In preparation for News Engagement Day on October 6, we’ve put together a list of some of the most creative ways students, journalists, and news lovers showed their enthusiasm during last year’s first-ever event:

1. News Flash Mob! Students at The University of Maryland made the news by organizing a news flash mob to promote engagement in front of unsuspecting passersby.

2. Texas Tribune and SMU Students Gave The News Some TunesOnline media publication The Texas Tribune let students in Tribune Fellow Jake Bastell’s digital journalism class provide a soundtrack to current events on the Tribune’s Spotify account. Tracks selected by the students were inspired by stories ranging from marriage equality to campaign contributions during the Texas governor’s race.

3. News Hounds Sniff Around Syracuse

The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications inspired students to sniff out a good story on News Engagement Day by bringing some four-legged news hounds to campus.

4. Hear ye, Hear ye Communications students at Elon University in North Carolina acted as campus criers, sporting colonial hats and shouting out the day’s news headlines.

5. Extra! Extra! Tweet All About it! #ilovenews trended on twitter in Austin as residents of the capitol city showed their favorite news outlets some love in 140 characters or less.

6. News Engagement Day Debuted on Buzzfeed

University of Texas journalism student Karla Pulido shared five great reasons everyone should know about News Engagement Day, which were accompanied by five perfect GIFs.

7. Amy Zerba of The New York Times Shared “Why I’m A Journalist”Amy Zerba, a senior editor at the New York Times, shared her reasons for becoming a journalist in a powerful You Tube message.

8. UNL Students Broadcasted From The Nebraska UnionStudents at University of Nebraska-Lincoln took their news broadcast out of the studio and into the heart of campus to engage students.

9. Professional Journalists Visited Classrooms Across the Country Reporters from a variety of local and national media outlets encouraged aspiring journalists by speaking to college and high school students about their work.

10.Vine Users Shared How They Engage With The News Through Video
