Many encountered the effects of the propane crisis in 2014. Experi-encing record-low temperatures, higher-than-normal crop drying demands, pipeline infrastructure and the export of propane all played a factor in this situation that was felt throughout the country. This pro-pane shortage naturally generated the normal supply-and-demand ef-fects causing large spikes in propane prices. Ultimately, pipeline outages and low inventories left us vulner-able. Propane was delivered to meet our customers’ needs through an organized delivery schedule, leaving some customers requesting for more

propane or hostile with concerns that suppliers were exploiting the shortage to raise prices. Consumers were left with an ongoing uncer-tainty, leaving the industry the chal-lenge of restoring that confidence. Despite the crisis, our team was able to overcome these trials and ensure product to our customers while continuing to market propane and reestablish buyer confidence.

COuNTERINg ThAT ThREAT

We continue to move forward to pro-vide the best for our customers. As a direct result of the 2014 propane crisis, we took the necessary steps to secure additional propane gallons and increased our storage capacity. We continue to take steps in edu-

cating the public on the benefits of propane, not only for its most com-mon use, heating, but for powering a vehicle, operating a generator or mowing a lawn. Worley & Obetz has been offering propane autogas for over 10 years while utilizing over seven propane-powered vehicles in our own company fleet. Last year, we installed a 22-kilowatt propane-pow-ered generator at our home office to ensure customer service during a power outage. We now mow our properties with a propane-powered lawn mower that not only helps reduce our carbon footprint, but also reduces our overall operating costs. Most importantly, our team con-tinues to focus on energy indepen-dence to ensure a better future for generations to come.

Matheson has a very close re-lationship with our propane suppliers. We don’t look at them as just our vendors but rather our partners. The same strong rela-tionships apply to our propane transportation partners. Timely, open, honest communication and feedback is the key to a successful supply plan.

ThREAT

2014 saw two extremely different and distinct wholesale pricing pat-terns. The beginning of the year had high wholesale pricing and volatility, and 2014 closed out with extremely low and falling whole-sale pricing. These huge swings make for budgetary planning and hedging challenges.

COuNTERINg ThAT ThREAT

The fast-changing and new market dynamics continue into 2015 and present some great opportunities for our industry. There are margin expansion opportunities while still providing consumers with a benefi-cial value proposition compared to other energy sources.

MFA Oil Co., Columbia, Mo.

ThREAT

Conservation due to more efficient furnaces, water heaters and ap-pliances, and the price spikes and transportation challenges that we faced last winter.

COuNTERINg ThAT ThREAT

MFA Oil is working with land-scaping professionals to grow gallons and educate them on the advantages of using propane to power their mowers. A lot of these mowers can burn more propane than the average home if it is a good mowing season. This is also building summer demand, which is an added bonus.
