Several runners from all around the Beehive State abso-lutely shined in what turned out to be by far the strongest women’s field in the history of the NordicTrack Top of Utah Marathon.

Cynthia Fowler and Janae Richardson made sure the 14th installment of the race had a distinct Weber State feel to it.

Running 26.2 miles is a daunting goal for most people.

Think about covering that dis-tance without shoes. That’s what Jon Eichert, of Nashville, Tenn., did Saturday during the 14th running of the NordicTrack Top of Utah Mara-thon.

His mode of running certainly is an attention grabber, and Saturday was no different.

“Every time people see me they comment,” Eichert said with a laugh. “Fellow racers are very sup-portive. Crowds, spectators are very encouraging. People think it hurts and I get ‘go barefoot runner’ a lot.”

And he did it in impressive fash-ion. The 38-year-old crossed the fin-ish line in 3 hours, 7 minutes and 26 seconds. He was eighth in his age group and the 57th person to com-plete the marathon. Most impor-tantly, however, was the fact he

qualified for the Boston Marathon.“I made it by about two-and-a-

half minutes,” Eichert said. “So, that’s good.”

The TOU is one of the last mara-thons one can run a qualifying time

for the 2013 Boston Marathon. This was his first TOU Marathon, his eighth overall and his fourth running barefoot. Plus, his time Sat-urday was a new

personal record.“I’ve only been running for three

years and when I bought my first running shoes and put them on, it felt like sofa cushions on my feet,” Eichert said. “It didn’t feel right. I felt disconnected from everything, but everybody was wearing shoes, so I figured that is what you are supposed to do.”

However, the more he ran, the more he learned about the “barefoot

running technique.” Having tender feet, he decided to give it a try. Each day he ran further, working up the mileage slowly. Actually, it took him more than two months to run a mile barefoot.

Now he has run marathons in Bos-ton, Washington D.C., Nashville and Cache Valley barefoot. He is training for an ultra run in Nashville in early November, which will be a 50-miler.

He invites anyone to feel his feet, which are soft.

“Every time I run, I exfoliate my feet, it’s incredible,” said Eichert, who labels himself a hater of run-ning until being introduced three years ago.

He ran a 5K and finished second and was hooked. He said most peo-ple are like that.

Does he wear shoes at all?“When I have to,” Eichert said.

“I got kicked out of a gun store the other day because I was barefoot.”

Becky Andrews knows a thing or two about resiliency.

After all, she not only has raised a family, received her bachelors and masters degrees from Utah State, opened her own therapy practice, run a few half marathons, and completed her first full marathon at the 2012 Top of Utah Marathon, but she managed to do all that and more with an extra added burden.

Andrews is legally blind. At the age of 18, Andrews

was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa, a degenerative eye disability that has taken her eyesight from her.

But her eyesight seems to be the only thing that has been taken from her. She hasn’t lost her life, her joy or her desire to achieve. She creates that for herself.

“I think we all have that resilient spirit, that ability to bounce back in difficult times,” Andrews said before the TOU Marathon. “I’m grateful for that. I think it’s inspired by others and that we can do hard things. We feel good when we do hard things. I don’t think this is going to be easy, but the journey has been very rewarding.”

Andrews, a Cache Valley native who grew up in Provi-dence, ran in her first full mar-

Resilient through it all

By Jason Turnersports writer

There are a wealth of U.S. citizens who make it a goal to visit all 50 states during their lifetime.

Eugene DeFronzo has certainly checked that objective off his bucket list, and then some. Not only has the Chesire, Conn., native done this, he has competed in a marathon in all 50 states eight times over.

“It’s really great because I do sightseeing all of the time,” DeFronzo said. “... It’s really great to see all different kinds of people and dif-ferent altitudes and different scenery. And so that part of it is worth it going through all of the aggravation.”

Quite simply, DeFronzo eats, sleeps and breathes distance running. Case in point: Since completing his first 26.2-mile race — the New York City Mara-thon in 1991 — the 76-year-old has finished 511 marathons.

Marathon No. 511 for DeFronzo took place Saturday morning at the 14th

annual NordricTrack Top of Utah Mara-thon — a race the longtime personal-injury lawyer has competed in five times now.

DeFronzo has been in Cache Valley since Wednesday and made it a point to travel to Bear Lake and enjoy a famous raspberry shake.

“I like Logan because the people are nice, the scenery is beautiful and the race is down-hill,” said DeFronzo, who has ran in the Park City and Deseret News (three times) marathons in past years.

Needless to say, DeFronzo, who was born with a curved spine, has caught the running bug and some. DeFronzo originally started running at the age of 56 because he wanted to get in better shape.

A lot of senior citizens aren’t as active as they could or should be, and DeFron-zo hopes to help as many as he can buck the trend.

“You’ve got to keep your mind going and your body going or you’re going to

athon during this year’s Top of Utah, finishing with a time of 5 hours, 12 minutes and 55 sec-onds. But this is not the end or the beginning of anything for Andrews. It’s just another step in an amazing life that has seen her accomplish what she sets out to do.

Not one to let life’s disap-pointments keep her down, Andrews has been staying active her entire life. Her and her hus-band Steve, who also hails from the valley, love to stay active by going on tandem bike rides. That

eventually led to running, which is something she describes as a freeing experience.

“I think that is one reason why running is just so free,” Andrews said. “When you first loose your eyesight, it seems so restricting. … The experience of running is kind of like that feeling of walking with a guide dog; blindness becomes not a big deal. It’s kind of secondary. I feel comfortable.”

Andrews, who uses a guide dog, Crickett, also must rely on friends and family to help

guide her as she is running in races. She uses a tether system that allows her to stay connect-ed to someone who leads her in the right direction, helping her avoid pot holes and other potential obstacles.

This year, for her first mara-thon, she used the aid of two special friends, Suzette Hirst and Brenda Petersen.

“They’re pretty incredible,” Andrews said of her partners. “I wouldn’t be able to do it without them. … I can do a lot of things independently, but

this is one thing that I wouldn’t be able to do without them.”

Hirst and Petersen took turns, each running with Andrews for five miles using the tether sys-tem. Andrews husband was on hand, while Crickett was sup-posed to complete the last five miles with her.

The tether is about 12 inches long and with it, Andrews will be able to run in the marathon as a visually-impaired person.

But Saturday’s race has been

a long time coming. Andrews has been running with her hus-band and with friends for more than four years. She has been running with Hirst and Peters-en for the last year in prepara-tion for the marathon.

However, while they may have the system down now, Andrews said she wasn’t as confident at the beginning.

“The first time I met my friends to run, I was pretty nervous to put that trust in someone,” Andrews said. “It’s definitely quite hard, but worth doing.”

As she has proven with her life up to this point, Andrews is not content to remain in the same situation. She is constantly looking for a new challenge and a new way to push her boundar-ies. She hopes to qualify for the Boston Marathon and admits to having caught the running bug.

“I can see how running kind of gets into your blood,” Andrews said. “I don’t think

this is our last. We’ve really enjoyed it. We’ll see. We’ll do our best. That’s all we can do in life (is) our best.”

Being out with her friends and her husband are some of Andrews’ favorite things, and having the added challenge of being blind just adds to the trust that she is able to build with the people in her life. It’s the same kind of trust she has learned to place in one of her closest friends, Crickett.

“I love be active,” Andrews said. “It’s a fun experience to connect with friends. You have

to learn to trust people. Like when I first started to walk with a guide dog, you have to learn to trust your dog.”

Andrews and her husband both graduated from USU, and her two of her three kids have attend-ed or are attending currently the school. She thought it was fitting her first marathon was in a place where she feels comfortable.

“We’re Aggies,” Andrews said.As the name of her therapy

practice — Resilient Solu-tions — implies, Andrews has been resilient throughout all of the challenges that life has

thrown her way. But what is truly inspiring is not her ability to accomplish and achieve her goals and dreams, but how she achieves them.

“No matter what happens, I think it feels like life,” Andrews said of preparing for the marathon. “The journey or preparing is a victory.”

In that light, Andrews’s entire life has been a victory. She has shown and proved that great things can be accom-plished with dedication and that resilient spirit that she believes all people posses.

Eichert may return and run the TOU again if it fits his running schedule, which he called busy. He does triathlons, half iron-mans, 10Ks, marathons and other races — all barefoot.

Lovin’ the TOUHaving never heard of

Cache Valley, Don Bigger is now a big fan.

He lived in Las Vegas for 29 years and first came to northern Utah to run in the TOU Marathon. One of his children came to USU for graduate school and the more Big-ger visited the valley, the more he loved it.

“We fell in love with the valley; my wife and I just love it here,” said Bigger, who was a pacer Saturday for the 3:55 time. “... Who doesn’t like Blacksmith Fork Canyon? It’s a gorgeous marathon, it really is.”

This was the first time he was a pacer in a marathon. He wore a bracelet with times on it, so he could adjust along the route.

“It’s a great time,” Big-ger said. “You chat with them and try and keep their mind off the race. ... I told them the treat is at mile 20 I start telling jokes. It makes it funner for me.”

Bigger has now lived in the valley for five years, calling Providence home. Saturday was the 60-year-old’s 32nd marathon over-all and his sixth TOU.

Voice of the marathonEver since the TOU

started, there has been one man announcing the finishers.

Rob Flygare is perched on some scaffolding even with the finish line and welcomes the marathoners. His boom-ing voice gets the crowd excited and often elicits reaction from the runners.

“I’ve done some broad-casting and have known Bob (Henke, the TOU race director) for years, who asked me to do it,” said Flygare Saturday morn-ing before runners started crossing the finish line. “I love it. It’s one of the fun-nest things I do every year.”

Even when it has been bad weather. Over the years Flygare has sat through snow, rain and much warmer tempera-tures than Saturday.

While it gets a bit hec-tic at times, his job is far more easier than it was in the first few years. He had lists of names and binoculars to try and fig-ure out who was coming down the home stretch. Now a computer screen

lets him know who is approaching.

“I try and read them all,” Flygare said. “It’s a lot of names to read and my voice is pretty ham-mered afterwards, but I still love it.”

And he reads most of the names of the finish-ers, as he stays at least until the six-and-a-half hour mark.

“I try and stay here as long as people are com-ing through, because they deserve it,” Flygare said. “... I hope they have me do it as long as I can do it. It gets bigger and better every year.

“... I have such respect for anybody that finishes. It’s so great to be right up there and see their faces. I have absolute adoration for them.”

Has he ever thought about trading in the microphone for some run-ning shoes?

“My knees won’t allow that; I walk a lot,” Fly-gare answered. “I guess as far as walking, it’s inspiration.”

Flygare no longer lives in the valley, but he doesn’t mind the drive up from Salt Lake City each year.Familiar face in CrocsIt has become a regular

scene at the TOU Marathon.Sasha Pachev, who

calls Orem home, cross-ing the finishing line among the top plac-ers. The Crocs-wearing Pachev has never missed the TOU Marathon and continued his string of impressive, consis-tent performances. The 39-year-old has only been outside the top five once.

The two-time TOU champion added wearing Crocs a few years ago.

This time five of his seven children joined him in running across the fin-ish line, even though that is discouraged. Benjamin (13), Jenny (12), Julia (9), Joseph (7) and Jacob (6) joined their father near the finish. All five kids were wearing Crocs as well.

It could get more crowded in years to come as Pachev has two more children that watched from a stroller this time.

Mother-daughter runMarathons are certainly

a family affair. That was the case for

Laura and Alyssa Mikesell of Millville. The mother-daughter combination decided to do the TOU together. Laura is a veter-an, having already run five previous TOU Marathons. Saturday was the first for 18-year-old Alyssa.

They crossed together in a respectable 3:56:15. Alyssa actually was fifth in her age group, while 44-year-old mom was

20th in her classification.“I just wanted a new

challenge,” Alyssa said. “I did a half (marathon) last year, but I never thought I would run one (marathon). There is such a thing as a wall. I believe in it.”

The teenager started to feel stiff at mile 19 and by 23 she was really feeling it.

“But she kept going,” Laura said. “... She has those long legs and she did a good job.”

Alyssa used to ride a bike when her mother trained for other marathons and decided to get off the bike and join her this year.

Being a veteran run-ner, Laura set a pace and encouraged her daughter to keep up. While mom has run faster, she was proud of her daughter.

Future marathons together were a question mark after the race. How-ever, Laura believes they will run together again.

Marathon legendMurray’s Demetrio

Cabanillas enjoys coming to Logan. After all, two of his children ran for Utah State University.

The 57-year-old is a marathon veteran, hav-ing won the Desert News Marathon in Salt Lake City nine times. That used to be one of the premier marathons in the west.

“I wanted to run better than 3:30,” Cabanillas said.

On Saturday, Cabanillas ran his first marathon of 2012 and did clock in better than his goal with a time of 3:25:53, which was good enough for third in his age group and 150th overall.

“I felt like running this marathon and winter is coming,” Cabanillas said. “I decided I wanted to run one before winter comes.”

This was his fourth time running the TOU. He only does about one marathon a year now. His best time came in the New York City Marathon in 2:13.

He still runs 50 miles a week and when he gets ready for a marathon, he ups that total to 70 miles in a week.

“I want to stay healthy, so I keep running,” Caba-nillas said. “I really want my daughter to come back and win it.”

Carol Cabanillas was the top female finisher in 2005. She made the Olympic Trials, but has been busy with gradu-ate school. Her father is working on getting her to

return in the near future.Lending a shoulderAround the 25-mile

mark, Dean Ellis noticed a fellow runner was start-ing to weave.

He had visited with Michael Howell of Manti and knew he was trying to run the marathon in four hours. They both were on pace to do just that.

But then Howell really started to struggle.

“I was afraid he was going to fall right on the gutter at about 25-and-a-half miles,” Ellis explained. “I got on his downhill side, and he lost it completely. If that other runner hadn’t come along, I don’t think I could have kept him moving. His eyes rolled back in his head.”

That other runner was Kelly Thompson, who is from Central Point, Ore. Ellis and Thompson helped Howell all the way to the finish over the final 0.7 miles. They crossed togeth-er at the 4:05:27 mark.

“I feel bad because he really wanted to make that four-hour mark,” said Ellis, who is from Riverton. “I wasn’t worried about my time. I just felt like he needed some help.”

Had they not helped Howell, he would not have finished and would have been hauled to the hospital by an ambulance. Instead, he spent more than an hour recuperating under the watchful eyes of EMTs at the finish line.

Thompson disappeared into the crowd of runners, as did Ellis after being interviewed.

Team LuellaWhen Luella Flores

crossed the finish line, she was greeted by signs, noise-makers and lots of cheers.

There was no bigger fanfare for a finisher on the day as at least 15 family members and friends were on hand for the Salt Lake City woman as she crossed the line in 5:35:20.

“My supporters met me at mile 14, 17, 20, 22 and my son (Nick) ran the last half mile with me,” Flores said with tears rolling down her cheeks. “It was great.”

Flores declared this was her first and last mara-thon, having set a goal to do a marathon when she is 50. With her birthday just around the corner, the TOU fit the bill.

“I turn 51 in October, so

I had to get it in because of my goal,” Flores said. “... It was eight months of training and I don’t think I will do it again.”

As she left the runners’ area there was a sign that read: “You did it, now let’s eat some pizza.”Energizer marathonerThere he was, just like

clockwork.Orem’s John Bozung

completed his 209th con-secutive month of running at least one marathon. That is more than 17 years, for those counting.

“I finished, so that is all that matters,” Bozung said of his time of 5:21:01.

The 59-year-old rattled off marathons coming up on the schedule — Big Cotton-wood, St. George, Malibu, High Desert in California, Walt Disney World.

This was his 11th time running the TOU.

Awarding the medalsEach runner that com-

pletes the marathon gets a medal.

As they loop around from the finish line toward refreshments, one of basi-cally four people make sure to get a medallion over the head of the runner.

“It’s really neat to be here. It’s emotionally for you as you hand them the medallion,” said Mary Ann Henke, who has been help-ing out with the marathon from its start. “Can you tell I’ve been crying? It affects you. For some, it’s a huge accomplishment.

Joining Henke were daughters Alyssa and Paige Henke and Nikki Keller.

“You have to be careful with those that have hats on,” Alyssa said. “You are just excited for them because they finished. ... It’s really neat to see people accomplish their

goal to finish.”Is there a trick for get-

ting the medal around people’s necks, especially when there are many fin-ishing at a time?

“Ponytails and hats are kind of tricky, but we have it figured out,” Mary Ann said.

Late startThe marathon was a bit

tardy in getting started Saturday.

“We were 12 minutes late in starting the race,” said Jeff McMurdie, who is on the TOU committee. “One of the timers trucks’ battery died. Other than that, every-thing has been smooth.

Missing trophiesSome trophies for top

finishers went missing between Friday night and early Saturday morning.

McMurdie said a few $8 and $12 trophies were taken. Those who earned them will be awarded them, just a few days late.

“They didn’t take the big ones, just a couple of the small ones,” McMur-die said. “From that stand-point, it wasn’t bad. The people that earned them were really cool about it.”

Rock onThere was plenty of

music for runners and supporters to enjoy at Merlin Olsen Park.

Music was played before the runners started coming across the finish line, then Wasatch Back provided live entertain-ment. The band has been a staple at the TOU.

“They play an era of music that expands gen-erations,” McMurdie said. “The young 19- to 25-year-olds enjoy it and the 40-plus people grew up with it. It’s great.”

die quick,” he said. “... I would recommend running to everybody.”

DeFronzo has already done 31 marathons this year, including seven ultras, and plans on exceeding last year’s total of 39. The quick-witted DeFronzo has had some very interesting and unique experiences during his time running around the world.

Most of the marathons DeFronzo has par-ticipated in have taken place in the U.S., but he has finished a marathon in all of the Cana-dian provinces and territories twice over. Evidently, DeFronzo has a high tolerance for downright frigid weather as he has also done the North Pole and Antarctic Ice marathons.

According to the Antarctic Ice Marathon’s web-site, www.icemarathon.com, competitors encoun-ter as average windchill of -20 C. The race takes place a few hundred miles from the South Pole.

While talking about his experiences in Antarctica, DeFronzo recalled climbing a glacier three-quarters of a mile high and then sliding “on your behind down.”

DeFronzo also did a marathon in Kenya where he took a wrong turn and was fortu-nately warned before approaching an area frequented by lions.

Because of his age and spinal disability, DeFronzo rarely completes a marathon in under seven hours. His personal record is a 4:20.

“I have to make sure the race doesn’t have a six-hour time limit now,” said DeFronzo, who did not finish before the TOU Mara-thon clock was turned off at seven hours.

DeFronzo has battled through a series of running-induced injuries over the years, but he keeps coming back for more.

“I hope I’m an inspiration, but most of (the older people I talk to) say they don’t want to be bothered,” DeFronzo said with a laugh.

You’re in no man’s land with about six miles left.”

This was Foster’s fourth marathon in two years of competitive racing, and she came within 45 seconds of her personal best time of 3:03:37 that she ran in last year’s Top of Utah. Foster said she started running mara-thons because of the competition, and that she loves the endorphins that come at the end of a race.

First-time marathoner Lisa Watts of Nibley turned in a time of 3:16:01, for a third-place finish in the same division as Foster. Originally from

Krong was hoping to break the 2:20 barrier for the first time, but his hamstring tightened up with about 10 miles left in the race. Never-theless, Krong was still able to turn in 5:45 miles late in the race and beat his closest competitor by more than seven minutes.

“The last six miles just turned into grind-it-out mode, and I was able to hang on,” Krong said. “I slowed up a little bit in the last five or six miles, but I didn’t have any bad miles. I was able to main-tain a pretty good level all the way, so I’m definitely happy with that.”

As Krong approached the finish line, his girl-friend, fellow standout distance runner Andrea North, handed him a stuffed animal, which was a moose — which hap-pens to be Krong’s favor-ite animal and the logo for the TOU Marathon.

The duo purchased the toy for $1 at Deseret Industries with the hopes he would win the race.

“It gave me something to look forward to at the end,” Krong said.

Although Krong showed his mettle, it was a chal-lenging day for most of the elite men. Nine men aspired to complete the mostly downhill course — which started at Hardware Ranch at 5,614 feet above

sea level — in under 2:30.Only Krong and runner-

up Jimmy Grant accom-plished that feat. It was a very good day for the 34-year-old Grant, who ran a sub-2:30 marathon for the first time in 12 tries.

“It was a pleasant sur-prise (to place second),” Grant said. “You know, the goal today was to break 2:30 and I got that, and everything else is just an added bonus. It was all about just having the chance to run a fast time and have good competi-tion to carry me along, and I did that, so it’s a dream come true, really.”

Unfortunately for Kotter, he tightened up just past mile 18, Krong said, and faded down the stretch. The 27-year-old still did well enough to place third with a time of 2:31:08, but he was neck-and-neck with Krong through 18-plus miles.

Grant, who passed four competitors over the final six miles, didn’t catch Kotter until the final mile.

“He gave me a swat on the behind as I ran by and said, ‘Go get him,’ so it was really nice and encourag-ing,” Grant said of Kotter.

Another one of Krong’s primary challengers, Steve Shepherd, dropped out of the race. The for-mer Weber State runner placed third at the 2010 TOU Marathon.

On the contrary, it was a very good day for most of the elite women. Case in point: The top four women all crossed the

line in under 2:55, which is a first. Richardson shaved a whopping 10 minutes off her previous marathon personal record.

Richardson, who also placed second at the TOU Half a few weeks ago, finished with a time of 2:49:32. It’s the first time two women have ever eclipsed the 2:50 barrier in the same TOU Marathon.

“It’s treating me well,” Richardson said when asked about her success in Cache Valley. “Both times, the half and the marathon, have been beautiful cours-es and a beautiful day, just perfect weather for run-ning fast and girls to chase down. ... It’s fun to have it be competitive. It makes

you better.”Like Richardson, Fowl-

er took a multi-year break from running while giv-ing birth to a pair of chil-dren. Both women have 1-year-olds, suggesting just how quickly they were able to return to or close to their top form.

Fowler, who won the Ogden Marathon in May, once ran a marathon in 2:41, but that was recorded in her pre-children days.

“It’s so great. I love run-ning and so it’s nice to do it competitively and be able to do it well again,” said Fowler, who now has three marathon victories to her credit. “It’s a great feeling.”

The Farmington resi-dent led the women’s race

from start to finish and was on track to break the course record — which would have entailed a $500 bonus — for at least half the race, she said.

Fowler, who placed 14th overall, did run with a group of guys until mile No. 18, but felt she got caught up in trying to hang with them, which hurt her at the end.

“I feel like I kind of died over the last six miles, but that’s OK,” she said. “It didn’t feel as good as I would have liked, but mar-athon’s are rough. They don’t always feel good.”

Likewise, Krong was happy he had someone to run with for much of the race. That wasn’t the case at the TOU Half, where Krong, who runs profession-ally for Saucony, basically ran an individual time trial.

“It definitely makes the first half of the race a lot easier, just to have some-body on you,” he said. “But I’ll be completely honest, when Jon dropped and I was running solo, it was kind of a relief. Once I got to mile 20 and I felt like, ‘All right as long as I don’t blow up, I’m going to win the race.’ And it’s a good feeling to know that.”

All of the 1,535 runners who completed the course in under seven hours were aided by a tailwind heading down Blacksmith Fork Canyon. Grant, who lives in Missoula, Mont., certainly appreciated it.

“The downhill was actually tough on me,” said Grant, who credited

former Utah State dis-tance runner Devin Lang for pushing him along. “I could feel it after maybe four miles, so I was won-dering if I could hold out. But the tailwind hit and all of a sudden I got a second wind, and I was like, ‘Man, this is good.’”

Grant, who played club hockey for the Univer-sity of Montana, was sup-posed to compete in the 2009 TOU Marathon, but dropped out due to an inju-ry. Needless to say, he got his redemption Saturday.

Placing behind Krong, Grant and Kotter on the men’s side were former Aggie great Jason Holt (2:34:29), two-time TOU champion Sasha Pachev (2:34:46), USU student Joe Furse (2:39:40), Lang (2:40:09), Michael Wilson (2:41:06), Ken-neth Smith (2:42:45) and Albert Wint (2:43:40).

Allie Scott, the only three-time champion in TOU Marathon history, placed third with a time of 2:53:44. The USU graduate was attempting to become the first-ever person to win three consecutive titles.

Rounding out the top 10 women were two-time TOU Half champ Stefanie Talley (2:54:29), Rach-elle Wardle (2:58:49), Logan’s Mandy Foster (3:04:22), Kimbery Cow-art (3:04:33), Stephanie Parke (3:07:24), Key-sha Stutz (3:14:44) and Nibley’s Lisa Watts (3:16:01).

California, Watts is a student at Utah State, choosing to move to Utah because she has a lot of family in Cache Valley. She said the thrill of competing drove her to run.

“It feels pretty good considering it was my first one,” Watts said. “I wanted to finish in under three hours and got pretty close, so I’m pretty proud of myself. I kept my eye on the pacers and made a goal to not let too many people pass me.”

Right on the heels of Watts was RaLee Eck, a resident of Smithfield. A mother of four, Eck finished 20 seconds behind Watts with a time of 3:16:21 to finish second in the 35-39 division. Eck started running in marathons after the birth of her first child, and Saturday’s race was her 42nd marathon in 16 years.

“I knew it would be hard to place high today because there’s a lot of fast women here,” Eck said. “I felt great coming down the canyon, and I use Hollow road as a benchmark to see if I can keep pushing it, but it caught up with me about mile 21.”

Running in his first marathon and representing Utah State, Devin Lang finished seventh overall with a time of 2:40:11. A Kaysville native, Lang is a member of the cross country and track teams at USU, is studying biology and preparing for an LDS Church mission to Washington on Sept. 26.

“This was way harder than any col-lege race,” Lang said. “I wanted to finish in about 2:35, but I fell apart. It was good though. (Top 10) was my goal going into it. It was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be.”

Another Aggie was Seth Hansen, who finished in a PR 2:55:20.

“Three years in a row,” Hansen said. “I’ve improved every year and I love it. I don’t know why. Some crazy part of my brain decided to do something I

haven’t done and it’s become an annual thing. I just like challenging myself to do something I’m not sure I can do.”

Hansen is a senior in biological engi-neering at USU, and ran sporting a shirt that read, “I love Mom” across the front, and “Sponsored by motherly love, thanks for paying my registration fee,” across the back after his mother paid his race fees as a birthday present.

In addition to Furse, Foster and Ander-son, two other valley residents won their age division in Smithfield’s Bill Emmett (60-64) and Smithfield’s Robert Mantz (clydesdale, over 200 pounds). Emmett finished with a time of 3:36:05, while the 44-year-old Mantz clocked in at 3:16:37.
