Tired of Low Yields and Market Volatility? Get "Indexed".By Roger Thompson, Financial Advisor, Dakota Financial Services

With interest rates at such low levels these days, many IRA investors are turning to financial products like fixed index annuities and equity index certificates of deposit for potentially better returns. Fixed index annuities are contracts with and guaranteed by insurance companies. Equity index CDs are issued by banks, sold through brokerage firms, and their principal is guaranteed by FDIC at maturity. One similarity between these products is they both typically may earn a rate of return that is tied to the performance of an equity index like the S&P 500. Both products usually advertise a minimum guaranteed value when held to maturity. Index-linked products may be suitable for investors with a longer-term time horizon of at least 5 to 10+ years. These products can be complicated due to features such as participation rates, cap rates and numerous interest crediting methods. Index annuities may offer partial withdrawal features that allow for annual withdrawals of up to 10% of the contract value while the principal and sometimes even the gains of an equity index CD might not be accessible until maturity. For more information about fixed index annuities or equity index CDs and how they may fit into your retirement income plan, please see or call Roger Thompson, Financial Advisor with Dakota Financial Services Inc., located in the main branch of the Sioux Empire Federal Credit Union, 5010 S Solberg Ave, Sioux Falls, SD.
