I never dreamed about success, I worked for it. -Estee Lauder TOP GUNS 03 After leading Wipro for 53 years, Azim Premji called it a day on June 6. And with that, the curtains fall on a long and illustrious journey. We profile the titan who is known for his simple living and high thinking... THE MAN The 73-year-old, who had to cut short an engineer- ing course in Stanford and return to India to pick up the family baton after his father’s death in 1966, has guided the cooking oil company through the decades, leading its tran- sition into a successful IT major. And it was under his stewardship that Wipro listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 2000, and became the fastest wealth creator in five years (1997-2002). NOT JUST TECH Premji has made headlines beyond IT. His leadership skills — high on integrity and corporate governance — have been cited as an ex- ample for the tech (and non- tech, too) industry to follow. Add to that his intensity, ethics and never-say-die at- titude, and there emerges a leader-mentor-motivator, who has left an impression on millions of Wipro em- ployees, past and present. AZIM PREMJI DOB: July 24, 1945 Claim to fame: CEO, Wipro (retired recently) Net worth: PREMJI: THE PHILANTHROPIST “YOU CANNOT MANDATE PHILANTHROPY. IT HAS TO COME FROM WITHIN, AND WHEN IT DOES, IT IS DEEPLY SATISFYING” Premji has been one of the most generous donors among India’s industrialists. In March, he pledged 34% of his Wipro shares to Azim Premji Foundation, a philanthropic initiative focused primarily on education, taking the total commitment to the organisation to 67% of his wealth, or ` 1.45 lakh crore. The foundation set up the Azim Premji University as a not-for-profit venture in 2010. The Premji family holds a 74% stake in the software exporter. HIS SALAD DAYS AS A KID: I was very naughty when I was a kid. And in those days, you got rapped on the knuckles, you got hit on your head and you had to be kneel- ing outside the class for a real- ly long time. At least some of those practices are no longer there. But I spent a lot of time outside the class, kneeling. ON HIS MENTOR: I was guided by the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, which said that wealth is a trusteeship and should not be used as ownership. In fact, when one is showered [with] wealth beyond what one de- serves, I think the question re- ally arises is, what does one re- ally do with this wealth? If you are going to create a business, make sure it is your hobby, your passion or something that you really enjoy. Don't just set out to do something for the sake of making money. I think lots of people have lots of great ideas, but very few actually go out and try to put them into practice. Make a positive difference and do some good The first thing to do if you want to become an entrepreneur is to have an idea that is going to make a positive difference to other people's lives. A business is simply that. If you're running a busi- ness you are in a position where you can make a hell of a differ- ence in this world. I also think it's great for the staff of a company that they can feel good about a company actually doing good. Believe in your ideas and be the best You definitely need to believe in your idea. There's really no point in doing something in life unless people feel really good about it and proud about it. You've got to have passion for it and you've got to be able to inspire other people to have a passion for it too. If an idea is a good idea you should be able to pitch it in two or three sentences and two or three sentences fit very neatly on the back of an envelope. Don't give up It's extremely important not to give up. There have been situations in my adventures, like crossing the Pacific in a balloon, where the odds were stacked very heavily against our survival.
