PUBLIC AND PRIVATE WORSHIP… Objectives: explore the concept of Christian worship

MIRACLE OR NOT?A little girl went to her bedroom and pulled a glass jelly jar from

its hiding place in the closet.

She poured the change out on the floor and counted it carefully. Three times, even.. The total had to be exactly perfect.. No chance here for mistakes.

Carefully placing the coins back in the jar and twisting on the cap, she slipped out the back door and made her way 6 blocks to Rexall's Drug Store with the big red Indian Chief sign above the door.

She waited patiently for the pharmacist to give her some attention, but he was too busy at this moment. Tess twisted her feet to make a scuffing noise.

Nothing. She cleared her throat with the most disgusting sound she could muster. No good.

Finally she took a quarter from her jar and banged it on the glass counter. That did it!

Page 4: Topic 2: Religious and spiritual experience

'And what do you want?' the pharmacist asked in an annoyed tone of voice.. I'm talking to my brother from Chicago whom I haven't seen in ages,' he said without waiting for a reply to his question.

'Well, I want to talk to you about my brother,' Tess answered back in the same annoyed tone. 'He's really, really sick....and I want to buy a miracle.'

'I beg your pardon?' said the pharmacist. 'His name is Andrew and he has something bad growing inside his head and my Daddy says only a miracle can save him now. So how much does a miracle cost?‘

'We don't sell miracles here, little girl. I'm sorry but I can't help you,' the pharmacist said, softening a little.

'Listen, I have the money to pay for it.. If it isn't enough, I will get the rest. Just tell me how much it costs.‘

The pharmacist's brother was a well dressed man. He stooped down

and asked the little girl, 'What kind of a miracle does your brother

need?'

Page 5: Topic 2: Religious and spiritual experience

' I don't know,' Tess replied with her eyes welling up. I just know he's really sick and Mummy says he needs an operation. But my Daddy can't pay for it, so I want to use my money..'

'How much do you have?' asked the man from  Chicago.

'One dollar and eleven cents,' Tess answered barely audible. 'And it's all the money I have, but I can get some more if I need to.'

'Well, what a coincidence,' smiled the man. 'A dollar and eleven cents, the exact price of a miracle for little brothers.'

He took her money in one hand and with the other hand he grasped her mitten and said 'Take me to where you live. I want to see your brother and meet your parents. Let's see if I have the miracle you need.'

That well-dressed man was Dr. Carlton  Armstrong, a surgeon, specializing in neuro-surgery. The operation was completed free of charge and it wasn't long until Andrew was home again and doing well.

Page 6: Topic 2: Religious and spiritual experience

Mum and Dad were happily talking about the chain of events that had led them to this place.

'That surgery,' her Mum whispered. 'was a real miracle. I wonder how much it would have cost?'

Tess smiled. She knew exactly how much a miracle cost....one dollar and eleven cents...plus the faith of a little child.

In our lives, we never know how many miracles we will need.

A miracle is not the suspension of natural law, but the operation of a higher law.

OUR SURVEY SAYS… I wish, I pray…

87% of people in Britain say they have made ‘some kind’ of wish/prayer when they have been in need…

• The Lord’s Prayer is probably the best known Christian prayer and unites Christian denominations across the world.

• Many Christians believe that they have spiritual experiences through prayer and worship. They connect and communicate directly with God. (St Paul)

The Lord's Prayer Words (traditional)

Our Father, which art in heaven,Hallowed be thy Name.

Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth,

As it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,

As we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation,

But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom,

The power, and the glory, For ever and ever.

Amen. (Taken from the Anglican Book of Common Prayer, 1662).

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO HAVE A RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE? Described as a ‘tingly feeling’ When we hear a particular piece of music;

see the view from the top of a mountain; visit a big cathedral: reminds us of our smallness.

Rudolf Otto (philosopher 1869-1923) described these as spiritual feelings in which we experience God (Numinous). ‘Different from our ordinary everyday experiences; something we don’t have the words to explain.’

When Neil Armstrong first stepped foot on

the moon, he looked at the Earth and the

universe around him and said ‘There is a

God’. He no longer questioned it, he just

’knew’ it.

PEOPLE EXPRESS THEIR BELIEF IN GOD FOLLOWING THEIR RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE IN DIFFERENT WAYS:

Some may pray and spend time talking to God

Others may meditate Others may attend religious services, to

worship God with others Through symbolism Through music and art Food and fasting

The Eucharist (thanksgiving). The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, ‘This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.’ In the same way he took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.’ (1 Corinthians 11: 23-25)

This took place at the last supper that Jesus ate with his disciples before he was crucified. He shared bread and wine with them and said that this made a new covenant to replace the covenants which God had previously made with the Jews. (Transubstantiation)

Page 18: Topic 2: Religious and spiritual experience

How is symbolism used in worship? Symbolism has always featured prominently

within Christianity. A symbol is an image or picture that represents something else, usually having a deeper or more significant meaning. Symbolism is a major feature within worship.

Physical symbols can be found in holy buildings and many elements of worship are symbolic. They are used to help believers focus on their faith and worship God.

Music and Art in Christian worship

Objective: to think about art and music as ways to

express beliefs about God

Page 25: Topic 2: Religious and spiritual experience

HOW CAN ART AND MUSIC BE USED TO EXPRESS BELIEFS ABOUT GOD?

Art and Music are forms of expression that help to express complex ideas.

Judgement day Jesus Trinity Heaven and hell Singing gives a sense of union

Page 26: Topic 2: Religious and spiritual experience

ART… USED TO EXPRESS BELIEFS ABOUT GOD?

Art is a form of expression that help to express complex ideas.

Famous paintings are associated with religious ideas; Judgement; Jesus; the Trinity; heaven and hell.

Before the Bible was written in the ‘vernacular’; only way to understand ideas about God was through artwork.

Renaissance art, perceived as a "rebirth" of ancient traditions-it took on different and distinctive characteristics

Some Churches have religious art hung on their walls. Others (Quakers) prefer not to have images as this distracts them from their worship of God.

PilgrimageAround eight million

pilgrims and visitors travel to Lourdes each year, including many who are seriously ill or disabled. They go there to wash in the waters of the spring, which first appeared during the period of the visions. Pilgrims from England regularly leave Britain for Lourdes in specially built ambulances called ‘jumbalances’).

Page 33: Topic 2: Religious and spiritual experience

The Healing Water

Many come to be immersed in its waters, and some are healed. As many as 2,500 unexplained healings have been recorded. But many feel that the true miracle of Lourdes is, above all, the presence and goodness of God; their faith and a deeper spiritual feeling. Shantelle

MUSIC… Music unites believers and provides a

form of expression and union; music in hymns for reflection; special occasions (it’s in the words).

Christian music can be diverse; prayers can be sung; in some traditions the whole service may be chanted.

Evangelical Churches and Gospel churches, in particular use music to express their joy for their faith.
