Suggested  News  Article:    Avoid  Spring  Break  Traffic  with  FL511

This  Spring  Break,  millions  of  families  and  students  plan  to  travel  Florida’s  state  roads.  Whether  you   are   heading   to   Disney,   South   Beach   or   any   other   popular   spring   break   destination,   the  Florida  Department   of  Transportation   reminds  motorists   to  use   its  FL511  Traveler   Information  System  to  get  up  to  date  traffic  information  before  hitting  the  road.

Wherever   you  planning   to   travel,   staying   safe   is   critically   important.  Here   are   some   road   trip  safety  tips  to  make  your  spring  break  travel  a  breeze:

• Plan   out   your   route   before   you   hit   the   road.   Make   sure   you   know   where   the  construction  zones  and  road  closures  are  along  your  route.

• Slow  down  and  be  aware  of  road  and  traffic  conditions  when  entering  work  zones.  • Stay  wide  awake  and  alert  when  driving.  Sleepy  drivers  can  be  as  dangerous  as  drunk

drivers.  Get  enough  sleep  so  that  you  feel  refreshed.  • Switch  drivers  when  you  feel  fatigued.  • Take  activity  breaks  before  you  start  nodding  off.  • Prepare   for   stormy  weather.   Learn  more  about  driving   in   spring  storms   like   tornadoes

and  flash  floods.  • Stay  on  well-‐traveled  roads  where  it  is  easier  to  get  assistance  if  needed.  • Make  sure  your  spare  tire  is  pumped  up  before  you  leave  and  that  you  have  your  car’s

fluids  checked.  • Drive  safely  and  make  sure  your  driver  and  all  passengers  wear  their  safety  belts.  Don’t

text  or  respond  to  phone  calls  while  driving  unless  in  a  hands-‐free  system.

There   are   several   convenient   ways   to   receive   traffic   updates.   Drivers   can   receive   up-‐to-‐date  traffic   information  and  door-‐to-‐door  directions  from  the  Florida  511  mobile  app,  which  can  be  downloaded   free  on  Google   Play  or   the  Apple   App   Store.  Motorists  can  also   call  511   toll   free,  visit  FL511.com  or  follow  one  of  the  statewide,  regional  or  roadway-‐specific  feeds  on  Twitter.    The  new  Florida  511  app  provides  door-‐to-‐door  directions  with  travel  times  and  alternate  routes  on  most  roadways  throughout  the  state.  The  app’s   latest  feature,  Drive  Mode,  allows  users   to  get  a  quick  view  of  local  incidents  and  travel  speeds.  Drive  Mode  also  provides  users  with  up  to  three   routes   and   travel   times   to   their   destinations,   in   addition   to   audible   alerts   of   incidents  occurring  along  their  route.

The  Florida  511  Traveler   Information  System  from  the  Florida  Department  of  Transportation   is  the  state’s  official   source   for   real-‐time   traffic  and   travel   information.  The  FL511  app,  website,  twitter  feeds  and  toll   free  number  provides   information  on  Florida’s   interstates,  toll  roads  and  other  major  metropolitan   roadways,   allowing   drivers   to   avoid   unnecessary   delays,   as   well   as  receive   updates  on  crashes,   congestion,   construction  and  more.  For  more   information,  please  visit  www.FL511.com.
