When you set up your Twitter account, you’ll need to complete your profile, which will include your name, a biography of 160 characters, location and your birthday. You can be specific about your location, for example Manchester, or just add general information, such as UK.

Adding your birthday is optional – although Twitter asks for this you don’t have to complete it.

Your Twitter account will automatically be set to be public unless you change this. A public account can be viewed by anyone on Twitter, whether they follow you or not.

If you want to restrict who can see your tweets you can protect them – click on Settings and choose Security and Privacy in the left menu. Scroll down and tick Protect my Tweets.

If you have protected your tweets, only your followers can see them.

If you want to follow a public figure or celebrity look for the verified symbol next to their Twitter handle to see if an account is genuine.

Twitter shows you how many accounts you are following, and how many are following you – this is displayed under your Twitter handle. If you select Followers then it will show you if you’re currently following them back.

It is good idea to behave in the digital world as you would in the ‘real world’, so be mindful of what you say or share on social media. Avoid posting inappropriate content, including photographs or video, of either yourself or other people.

If you want to delete a post, click on the next to the post and select delete. If you have liked something by mistake just click the heart again.

A direct message can only be sent if you both follow each other, and is a private message visible only to the two of you.

If you want to receive direct messages from people you don’t follow you can click on Settings and choose Security and Privacy in the left menu. Scroll down and opt to Receive Direct Messages from anyone.

Twitter is a social media site so try to be social by retweeting and liking approipriate content! You can retweet people’s content, or you can use the ‘retweet and comment’ feature, which gives you the opportunity to add a comment in 116 characters.

To share content such as website pages or blog articles then you will need to use a link shortener like bitly or tinyURL – these are free to use but you will need to create an account. You will be able to see how many people have clicked on the links you have shared when you login to your account.

Ensure your anti-virus software and malware protection is up-to-date – this will help protect you when you click on links shared by other people.
