CONSTANTIN ABALUTA was born in Bucharest, October 8, 1938,he is both a licensed architect and a freelance writer. He haspublished more than 20 books of poetry, several story booksand translations from modern poets and prose-writers (DylanThomas, Wallace Stevens, Samuel Beckett, and Boris Vian,among others) He has won literary prizes in Romania andabroad, and his name is to be found in numerous Who’s Whodictionaries.
MICHELINA DE GRUTTOLA has been writing haiku for the pasteight years. Her work has appeared in Raw NerVZ Haiku andthe Boston Haiku Society News. Having lived in the US formany years, her first impulse is still to write in her nativelanguage, Italian, though she is proficient in both Italian andEnglish.
MIKHAIL FINERMAN was born in the USSR in 1946. He took akeen interest in Zen and wrote his first hokku in Russian in the70s. His poems were included in the prestigious anthologySamizdat Veka (Self Publishing of the Century) (Polifact 1997).
DAG HAMMARSKJÖLD was a Swedish diplomat and Member of theSwedish Academy. From 1953 to 1961 he was Secretary-General of the United Nations.110 haiku poems can be foundin his book Markings.
GARY HOTHAM has been writing haiku for over 30 years and stilldoesn’t know how to stop. A major collection of his poetry waspublished in 1999: BREATH MARKS: Haiku to Read in the Darkby Canon Press.
BRANKA JEGDIC is an up-and-coming poet from Montenegro,Yugoslavia. Her work has appeared in Haiku Novine, a respectedhaiku magazine published in Yugoslavia, as well as in Knots:The Anthology of Southeast European Haiku Poetry.
¸ˇ ˇ GÜNTHER KLINGE, the long-time president of a pharmaceuticalcompany with subsidiaries in Austria and Ireland, was born inBerlin in 1910. In addition to haiku, he paints and plays theviolin, piano and organ. An active outdoorsman, Klinge livesin Munich and is president of the German-Japanese Associationof Bavaria.
CHEN MINGHUA, a Chinese born in Vietnam, came to the UnitedStates in 1979. He is an electronic engineer in Los Angeles andchief editor of New World Poetry Bimonthly since 1990. He hasauthored three collections of poetry, all written in Chinese.
BERTA G. MONTALVO was born in La Habana, Cuba in 1919. Shehas lived in exile in Miami, Florida since 1963. Ms. Montalvowrites haiku, short and children’s stories, poems and politicalarticles. Published widely in literary magazines and periodicalsaround the world, she has three volumes of haiku and onevolume of poetry in print. Her most recent children’s book isabout to be published.
Of TATSUO the editors have no information beyond his poem.
JOS VAN HEST has studied Dutch and dramatics. He writes andtranslates children’s books. His latest picture book is calledTinus heeft tien tantes (Tinus Has Ten Aunts). His books have beentranslated into Chinese, Turkish, Arabic and Papiamento.
JOYCE VILLENEUVE was a widely published poet in both Frenchand English. She was born and lived her whole life in Canada,where she acquired degrees in Economics, Library Scienceand French Literature. She published many books and was therecipient of numerous awards throughout her life, whichended prematurely in 1998.

BERTRAND AGOSTINI is an Associate Professor of English at École Superieured’Agriculture and Université Catholique de l’Ouest in Angers, France.This year he is a Visiting Associate Professor of Languages at ClemsonUniversity, South Carolina. In 1998, with Christiane Pajotin, he wrotea book on Jack Kerouac’s haiku: Itinéraire dans l’errance: Kerouac et le haïku(A Wandering Itinerary: Kerouac and the Haiku).
DIMITAR ANAKIEV is a prize-winning poet, the author of numerous haikucollections, co-editor of Knots: The Anthology of Southeast European HaikuPoetry, and the haiku journal Green Apples, co-founder of HASEE, theHaiku Association of South East Europe, and owner of Prijatelj HaikuPress in his adopted homeland of Slovenia.
D-RO ISTVAN BIERFARISTO (DR. STEVEN BREWER), is a specialist in constructedlanguages with particular expertise in Esperanto. He writes haiku inEsperanto and has performed haiku readings at Esperanto conferences,including “La Zne Haikoj de Istvan Bierfaristo” and “La Ampoezio deIstvan Bierfaristo”. Steve has translated his haiku into English for localand national haiku readings.
ION CODRESCU was born 16 December, 1951, Cobadin, Romania. He isa poet and painter, founder and editor of Albatross, internationalEnglish-Romanian haiku journal, and president of the ConstantzaHaiku Society. He has published widely, including, most recently, AForeign Guest (1999), and Mountain Voices (2000), and won many literaryprizes in Romania and abroad.
RAFFAEL DE GRUTTOLA has been a past president of The Haiku Society ofAmerica and is its present treasurer. He is a founding member of theBoston Haiku Society. He has worked on a number of projects translatinghaiku from Italian into English as well as English into Italian.
KAI FALKMAN is the Ambassador at the Swedish Ministry for ForeignAffairs. He is the President of the Swedish Haiku Society, which hehelped form in 1999. He is a writer, and a translator of Japanese haiku.His Between the Lines, a consideration of the art of translation of haiku,is due out from Red Moon Press late this year.
STANFORD M. FORRESTER received his M.A. degree and completed hisPh.D. coursework in Spanish Literature at Boston College. Currently,he is the editor of bottle rockets, a haiku monograph. Stanford works atYale University Press in the marketing department. He wishes to thankBeatriz de Santiago Fourquet for her generosity of spirit and time. Heand his wife, Mary, are expecting their first child as we go to press.
WIM LOFVERS is president of the Dutch Haiku Circle and editor of theinternational haiku journal Woodpecker. He is the creator of the Dutchhaiku diary and has his own small-scale publishing company, ’t HogeWoord, which specialises in miniature haiku booklets. Wim is theauthor of several haiku booklets, including Westenwind, poging tot eenkleine Westerse haiku-filosofie (West wind, attempting a small Western haikuphilosophy). ARNOLD VERMEEREN is editor of the Dutch/Flemish haikuquarterly Vuursteen (Flint) and organiser of the biannual Dutch languagepostal kukai. He has been a member of the Japanese haiku group Fuyoh(Rose Mallow) for almost four years. Arnold is currently working on a firstminiature haiku booklet, together with six other haiku and tankawriters, to be published by 't Hoge Woord.

BAN’YA NATSUISHI is the penname of Masayuki Inui. He holds an M.A.in Comparative Literature and Culture from the University of Tokyo,and is currently Professor at Meiji University. He has published over adozen books of original haiku and essays on its practice, including AFuture Waterfall (Red Moon Press 1999), his first full-length book ofhaiku translated into English.
ZINOVY VAYMAN composed his first poems at the age of 12 in Siberia.Thirty years later he discovered haiku in English while attending classesat the Kaji Aso Studio in Boston.
JIANQING ZHENG is a professor of English/Creative Writing at MississippiValley State University, Itta Bena, MS, USA. He has published haikuand other poems in Chinese and English, and has translated a fewhundred poems.

is a charitable project of Red Moon Press. Each yearhaiku is gathered on a chosen theme from aroundthe world in twelve languages widely in use in inter-national haiku. Each poem is translated into theother eleven tongues, as well as Esperanto. Thethemes are selected for their universality, as proofthat the things we value are more powerful than thecultural differences which sometimes separate us.
Each year a non-profit service organization is chosenwhich Red Moon Press feels is in close alignmentwith the theme of that year, and all profits from theproject are donated to it. In this, our inaugural yearof the project, and with the theme of “Children inHaiku from Around the World,” our charitablesponsor and beneficiary is UNICEF. We hope youwill join us in supporting their valuable andnecessary work.
