TOP WORKPLACES

If these companies were sportsteams, they would be considereddynasties.

More than a dozen companieshave been named Top Workplacesin San Antonio for the fourth yearin a row. The rankings cover small, medium and large companies in in-dustries from technology to bank-ing and health care. The San Anto-nio Express-News sponsors the an-nual survey, which began in 2009.

At Airrosti Rehab Centers LLC,its secret sauce for creating a TopWorkplace starts with its missionand employees, said Kelly Green, the company’s CEO.

“It’s really obvious, we want it tobe a good place to work,” he saidwith a chuckle. “That’s important. It you don’t want it to be, it won’tbe. Most companies want that, andwe want that and we work hard toachieve it.”

The San Antonio-based compa-ny’s mission is to help people withpainful injuries. And the peoplewho are hired to work there liveand breathe that mission to thepoint that it spreads to others, hesaid.

“You’re passionate about whatyou do, and you’re surrounded bypeople who are as well,” Greenadded. “It’s contagious. How canyou not enjoy doing something thattruly helps people? Only someonewith a really bad attitude wouldn’tenjoy that.”

Founded in 2004, Airrosti han-dles sports-related injuries and oth-er issues related to soft tissuearound the muscles, ligaments andjoints. They even provide therapyfor the Dallas Cowboys, HoustonRockets and other professional andcollegiate sports programs. Thecompany has more than 200 em-ployees and 90 treatment centers in

five states. “There’s a buzz around the work-

place that I have never felt before,”said one person in the employeecomments section of the survey.“Everyone here knows that we arepart of something amazing and ev-eryone wants to be a part of it.”

Beth Rizer has worked at Airros-ti for three years and already hasmoved up to director of active careand development. Aside from hernew role at work, she also is thesinger in the Airrosti band and aplayer on the company volleyballteam, which is in first place in itsleague, she said.

“It’s a lot of fun here,” said Rizer,27. “It’s a little cheesy, but I’m get-ting goose bumps talking about it.The fun is infectious.”

In 1990, the first Express Lubeopened along Nacogdoches Road. After more than two decades, it’sstill there and the company hasgrown to 25 stores with more than120 employees, said the company’spresident, Harold Smith.

He started the business beforeretiring from the Army as a lieu-tenant colonel. Today, it has growninto a family business where hiswife, son and daughter work. Andthat idea of family is somethingthat has spread throughout thecompany.

For Smith, working at the auto-mobile maintenance shop is morethan a job. It’s a place that givespeople a sense of worth and com-munity.

“This is a family-oriented busi-ness,” Smith said.

The company offers its employ-ees performance bonuses anddoesn’t shy away from giving work-ers advances or time off whenneeded. In addition, throughout theyear employees are treated to bar-becues, holiday parties and sport-ing events, and many of them play

on the company bowling, softball orflag football team.

“Everybody here is real close,”said district manager Keith Sand-efur, who has been with the compa-ny 22 years. “The company is realgood to you. Otherwise, I wouldn’thave been here so long.”

But the job itself is somethingthat can be just as rewarding.Training manager Eric Galindopoints to the company’s focus ontraining, efficiency and safety as ef-forts that put the business a stepabove the competition.

“With all the training we offer,we want to broaden everyone’smentality,” he said. “We’re not herejust draining oil.”

Shale formations in North America may help reduce the continent’s dependence on imported oil. But recovering oil and gas from tight rock 10,000 feet under ground requires a lot of skill. Even more than skill, it requires responsibility. Especially when the reserves are in close proximity to prime farmland and local communities. That’s why we remain committed to developing technologies that measure up to the toughest effi ciency and safety standards. Because we know that what’s great today can always be improved tomorrow. In the fourth year of San Anto-nio’s top workplaces competition, more employers participated andthe questions changed a little, butthe method stayed the same: Em-ployee responses determined thewinners.

“We feel if you want to find outwhere the best employers are, askthe people who work there,” saidDoug Claffey, president and CEO ofWorkplaceDynamics, the firm thathas been conducting the area’s topworkplaces evaluation since 2009.

He said other options are availa-ble, including one that convenes apanel of experts to evaluate man-agement comments about the com-pany and another one that allowsthe public to vote on the best work-places.

But employees provide a moreobjective analysis, and the surveysare structured to bring strengthsand weaknesses into clear view,Claffey said.

“It’s the most robust way to se-lect top workplaces,” he said.

The number of companies, gov-ernment agencies and organizationsthat agreed to be surveyed in theannual study increased by about 47percent this year to 126, the largestnumber ever in the review.

As a result, the number of enti-

ties recognized as top workplacesgrew from 50 last year to 80 thisyear. Each is recognized in the fol-lowing pages.

The top finishers in each of threesize categories — large for organiza-tions with 500 or more employees, midsize for organizations with 150to 499 employees and small withfewer than 150 employees — areprofiled in this section. Categoriesare based on the number of SanAntonio employees.

Also identified are the winnersof 15 special awards for top scoreson specific characteristics of theworkplace, such as training oppor-tunities and work-life flexibility.

Any company or organizationwith at least 35 employees was eli-gible to be nominated for consider-ation in the study, but workplaceshad to agree to let their employeesbe surveyed to be part of the analy-sis.

Claffey said that while not everycompany participates, the study ex-amines the companies and agenciesthat aspire to be top workplaces.

This year, 126 of the 696 compa-nies that were nominated for par-ticipation agreed to let their em-ployees be surveyed. A total of37,285 employees were surveyedand 24,081 responded, which setanother record for the local compe-tition.

If a workplace had less than 500employees, each one was surveyed. If it had 500 or more, a samplepool could have been selected forquestioning, Claffey said.

The survey included 24 state-ments that employees could re-spond to in one of seven ways, var-ying from “strongly disagree” to“strongly agree.”

The statements included “I haveconfidence in the leader of thiscompany” and “At this company,we do things efficiently and well.”

Claffey said the statements varyfrom year to year based on what’sbeen proven to be the most effec-tive.

Two new ones that were addedto the San Antonio survey assessedwhether the job met the expecta-tions the employee had when he orshe started and whether the man-ager cares about the employee’sconcerns.

A “control question” also is in-cluded that affects how the otherresponses are evaluated. It asks the

respondent to rate the work experi-ence at the company or organiza-tion, with a rating of 99 being thebest and 0 being the worst.

Claffey said responses from allthe statements produce an averagescore for each company or organi-zation. That score allows the work-place to be ranked in the appropri-ate size category.

Participating companies receive asummary of their employee re-sponses for free, but if they wantmore detailed results broken downby department or demographicgroups, they have to purchase it.

Claffey said about a third of theparticipating companies madethose purchases.

It’s useful data that can helpcompanies and organizations iden-tify their strengths and weakness-es, the CEO said. That, Claffeysaid, can help the employer im-prove.

He said more employers want tobe involved in the evaluation be-cause the economy is starting toimprove, and a good score can helpan organization attract top workers.

Companies often claim they’rethe best place to work, but whenan independent organization veri-fies that with a study, it’s valuable,Claffey said.

“It gives you an edge in hiring,”said Claffey.

It also boosts the morale of cur-

rent employees who have not hadmuch to celebrate about econom-ically in the last few years.

Both Curt Anastasio, presidentand CEO of NuStar Energy LP,which has finished first in the topworkplace survey for large compa-nies each year since it started, andDr. Richard Reyna, president andCEO of HealthTexas MedicalGroup, which won top ranking formidsize employers in 2010, agreedthat the recognition pays dividends.

“Being recognized as one of thebest places to work in San Antonioby the San Antonio Express-Newshas been such a tremendous honorfor us, and it has definitely helpedus attract and retain the best em-ployees in our industry,” saidAnastasio.

Reyna said the award has con-vinced some people to apply forwork at his company and boostsmorale.

“It has benefits,” he said.

NuStar Energy LP, one of SanAntonio’s fastest-growing compa-nies, was ranked No. 1 in the TopWorkplaces rankings of large em-ployers in a survey sponsored bythe San Antonio Express-News.

The award is not a new event atNuStar. The 2012 award from theExpress-News is the fourth year in arow. Earlier in 2012, NuStar madeFortune magazine’s list of “100 BestCompanies to Work For,” also forthe fourth straight year. Fortuneranked the company this year at No.15, up from No. 30 the year before.

Yet, company officials seem sur-prised and honored whenever thecompany is recognized in a new

workplace survey competition.NuStar, a publicly traded master

limited partnership, owns pipelines, terminals and fuel-storage facilities, including international properties. Italso owns two asphalt refineries andlast year purchased a crude-oil re-finery in San Antonio.

The company is growing quicklyand expects to move into a $100million, 300,000-square-foot head-quarters building near completion atThe Rim in late October.

“We have a very strong corporateculture which puts our employeesfirst,” said CEO and President CurtAnastasio. NuStar Chairman “BillGreehey established the corporateculture at (his first San Antoniocompany) Valero (Energy Corp.),

and we carried it on when we start-ed at NuStar.”

The company employs 1,900around the world, 1,500 in the Unit-ed States and about 550 in San An-tonio. It began in San Antonio in2001 with 160 employees. “We havea no-layoff policy,” Anastasio said.“We have never had a layoff at thecompany, and we are not going to.”

NuStar’s benefits package hasbeen rated the best in the industryby Hewitt Associates because it isvalued at 46 percent of an employ-ee’s salary.

“We have the best pay and bene-fits in the industry, independentlyconfirmed by consultants, and wehave tons of recognition for our peo-ple,” Anastasio said.

NuStar excels at community in-volvement and charity work, a fac-tor in workplace contests.

Asked “why I love my job,” oneemployee said in this year’s Express-News survey, “Management encour-ages giving back to the local com-munities where we work and pro-motes a caring and sharing spirit.”

About 70 NuStar employees siton 100 boards at charities, rangingfrom Meals on Wheels of San Anto-nio to Habitat for Humanity of SanAntonio. A special emphasis isplaced on volunteering and raisingmoney for the homeless shelterHaven for Hope, which was spear-headed by Greehey and openedabout two years ago. A companygolf tournament recently raisedabout $4 million for Haven forHope, Anastasio said.

The company had 100 percentparticipation in the most recentUnited Way of San Antonio andBexar County campaign and thelargest per-capita amount of givingin the country, Anastasio said.

Employees said they appreciate

NuStar’s policy of empowerment intheir jobs. “I am not micromanagedand have the ability to make deci-sions, and that saves times and frus-tration,” one employee said.

“We’re on the New York StockExchange and the Fortune 500, butwe don’t run the company that way, like some megacorporation,” Anas-tasio said.

“People have the power to dotheir jobs in lots of different ways. For example, our safety practices. The lowest person on the totem polecan entirely shut down an operationif they detect an unsafe practice. Itdoesn’t require running up thechain of command to receive per-mission to do that. If there is an un-safe condition, anybody is permittedto do something about it immediate-ly on the spot,” he said.

The open-door policy of manage-ment also is appreciated. “The espritde corps of all the departments andopen doors with every manager andexecutive” was cited by one employ-ee.

Anastasio said he holds roundta-

ble discussions at the company’sdistance locations with the rank-and-file workers without their localmanagers present.

“I went down to St. Eustatius (inthe Caribbean), and the people werecomplaining about the trucks theywere using, the poor conditions andair conditioners that were not work-ing. They showed me that. It wasdefinitely true. We were able to or-der another fleet of trucks to godown there and made sure thatmanagement doesn’t steal the trucks

and get them first so that the rank-and-file gets them. That’s just oneexample of something you can acton quickly,” Anastasio said.

Although pay and benefits areimportant, it is not everything,Anastasio said. “I think that whatmotivates people is to treat themwith respect. You put people first, lots of awards and recognitions. We’re constantly giving lots of posi-tive reinforcement to our people.”

It’s not often that people leavethe Phyllis Browning Co. Andwhen they do, it’s often with asense of regret.

A real estate agent with the com-pany who relocated to Austin to becloser to family recently sent com-pany founder Phyllis Browning anemail thanking her for the compa-ny’s support, ethics, professional-ism and management.

“You have set the bar very high,”she wrote. “So many of your agentshave touched my life and it is veryhard saying goodbye to this amaz-ing family.”

That family atmosphere is onereason that the Phyllis Browning

Co., a privately held real estatesales firm founded in 1989, won theTop Workplaces award for midsizecompanies.

Browning opened the firm onBroadway in Alamo Heights at atime when the real estate marketwas slow, but it’s since grown to180 employees and six offices. “Ibasically had a five-year businessplan,” Browning said. “The mostimportant thing I wanted to havewas a real quality company.”

She concentrated on the AlamoHeights, Terrell Hills and OlmosPark areas originally. The companygot a boost in the early 1990s whenAT&T relocated its headquarters todowntown San Antonio, bringingalong its executive workforce.

As the company added agents,Browning noticed more and moresales happening on the city’s NorthSide. “It just started growing,” shesaid.

Browning added an office onBlanco Road to give those agents astopping point between showings, but didn’t think the office wouldamount to much. “We opened thesecond office with the idea that the

agents would have a place to stopand use the bathroom and maybehave an office to write contracts,”Browning said with a laugh. Thatoffice on Blanco Road is now thefirm’s largest.

The company has been selectivein having a mix of new agents andseasoned veterans over the years, encouraging agents to interviewwith other firms to make sure it’s a

good fit. “We’re looking for a teamplayer,” Browning said. “The agentsin our company tend to think thatif it’s good for them, it’s good forthe company; and if it’s good for thecompany, it’s good for them.”

At company meetings, oftensomeone will get picked to nameevery person in the room. “It’s im-portant to us that we know eachother,” Browning said.

In the same vein, when it’s timeto take incoming calls from pros-pective clients, the agents assignedto cover the phones for that shiftwill head to the company’s head-quarters on Broadway, no matterwhich office they normally workfrom. Browning said it helps every-one get to know each other.

The company also has an awardsluncheon in January to recognizeemployees — and roast the manage-ment a bit.

Today, Browning is chairmanand CEO of the company and herdaughter, Jennifer Shemwell, ispresident. But both Browning andShemwell continue to list and show

properties.“That’s the part of the business I

enjoy so much. I love meeting newpeople. It’s just so much fun to putthem in the car and tell them aboutthe city. It’s almost like I’m a touristguide,” Browning said. “I don’tknow whether I’ll ever stop doingthat. It keeps me in touch withwhat the agents are going throughand what they have to do to takecare of a client or a listing.”

Real estate agent Pat Howell saidshe initially was attracted to the

company because of the way it mar-kets properties. But she said thecompany’s management treats ev-eryone with respect, and Howellloves that Browning and Shemwellboth take listings.

“They’ve got their finger on thepulse,” Howell said. “It’s nice towork for people who know whatyou do out in the field.”

Mary Ann Keller has been a re-ceptionist at the firm’s Broadwayoffices for seven years. “When Icame here I thought, ‘I like a com-pany that’s not a big corporation.’We’ve grown so much, but it stillhas that family feel,” Keller said.

When Keller tore her meniscus, her co-workers put together a list ofpeople who could bring her andher family meals. And when shewas caring for her ailing mother orneeded to stay home with sick chil-dren, no one at the company raisedan eyebrow. “They were so patientand so good about it,” Keller said.“Not all companies are like that. You’re not as stressed aboutthings.”

Little things like that translate in-to low turnover, said managing bro-ker John Flournoy.

“It’s a corporation, but it’s like asecond family. The agents and thestaff see it that way,” Flournoy said.“We don’t lose too many people, be-cause they trust the ownership.”

The company is best-known forselling high-end listings.

“Large sales are the heart andsoul of what this company does,”Flournoy said, noting that 45 per-cent of the company’s sales are forhomes priced higher than$500,000.

But the firm takes pride in pro-viding the same level of service nomatter the home price, Flournoysaid.

“I tell our agents that we give thesame excellent service on a$100,000 house that we do on an$800,000 house,” Flournoy said.“We don’t cut any part of our ser-vices if the house is smaller.”

Despite loving the students, shesaid she had grown disenchantedwith a state curriculum that in-creasingly emphasized studenttesting and rote learning overteacher creativity.

Rather than tying teacher con-tracts or bonuses to student testscores, Holleran said, Keystoneevaluates their performance basedon goals and projects they and theadministration develop each year.

“You feel respected here. Youfeel like a professional,” she said.“I was so surprised when theysaid we can write our own curri-culum.

“They hire people they believecan do the job.”

Other Keystone teachers echoedHolleran.

When prompted to complete thephrase “I love my job because . . .”in the Top Workplace survey, oneemployee said, “Keystone is a greatplace and I wouldn’t want to teachanywhere else.”

What attracts such devoted

teachers to Keystone, aside fromthe 17-to-1 student-to-teacher ra-tios, is the autonomy, said Head ofSchool Brian Yager.

“We don’t micromanage despitehaving high expectations. That’scrucial to our environment,” hesaid. “We provide a really pur-poseful and meaningful mission, then allow outstanding educatorsthe space to execute it.”
