2 TOPANGA STATION
About the Topanga Station
The new facility was built with Proposition Q funds. This was a citywidePublic Safety Bond measure that was approved by the voters in March2002. Prop Q is a seven-year program that provides $600 million for theconstruction of 11 police facilities and the renovation of 12 police facilities.
Topanga is the 21st police station for the Department opening at the sametime as Olympic Division, in Los Angeles. The cost of the Topanga Stationwas approximately $37 million. Construction began in January 2006 andwas scheduled to open October 2008. Although the project was finishedon time, there was a delay to open the station due to budget constrains.
All functions will be contained in this station including patrol, detectives, special investigations, commanding officers’ offices, community relations, records, etc. The station will be approximately 54,000 square feet includinglocker rooms, separate male and female cot rooms, break room, guncleaning/shoeshine room, uniform maintenance room, weight room and acommunity meeting room. There are patio areas designated for officers aswell as the public. The station includes a vehicle maintenance facility witha car wash and a secured parking structure for private and Police vehicles. The station will feature state-of-the-art security and access systems.
opanga was one of over 500 names submitted bycitizens in a Police Naming Contest organized byCouncilmembers Dennis P. Zine and Greig Smith. After much debate and deliberation, a NamingCommittee enthusiastically chose Topanga PoliceStation to be the name of the Los Angeles PoliceDepartment’s 21st Area Police Station. Topanga isa Shoshone Indian name believed to mean “a placeabove.” The Gabrielino-Tongva Indian Tribe, anindigenous Native American Indian Tribe of theSan Fernando Valley for almost 7,000 years, gavethe name to the area. Topanga starts at the junctionof Pacific Coast Highway and Topanga Canyon Blvd.,ending at the North end of the San Fernando Valleyand the 118 Freeway.

AREA OF COVERAGE
The new Topanga Division will cover the south west portionof the San Fernando Valley including the communities ofCanoga Park, Winnetka, West Hills and Woodland Hills. The Topanga Division will be taking over police serviceresponsibility from West Valley area beginning Sunday,January 4, 2009.
The city built this new police station because currentlythe West Valley Division covers police services for over52 square miles. Covering such a large area results inofficers spending more time driving to calls for service. The Los Angeles Police Department hopes to balancethe workload of valley divisions. When Topanga opens itwill cover only 32 square miles. This should help reduceresponse time by shortening the travel distance betweencalls and provide a more local community station to betterserve the west end of the valley.
GRAND OPENING JANUARY 3, 2009
We invite you to join us for the Topanga Division GrandOpening and Dedication Ceremony on January 3, 2009,at 10:00 AM. We look forward to having the entire westvalley community take part of this historic opening of LosAngeles Police Department’s 21st Police Patrol Division.
The Dedication Ceremony will be followed with stationtours, displays of police vehicles and equipment, boothsto sign up for volunteering, and the “Taste of Topanga”giving the community an opportunity to sample somelocal cuisine.
