By most widely accepted theory, Dubrovnik (lat. Ragusa) was founded in in 7th century when the ancient people of Latins fled before the invasion of Avars and Slavs in the rock Laus (Laus → Lausium → Rausium → Ragusium → Ragusa). Later those Slavs built a village on the southern slopes of mount Srđ and called it Dubrava, which grew through time to form the city.Along with its beauty and numerous cultural monuments, Dubrovnik is also famous for its history. Dubrovnik Republic was small but very prosperous and influential city-state, and it existed independently for nearly four and a half centuries in delicate historical times, surrounded by great and powerful mon-archies like Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian empire.

2) Split

Split is the second largest city in Croatia and economic and administrative center of Dalmatia. Widely spread theory is that the city is 1700 years old and was built around the ancient Roman Palace of the emperor Diocletian (built in 305 AD), although latest archeological findings bind the city for the 6th century BC, as the Greek colony of Aspalathos. Spread over a central peninsula and its surroundings, Split broader area includes nearby towns, and the city lies just in place to take a short trip the beautiful Adriatic islands or surrounding mountains.

Diocletian’s palace was constructed on the Adriatic coastline, four miles from Salona which was the capital of Roman province Dalmatia. The palace was built as a massive structure, much like a Roman military fortress. Finest qual-ity white limestone, used to build many remarkable objects within the Palace, was transported from the nearby island of Brač. In November of 1979, UNE-SCO adopted the proposal and included historic city of Split built around the Palace in the register of World Cultural Heritage.

Inhabitated from prehistoric times, Croatia’s sunniest place, island of Hvar belongs to the group of middle-Dalmatia islands, located in Split-Dalmatia County in the middle of surrounding islands, with Brač on its north, and Šćedro, Paklenski islands, Vis, Korčula and Pelješac to its south. With surface area of 299,7 square kilometers, it is one of the biggest Croatian islands and, according to Hanibal Lucić, Croatia’s greatest Renaissance versifier and Hvar noble, the most beautiful island of the Mediterranean. It consists of two towns (Hvar and Stari Grad) and two townships, Jelsa and Sućuraj.

Stari Grad

Stari Grad was (antique Faros; eng Old town) was founded in year 384 BC. It is as-sumed that it was founded by Greek settlers from the island of Pharos. The town had an interesting history – from his famous habi-tant, Ilyrrian governor and general Deme-trius, through later Roman governance to medieval influences of Slavs, leaving behind rich cultural heritage for today’s tourists and habitants. Stari Grad was the seat of medieval diocese up until 1278, when it was transferred to the New Town, which was later named after the island, Hvar.

(City of) Hvar

From the earliest beginning of sailing, Hvar’s growth was geared up by excel-lent nautical position, at the heart of Adriatic sea paths. City of Hvar gained its strength and glory during medieval age, as an important harbor within the Venetian empire. Today, city of Hvar is the tourist center of the island and one of the most visited destinations in Croatia, known as the party capital. Due to such rich history and various cultural influences, city of Hvar holds an enormous amount of cultural treasure. City’s main St. Stephen’s square is the largest square in Dalmatia, and it spreads on 4500 square meters. Originally the whole place was a deep bay with water up to today’s Cathedral. When vis-iting Hvar, one should not miss to visit the Cathedral, City fortress, Medieval city walls, Rector’s Palace and Croatian Historic Theater, built in year 1612. One monument next to another make you want to dive in into the city’s glo-rious history.

4) Korčula

Widely known as a birthplace of world’s most famous traveler, Marco Polo, the island of Korčula is located next to the Dalmatia’s shore, in Dubrovnik-Neretva County. Three biggest places on the island are the city of Korčula, Blato (in-land), and little town Vela Luka on the west.

So as Hvar, Korčula was also inhabited in prehistoric times. The old city is surrounded by walls, and the streets are arranged in a herringbone pattern, allowing free circulation of air while in the same time protecting against the wind. The town’s historic sites include the central Gothic and Renaissance Cathedral of St Mark, the Town Hall and the massive city fortifications. Also, there is the 15th-century Franciscan monastery with a beautiful cloister situ-ated on the islet of Badija and Marco Polo’s birth house. Among many Korčula’s valuable an intriguing traditions, Moreška takes a special place. It is a knightly combat sword dance originated around the 12th century in the Mediterranean. It was named after the ancient people of Moors, and it is annually presented in Korčula from the 16th century. Moreška is performed by two groups of dancers wearing red and black uniforms, who fight for the affection of Bule, fiancee of White king Osman, who was abducted by the black king Moro. Twelve pairs of “Moreškans” perform dance pieces and fight with swords, accelerating the rhythm of their movements and mutually competing in the art of fencing in seven dance figures, which ends with the victory white king and triumphant lap of his white army.

Along with cultural and historical monuments and interesting traditions and customs, Korčula is also known for its wines. Due to specific micro-climate factors and a lot of sunshine, Korčula’s wines have a specific quality and aro-ma. Grk (white wine) and Plavac Mali (black wine) are the two major variet-ies, mostly planted on sandy soil of Lumbarda, surrounded by the sea on the north and south sides.

Many places in Croatia have some objects within a city or town protected by UNESCO. But there is only one whole city – the marvelous Trogir. Trogir is located in the center of Dalmatia, on Adriatic coast, just 25 kilometers from Split. In the past, Trogir was one of Dalmatia’s cultural centers, which Old town was formed between 13th and 15th century.

Among numerous art and architectural masterpieces, special place belongs to the St Lawrence cathedral, which is the home of the many masterpieces within itself. Construction of the cathedral began in 1213 on the foundations of early Christian cathedral, which was destroyed by Saracens. Interestingly, although it was named after St. Lawrence, it is also known as the St. John’s cathedral, after the brave and impeccable bishop, who showed remarkable resistance towards Hungarian king Koloman.

The cathedral was mostly (up until 1251) built in Romanesque style, while its Gothic arc was built in 15th century. The most astonishing masterpiece that the cathedral holds is the Radovan’s portal, which is the cathedral’s main por-tal. It is the most significant medieval portal on the eastern Adriatic and in this part of the Europe. It was named after its author, master Radovan and it is the most monumental work of the Romanesque – Gothic style in Croatia. It contains images of the First Sin (Adam and Eve), Redemption, Christological cycle, individual saints and apostles, the months and hunting scenes. Cathe-dral is also the place of many other masterpieces of inestimable value. Other must-see Trogir monuments are Castle Kamerlengo and the Tower of Saint Marc, Berislavic palace, Cipicic palace, Lucic palace and Trogir City museum, just to mention the few.
