Welcome to the 4th Edition of Silicon India’s Top 100 Engineering Colleges, 2013. It is evident that IITs, NITs and few other premier engineering colleges alone cannot churn out enough engineers to meet this need and it is here the other engineering colleges, private and public, play their role. But with new technology institutes mushrooming in every nook and corner of the country, a dilemma about the quality of education arises for both IT organizations who are looking for good engineers and students who want to pursue a career in this industry. We at SiliconIndia with our 15 years of media expertise and expose to IT and related technology space, understand that despite the infrastructure, faculty, fee structure and other criteria, the sole parameter of judging a college's quality is the performance of its graduates in the industry, which in turn can be measured by the pay package commanded by them. Thus, this list is entirely based on a single parameter -CTC of a graduate after five years of work experience.

Methodology:To rank the best engineering colleges, a perceptual study was conducted among HR managers, Recruitment firms and job boards. The companies/institutes were chosen carefully to ensure that the HR managers/professionals interviewed were involved with recruitment and had a fair idea about the market. Over 3000 engineers and Computer professionals who graduated in the year 2008 and did not pursue any other course/program a rewards were interviewed across the six metros-Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai After an exhaustive research and analysis, we finally came up with a list of top 100 engineering institutes (govt/private) in three streams - Computer Science, Electronics and Communication and Mechanical Engineering. Apart from this we also formed a list top 10 institutes across India in each zone and Top Emerging Colleges in India and Top Private University in India for Engineering. This report also covers Best 10 M. Tech. Colleges.

Nano Science key to green fuelWhen the world’s focus is on green fuel and reduction of pollution, nano science can play a major role in achieving this goal, a noted researcher said today.

“India has 50 per cent shortfall in fuel and catalysis can play a role here as there are several material

including forest products which can generate fuel like bio-diesel”, Prof. Ajay K. Dalai of Canada’s Saskatchewan University said while addressing a two-day “National Conference on Nano-Materials as Catalysts” at the SOA University which began here on Friday.

The Canadian government, he said, was investing one billion dollars in creating and boosting material research activities in his University as different schools were involved in multi-disciplinary research as it was linked to societal benefit.

The Conference has been organized by the Department of Chemistry of the Institute of Technical Education and Research (ITER), the faculty of engineering of the University.

Vice-Chancellor of SOA University, Prof. R.P.Mohanty, who inaugurated the conference underscored the need for a multidisciplinary approach involving physics, biology and chemistry to understand nano materials at a basic level and how they interacted with the environment.

Prof. T.S.Pal, Professor of IIT, Kharagpur, who also spoke, said science had taken a new turn due to nano-technology and the availability of equipment to study this science could open the way for benefit for the society.

IITian resign to design lab in suitcase.Amit Bhatnagar, an alumnus of IIT-Roorkee who quit a plush job in Hollywood's famed Universal Studios, has designed a portable biochemistry laboraotry, which comes packed in a suitcase and can perform 23 crucial medical tests including for kidney, liver, heart, anaemia, diabetes and arthritis. The portable lab, which could prove a boon to people staying in remote areas that have little access to diagnostics which results in several diseases remaining undetected.It has been designed to perform 23 vital blood tests for kidney, liver, heart, anaemia, diabetes and arthritis accurately, cost-

effectively and timely.

Google signs MoU with AP Govt. to train Engineering students.Google has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Andhra Pradesh government to train engineering students of Jawahar Knowledge Centres (JKC) in latest technologies like mobile and cloud computing. Google will also train the trainers/mentors of AP Society for Knowledge Networks (APSFKNW) and provide required software, services and training material free of cost, said a statement from the office of Minister for Information Technology.

Engineering through Distance ModeHuman resource development minister M.M. Pallam Raju has informed reporters that the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) would allow more technical courses including engineering through correspondence i.e. distance learning mode, as long as the laboratory work for these courses is conducted through face-to-face sessions.So this provision for allowing studying engineering through correspondence comes with a clause: "Only those students who have at least one regular classroom diploma or degree and with some work experience are eligible to apply for these distance technical education degrees.
