TOOL // Core French - Assessing Listening and Speaking Skills

What is it used for? This tool allows the teacher to efficiently gather data on students’ listening and speaking skills to guide programming and to provide feedback to students.

How do you use? There are two versions, one is a paper version and one is a technological version in Google Docs. Student names appear along the left column with the four key areas of Listening and Speaking indicated in the subsequent columns: Comprehension ( to what level to they understand when involved in French conversations), Prompting (how much prompting is required for the student to participate in a French conversation), Sentence Structure ( does the student use complete sentences to express themselves in French) and Correct Grammar. The teacher can simply check the level under each column for the specific student they are observing. For each student there are two sections so a record of growth is also available. The prompts change throughout the year depending on the unit and the vocabulary and structures that are expected for a grade. Five to six students are focused on each day and the activity is completed while students are working at centres. It is very quick. This allows the teacher to ensure they are interacting with all students and to identify groupings of students who require further instruction in a particular skill area. It also, forms the basis of feedback given to the student. The Google Drive application allows the teacher to quickly record simply by clicking and to use voice dictation to add clarifying comments. The app puts the data into a chart and specific feedback can be forwarded to individual students.
