as specified by chemical manufacturer.

Avoid High Pressure FluidsEscaping fluid under pressure can penetrate the skin,causing serious injury.

• Avoid the hazard by relieving pressure before disconnecting hydraulic lines.• Use a piece of paper or cardboard, NOT BODY PARTS, to check for suspected leaks.• Wear protective gloves and safety glasses or goggles when working with hydraulic systems.• If an accident occurs, seek immediate medical assistance from a physician familiar with this type of injury.

Wear Protective EquipmentGreat Plains advises all users of chemicals detailed inthis manual to use the following personal safetyequipment:

• Face shield, goggles, or full face respirator. • Waterproof, unlined gloves. Neoprene gloves are recommended. Make sure these gloves are free of chemicals. Use welding gloves when welding.• Protective boots.• Wear clean clothing appropriate for the job. Avoid loose-fitting clothing.• Prolonged exposure to loud noise can cause hearing impairment or loss. Wear suitable hearing protection such as earmuffs or earplugs.• Always follow the personal protection equipment recommendations from any other manufacturer of tools, equipment, chemicals, etc. used to complete the work detailed in this manual.

Practice Safe Maintenance• Understand procedure before doing work. • Use proper tools and equipment.• Work in a clean, dry area.• Lower the drill, put tractor in park, turn off engine, and remove key before performing maintenance.• Make sure all moving parts have stopped and all system pressure is relieved.• Allow drill to cool completely.• Disconnect battery ground cable (-) before servicing or adjusting electrical systems or before welding on drill.• Inspect all parts. Make sure parts are in good condition and installed properly. Replace any damaged or worn parts. • Remove buildup of grease, oil, or debris.• Remove all tools and unused parts from drill before operation.

Getting StartedBefore beginning installation of your Rockshaft Mount Reinforcement Kit, you’ll need to ensure that you have read,and understand, the installation instructions.

Tools RequiredThe following tools are required for installation:

• basic hand tools,• support blocks,• right angle grinder,• eye protection,• welder capable of welding material as described in this manual,• welding visor, • welding gloves,• hearing protection, • any other reasonable or recommended personal protective equipment,• and Great Plains green spray paint (81-001C). Contact your local Great Plains dealer to order.

Work LocationMove the drill to a location with:

• flat, smooth non-flammable surface free of combustibles, dirt, and debris,• adequate spatial area with suitable illumination and ventilation,• and a clear surface beneath drill for easy recovery of any fallen or dropped parts and tools.

Existing Parts AffectedThe following existing parts are involved in the kit installation. The Part Disposition column indicates whether the partis left in place, moved, or not re-used. The part Callout numbers in this list matches the illustrations in this installationmanual. The Part Descriptions match those in the drill’s Part Manual (195-325P).

Installation

Setup1. Ensure the safety chain is securely attached to the

tractor.1. Lower and unfold drill. Be aware of the clearance

area necessary before unfolding drill.2. Lower the openers.3. Lower rockshaft.4. Engage tractor parking brake, turn off tractor, and

remove key from the tractor.5. Disconnect battery ground cable (-).6. Place support blocks to stabilize tractor.7. Place blocks and supports under the drill frame to

stabilize.8. Place support blocks to near the rockshaft mount.

Caution:This drill has a negative tongue weight when unfolded and with openers raised. Be certain the safety chain is securely attached to the tractor before unfolding the drill.

Crushing Hazard: Never crawl or place any body part under the drill without first stabilizing the drill with support blocks. Failure to stabilize the drill before beginning installation could result in serious injury or death.

9. Ensure the drill is fully stabilized and secured before beginning installation.

Remove10. Remove clevis pin (1) from cotter pin (2) to release

rod end (3) attached to rockshaft.11. Repeat necessary steps to release second rod end. 12. Swing the cylinders so they will not catch or contact

anything else during the installation. 13. Remove all debris, dirt, grease, etc. from the existing

parts, rockshaft mount, and along the frame to create a clean work surface.

14. Remove existing bolts (4), flat washers (5), brackets (6), locking washers (7), and nuts (8) in the rockshaft bearing assembly. Set aside removed parts, as most parts will be reused.

15. Repeat necessary steps to remove second rockshaft bearing assembly. Again, set aside removed parts, as most will be reused.

Grind16. Remove the paint in the areas on the tongue, near

the rockshaft mount, where welding will occur.17. Thoroughly clean the area after grinding has been

completed.

High Pressure Fluid Hazard:Escaping fluid under pressure can penetrate the skin causing serious injury. Avoid the hazard by relieving pressure before disconnecting hydraulic lines. Avoid damaging hydraulic lines in nearby work areas as you complete work and maintenance to your drill. Use a piece of paper or cardboard, NOT BODY PARTS, to check for suspected leaks. Wear protective gloves and safety glasses or goggles when working with hydraulic systems. If an accident occurs, see a doctor immediately. Any fluid injected in to the skin must be surgically removed within a few hours or gangrene may result.

Weld New Gussets18. Slide each of the four gussets (9) into the slot on the

existing rockshaft mount, two gussets on each side.

19. Hand tighten bolts (4) into rockshaft mount from below into each gusset (9) to provide stability while completing weld.

20. Test fit before welding.

21. Weld each of the four gussets (9), two on each side of the rockshaft mount. Each of the four gussets will require a weld on each side of the face of the gusset.

22. Allow welds to fully cool before proceeding with work.

23. Remove the four bolts (4) previously hand tighten to stabilize gussets (9) during welding. Set aside for later use.

24. To protect against corrosion, paint areas that were stripped and where new welds are. Use Great Plains green spray paint (821-001C).

Caution:Disconnect battery ground cable (-) before welding on drill to avoid damage to the tractor and drill, and serious injury or death.

ReassembleNote: Reassemble rockshaft bearing assembly by using

the existing four bolts (4), four locking washers (7), four flat washers (5), and two brackets (6), previously disassembled and set aside. The four nuts (8) will not be reused.

25. The four bolts (4) will be directed upwards through both top and bottom brackets (6) into the self-threaded, newly reinforced rockshaft mount using four locking washers (7) and four flat washers (5).

Note: See “Torque Values Chart” on page 9.

Note: The rockshaft bearing will be mounted in the same previous location on the rockshaft.

26. Repeat necessary steps to reassemble second rockshaft bearing assembly.

27. Reinsert clevis pin (1) into cotter pin (2) to reconnect cylinder rod end (3) to rockshaft.

28. Repeat necessary steps to reconnect second cylinder rod end (3).

Closeout29. Lubricate any parts which were previously cleaned to

prepare for installation.30. Clean work area and remove all tools, equipment,

and unneeded parts.
