The most beautiful city in the world. Pearl of the Mediterranean. Living monu-ment. Dalmatian jewel…the list goes on. Of course, all of these are descriptions of Dubrovnik. By most widely accepted theory, Dubrovnik (lat. Ragusa) was founded in in 7th century when the ancient people of Latins fled before the invasion of Avars and Slavs in the rock Laus (Laus → Lausium → Rausium → Ragusium → Ragusa). Later those Slavs built a village on the southern slopes of mount Srđ and called it Dubrava, which grew through time to form the city.Along with its beauty and numerous cultural monuments, Dubrovnik is also famous for its history. Dubrovnik Republic was small but very prosperous and influential city-state, and it existed independently for nearly four and a half centuries in delicate historical times, surrounded by great and powerful mon-archies like Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian empire.

Being one of the most important maritime and mercantile centers on the Adriatic and a trade spot between the East and West had a positive impact of city’s growth and development in numerous areas. Material prosperity, security and freedom helped the growth of humanist culture, which inspired magnificent urban, architectural and scientific achievements. Although the city and its people were targets of unprecedented savagery during the Serbi-an aggression in recent war, most of the historical monuments were restored and saved for future generations. Most important (and beautiful) monuments include Dubrovnik ramparts, Placa (Stradun), The Rectors Palace, Sponza Palace, Orlandos Column, Chatedral (of the Assumpion of the Virgin Mary), St Blaise’s church, Franciscan monastery, St Ignatius church, Dominican monas-tery and many others.

2) Split

Split is the second largest city in Croatia and economic and administrative center of Dalmatia. Widely spread theory is that the city is 1700 years old and was built around the ancient Roman Palace of the emperor Diocletian (built in 305 AD), although latest archeological findings bind the city for the 6th century BC, as the Greek colony of Aspalathos. Spread over a central peninsula and its surroundings, Split broader area includes nearby towns, and the city lies just in place to take a short trip the beautiful Adriatic islands or surrounding mountains.

Diocletian’s palace was constructed on the Adriatic coastline, four miles from Salona which was the capital of Roman province Dalmatia. The palace was built as a massive structure, much like a Roman military fortress. Finest qual-ity white limestone, used to build many remarkable objects within the Palace, was transported from the nearby island of Brač. In November of 1979, UNE-SCO adopted the proposal and included historic city of Split built around the Palace in the register of World Cultural Heritage.

In Croatia’s past, Split was often seen by tourists as a transit place before the escape for the islands or oth-er Dalmatia’s beautiful little towns. Nowadays, situation has completely changed. Split has become the true center of Dalmatia’s tourism activi-ties, with its uncountable historic and cultural monuments, museums and all sorts of events and tourist offer-

ings throughout the year.

People in Split are very proud of their city and its beauty. If you ask them, they will tell you without hesitation that there is no place in the world as beautiful as their city. The more time you spend in Split, the harder it is to oppose that saying. Split really does easily get under your skin. Palace central square, Peristil, where the Di-ocletian held its speeches, is surely one of the most magnificent and unique historical courtyards in the world. Today, the Palace still is the lifeline of the city of Split, still inhabited, full of shops, markets and charming narrow streets. Outside the Palace, Split also has a lot to offer. Whether it’s a re-laxing cocktail in your favorite beach bar in one of Split beautiful bays, a game of Picigin in Bačvice beach, or jogging and cycling in a beautiful

Marjan park-forest.

When talking about real estate in Split, the situation is similar to that in Dubrovnik, as both cities consist of Old Town and surrounding areas, with significant variations in price. If you are looking for a property inside the Diocletian’s Palace, you should be prepared to pay some more. Luckily, we have many Split real estates in our portfolio!
