How old do you think Earth is?

4.6 billion years!4,600,000,000

Divided into 4 “eras”:

– Paleozoic – Precambrian

– Mesozoic – Cenozoic

Era-a major division of geological time usually divided into two or more periods

Period- marked by distinctive characteristics or events

Fossils

• Fossils (from the Classical Latin word fossilis; means, "obtained by digging")

• They are the preserved remains or traces of animals, plants, and other organisms from the remote past.

• Their position in the rock formations and sedimentary layers (strata) is known as the fossil record.

• The observation that certain fossils were associated with certain rock strata led early geologists to recognize a geological timescale in the 19th century.

Relative or Absolute

Relative DatingUnless something has happened, the newer

strata will be on top of older ones. Based on the Rule of Superposition,

certain organisms clearly lived before others,

during certain geologic times.

Absolute DatingRadioactive activity allows

geologists to determine the numerical or "absolute" age of the various strata and thereby the included fossils as young as 10,000

years old up to 3.48 billion years old.

Absolute age dating is like saying you are 15 years old and your grandfather is 77 years old.

Relative age dating is like saying that your grandfather

is older than you.

• The cyanobacteria have an extensive fossil record.

• The oldest known fossil, is a cyanobacteria

from the Archaean rocks of western Australia, dated 3.5 billion years old.

• This may be somewhat surprising, since the oldest rocks are only a little older: 3.8 billion years old!

• Like the extinct organisms that they come from, fossils vary in size from microscopic, single bacterial cells one micrometer in diameter, to gigantic, such as dinosaurs and trees many meters long and weighing many tons.

• A fossil normally preserves only a portion of the deceased organism, usually that portion that was partially mineralized during life, such as the bones and teeth.

• Fossils may also consist of the marks left behind by the organism while it was alive, such as animal tracks or feces (coprolites). – These types of fossil are called trace fossils
