About the Top Workplaces 2011 Survey

OutreachWorkplace Dynamics reaches out to employers with at least 50 employees in the BayArea to participate. We use a combination of print and online ads, and direct outreachto employers using direct marketing lists (e.g. InfoUSA). We have invited 1,370 companies to participate and have surveyed 109 of them. The surveyed companies employ 34,375 people in the Bay Area. 27,314 Bay Area employees have receivedsurveys, and 16,249 have responded.

Employee surveyWe survey employees at participating employers using either paper surveys or anonline survey application. Employees respond to a set of statements using a sevenpoint Likert scale. Each of the statements has been tested to ensure it has a highcorrelation with how employees feel about their workplace, which is calculated by correlating the statement responses to a control question which asks each employee to rate their workplace on a scale of zero to 99.

Response requirementsWe require a response rate of at least 35 percent for employees based in the Bay Area. In addition, employers with 85 or fewer Bay Area employees must have at least 30 responders. We encourage employers to survey all employees, but large employers can choose to randomly sample their Bay Area employees. At least 500 employees must be included in the random sample for employers 2,500 or less. Forthose employers over 2,500 but less than 5,000 employees, we require 20 percent minimum distributed. For employers 5,000 or more the minimum is 1,000 surveys distributed.

Testing for questionable resultsAfter the survey is complete, we first run a series of statistical tests to look for any questionable results. We disqualify a small number of employers based on these tests. As the effectiveness of these tests depends on employers not being aware ofthem, we do not publish the details.

Selection of Top WorkplacesWe categorize the employers into size bands because smaller employers tend toscore higher than midsize employers, and midsize employers tend to score higherthan large employers. We then rank the employers within their size band based solelyon the employee responses to the survey statements. The top employers in each sizeband are then selected as the Top Workplaces in the Bay Area for 2011.

Sereno Group wants to thank our employees for making theSereno Group a Bay Area Top Workplace 2 years in a row.

The founding members of the Sereno Group began with

the simple yet determined goal of redefining today’s real

estate practice. Motivated by the continued dilution of the

quality of service being provided to clients by mega-firms,

a small group of seasoned, top producing agents realized a

growing need for more accountability to and responsibility

for the client/transaction process and for the quality of the

client’s experience.

They realized that in order to accomplish this goal, they would have to create a company

that proudly returned to the Silicon Valley’s rich real estate history; one focused on

strong local ownership and leadership, a tighter core group of agents working together,

and a movement back to the benefits of deep community-based relationships.

The Sereno Group formed around these basic ideas:

• Strong local ownership and leadership.

• A distinguished, core group of experienced, highly productive sales professionals

with a strong moral obligation to the highest ideals.

• Deep ties to the local community as lifelong residents and professionals.

• Direct accountability to our clients from the Owner and President to the sales

professionals to the support staff.

• An obligation to create a responsible and thoughtful real estate experience for

everyone we serve.

• A reputation based upon quality of service and not motivated by bottom line,

short-term goals.

Each Sereno Group member pledges to be the single positive difference in our clients’

experience. Each Sereno Group member pledges to bring to our clients what they

rightly deserve: our very best through teamwork, concentrated effort and a standard of

excellence. BAY

COMMUNICATION

Strong companies thrive on opencommunication with their employees

Open communication is, for many companies in the Bay Area and elsewhere, the roadmapto success. When all opinions are encouraged, voices are listened to and observations areshared, the pathway is straighter and the goals are more easily attainable. Recently several of

the Top Work Places 2011 companies revealed their strategies and experiences for fostering great communication with their employees.

RMR Financial is big on meetings, webinars and email messages to and from the leadership. Anannual sales kickoff is held annually in February, which reviews the previous year and showcasesthe goals for the current year. Sales and management meet semi-annually, regional loan officers meet with their branch monthly and sales training on new products, prices and guidelines is scheduled as necessary. Webinars allow employees to discuss a variety of topics, while the presidentproduces a quarterly update for all staff. Headquartered in Los Gatos, RMR has 151 employees and ranked 3rd in the midsize business category.

An annual employee health faire is just one way that Round Hill Country Club engages with employees at its location in Alamo. They also do regular department meetings and weekly emailupdates, publish a monthly publication for staff and membership and maintain Facebook and Twittersites. An employee portal website is another resource for communication. Round Hill employs 161 employees and ranked 6th in the midsize category.

Face-to-face communication works well for Pet Food Express. “Every store in our chain isvisited every weekend by a corporate manager, including the owners and the COO. They do store inspections…but their primary function is to reach out and touch our employees and customers so that we do not become isolated from the ‘ground truth’.” Additionally, store managers, assistantmanagers, lead associates, group mentors and district managers attend a half-day meeting once a month with senior management, buyers and various corporate department heads. One meetingis held each week so that the groups won’t be too large. They also publish a monthly newsletterand regularly send out e-mails to explain what is going on. Pet Food Express employs 459 and was ranked 8th in the midsize category.

With 263 employees, the City of Brentwood stresses communication both up and down theorganization. To bolster their communication, they utilized an outside consultant who led sessions within departments as well throughout the organization. An organizational development steeringcommittee has been created with employees at all levels of the organization and spanning across all departments. The city publishes a monthly employee newsletter and holds periodic employeeroundtables where the city manager provides updates on important issues. A weekly update from the city manager is posted online and provides current information from various departments regardingprojects and activities. The City of Brentwood ranked 9th among midsize businesses.

NOVA, a nonprofit based in Sunnyvale with 81 employees, hosts an annual all-staff offsite bothto further develop the sense of community and build morale. The organization also holds monthly all-staff meetings to share updates and information on projects and events. NOVA’s director writes a regular internal blog to provide in-depth information on administrative issues. The director alsonoted that staff from various units host wiki pages to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the organization’s current projects and trends by staff. Individual units meet on a regular basis and

e-mail and small group meetings are used when needed. NOVA ranked 9th in the small businessclassification.

Senior management at Loring Ward, San Jose, holds quarterly update meetings for all employees where financial results and other issues or iniatives are reviewed. An annual employee meeting— as well as many smaller events — are scheduled throughout the year. “We also believe that employee feedback is critical and conduct an annual employee survey,” the company noted.“Because we are a small company, we are also very open to feedback and can implement changesquickly. Our CEO loves to solicit employee feedback, often asking employees, whether in themailroom or in senior levels — ‘What can we be doing better? If you had a magic wand, what wouldyou change?’ We have an Open Door policy and there is daily interaction with executivemanagement plus departmental luncheons that include the CEO and CFO.” Loring Ward is aninvestment management company of 61 employees. It ranked 10th among small businesses in theTop Work Places.

A 130-employee enterprise firm in Mountain View, Clearwell has become “famous” for their bi-weekly all-hands meetings, which are a tangible symbol of its open, transparent culture, reportedthe company. REWARDS / MOTIVATION

Company rewards motivate andvalidate employees

By Linnea Smith JessupSpecial Sections Editor

From a handshake to a bonus to vacation or other positiverecognition, Bay Area employees at the 65 companies determined to be the Top Work Places 2011 are being

validated for the often demanding jobs they do, as gleaned fromresponses from these employees. Take a look at some of thecreative and innovative ways companies acknowledge theiremployees’ efforts.

Success Factors, ranked 17th among midsize businesses, said employee to employee validation is just one way workers are rewarded. All employees are able to show their appreciationand thanks to another employee by sending them a recognitionbadge, selecting from among several positive terms from“amazing” to “team work” and adding a personal note which canbe viewed by all employees (over 300).

Similarly, Real Time Innovations employees can give any othera “Hero Reward” bonus, filling in a certificate with the reason for the reward. The recipient gets a gift card and recognition atquarterly company meetings. Teams can also present awards, which come with a monetary bonus. One employee per quarter isgiven an “Excellent Award” which includes a week’s vacation and a monetary bonus. As well, the entire company (60 people) is part of an annual profit-sharing plan. The small company ranked 16thin the Top Work Places survey.

Not all rewards are monetary or tangible. Some companies explained their everyday ways that staff are rewarded.
