What would fables look like if they had been written in the 21st century? For this project, students will pick a legend, a fable or a children's story from the target culture and rewrite it for today. They should adapt the location of the story, the characters and the action to represent today’s society. When they are finished, they can illustrate their new fable.

The students will create an action figure that represents them or a person they admire. They will start by describing its appearance, the position of it, and the type of action figure it is (historical, humoristic, current events, fantastical, etc.). Many of our animal species are in danger all over the world. For this project, the students should find a way to raise awareness for an animal in danger in a country of the target culture. They can create a comic book page, a quiz, a poster or a blog but it should explain why this animal is in danger and what we can do to save it.

A large car company asks you to create the mean of transportation of the future. How should people get from point A to point B? Would it be a train, a car, a bicycle, an hybrid of two things? For this project, the students will need to invent a mode of transportation to facilitate transportation, save energy and save money. They will need to talk about, the cost of the product, the way it works and explain the benefits of it. Finally, they will need to draw a sketch of their product.

For this project, the students will have to create a food product that they would sell in a farmer’s market. They will make a list of the ingredients, write the recipe, design the packaging and select a price for the item.

During this activity, the student will all try to sell the food product they have created and walk around the classroom to bargain with other students for their product. Every student should have 30 ‘’classroom dollars’’ to spend at the market and at the end, they should compare what they bought and crown the best bargainer of the class.

For this project, the students will create a survey on the favorite hobbies of their classmates and the activities that they like to do after school. They should write at least 20 questions discussing the hobbies, the frequency and the location of these activities.

For this project, the students will create a map of the target culture in the world presenting the favorite hobby of each country. They should write the name of the country, the hobby and explain what it consists of.

During this activity, the student work in small groups to present the principal hobby of a francophone country. First of all, they should select the country and find its #1 hobby. Then, they should prepare a poster explaining the hobby and put together a small demonstration of the activity. Each group should have their own kiosk representing a different country.

Do they own a family pet? Then, the students should draw a family portrait. At the end of the activity, the students present their family to the class or to a smaller group.

Imagine that you have made a new pen-pal abroad and he wants you to introduce your family. For this project, the student will need to make a short video presenting the members of their family. They will need to talk about their age, their occupation and their hobbies.

Is there slang used in the target language? A different dialect? Students should do some research to compile those terms and work on a dictionary with some example sentences and context for each term.

Topic: Money

Individual ProjectMy Budget

The student will have to make a budget for a week comparing their income (allowance, part-time job, gifts, etc) with the money they spend on food, clothes, activities, entertainment, etc. Then, if their budget is unbalanced they will have to find solutions to save money and cut back. On the other hand, if they aren’t spending over their income, they will calculate how much money they save each month and plan on reward and how many months it will take to be able to afford it.

Individual ProjectThe Currency

After studying the different currencies of countries in the target culture, the student will be asked to create a new currency representing all of the target culture. They will have to select and design the different bills and coins and explain what they are worth compared to our actual currencies.

Group ProjectThe World Exchange

For this project, the student will be divided in small groups and represent a country and their currency. The students will walk around the class and exchange their money with other countries to gain different currencies.

1) Every five minute, the teacher will modify the exchange rate and the students will be able to make 3 transactions (or the amount selected by the teacher) until the next round.

2) At the end of the five rounds, the students will exchange all their currencies in American dollars and select the winner of the game.

* If the teacher wants to extend the project on more days, the class can follow the real stock market and buy and sell

currencies every day.

Advanced ProjectA Semester Abroad

The students will imagine that they are going abroad for a semester and need to make a budget. With a 2000$ for every month, they will need to select the target language country of their semester abroad, find an apartment that meets their budget and make a list of all possible spending. At the end of their project, they should reflect on their budget and explain if their planning was accurate or if they need to reconsider some money distribution.

Slam is a type of rapping and poetry that is very popular in the Francophone world. For this activity, the students will write a slam on their daily life and struggles. They can pick a more specific theme (ex: learning a language, their city, the life in their family, etc.) or be more generic.

What are your favourite songs? For this project, the students will make a playlist of their 10 favorite songs in the target language from all the different styles and explain what they life about each song.

In small groups, the students will create their own radio show and prepare the content. Their show should have an opening jingle, 15 different songs that they can select from their playlist and two commercials. Each group should record their original jingle and commercials and present them to the class.

Advanced ProjectThe Celebrity

Imagine that you are interviewing a rock star or band from the target culture for this project… For their interview, the students should name which celebrity they are meeting, make a list of questions and invent some answers based on what they know about this singer or band.

For this project, the students will have to make 2 comic book pages depicting a day in their life. The first one, should be about a routine day where everything goes well and the second comic should be about a day where their routine goes horribly wrong. What happens? What do they do every day? What is part of their routine?

Imagine that you are being featured in a television show from the target culture and have to make a short video showing your daily routine. For this project, the students will make a video of the activities of a normal day in their life. They should talk to the camera and explain what they like to do and show the places where they spend the most time. If they cannot make a video, they can create a slideshow with pictures.

Group ProjectThe Theft

For this activity, the students will be informed that there was a theft in the classroom on January 11th and a tablet that was supposed to be given to one of the students in a raffle has been stolen. For the purpose of the activity, the students have to imagine that they spent the whole day with another student and that they did the same activities – therefore confirming their alibis and their innocence. During this classroom project, they will be in charge of conducting the interrogation, defending their innocence and finding out the culprit.

1) In groups of two, the students should invent and memorize an alibi by listing all the activities that they accomplished during the day in the smallest details.

2) Then, they will also come up with a list of questions that they want to ask the other pairs to discover the thief.

3) On the day of the activity, each pair will be split up and asked to stand in front of the classroom individually while their partner waits in the hall. The other students of the class will then ask 10 questions maximum to summarize the day of the suspect and then repeat the same questions with the partner writing down the differences in the stories as they

show up.

4) The culprits will be selected by counting the differences in the alibis and finding the pairs who had the most.

Note: While conducting this activity with younger students, it is better to dedramatize the ''thief'' aspect of the game so as not to frighten or ostracize the ''culprits'' at the end of the activity. For example, when all the interrogations are finished and the thieves found, the teacher can come clean and say that the students are actually all innocent and that HE or SHE is responsible for the stolen tablet and invent a reason to take the blame.

Imagine that you could be a King for a day. What would your routine be like? For this project, the students will be the King for a day and have to invent their routine. Will they keep the same activities as the real routine of a real historical King or would they change it completely?

They will need to describe their hero physically, list his likes and dislikes, make a psychological description and pick a superpower. At the end of the activity, the students will write a funny ad in the newspaper announcing their hero and offering his services.

For this project, the students will imagine that they are someone else taking part in a ‘’speed meeting’’ kind of activity. They will need to name their persona, pick their astrological sign, invent their family tree and talk about their hobbies. When they have created this character, the students should fill out his or her ‘’speed meeting’’ survey card.

For this activity, the teacher will split the class in groups of ten. Using the persona that they have created in ‘’Hello, how

are you?’’, the students will take part in a ‘’speed meeting’’ activity. They will have 5 minutes to talk to the person in front of them and find as many common points as possible. After the first 5 minutes, the students will rotate and talk to the next person.

For this project, the students will write a letter to a host family where they would be going during a semester abroad. They should introduce themselves, talk about what they like to do and their family.

For this project, the students will imagine that they are sick and going to a doctor’s visit. They should invent a character with an occupation and explain their physical and psychological symptoms. How does the injury affect the daily life of their character? How did it happen? What would they say to a doctor?

In small groups, the students will role-play a visit at the psychologist. Before the activity, each student should prepare a character and make a list of their story or problems. Then, the group should make a list of questions that the psychologist will ask. Finally, the students will take turn acting as the psychologist and as the patient and practice talking about their symptoms and asking the questions.

What are the principal health problems of teenagers in the target culture? Do they have the same health issues as the teenagers in your culture? For this project, the students will

select a health issue of their choice and make a poster explaining 1) how it is contracted, 2) the principal symptoms and 3) the steps to avoid it or get better.

For this project, the students will make a map of all the countries in the target culture and their weather. Which country is the coldest? The warmest? Do they all have four distinct temperature changes with the seasons? Then, the students will pick a country with an extreme climate condition (volcano, tornadoes, earthquake, etc.) and explain what it is and how it affects the population of the country. Do they have emergency measures in place? Does it happen often?

What do you do in your city when it’s sunny? And when it rains? For this project, the students will explain a perfect day in their city for each season. What kind of activities do they prefer? Do they like to stay in even when the weather is nice?

The students will make a brochure for tourist coming to their city for a visit. They will list the main attractions and the directions to get there from the airport. The students can pick a theme for the activity of their brochure (ex: The city getaway for adrenaline junkies, for foodies, for nature lovers, etc.)

What is required to face a natural catastrophe? For this activity, the students will pick a country where natural catastrophes are recorded and make a document explaining what to do in case it happens.

For this project, students will make their top 5 of the best dishes of all the countries in the target culture. They will have to find menus of some famous restaurants and select the dishes for each of the categories. They will make a top 5 of 1) the best dishes under 10$, 2) the best dishes with an unlimited budget, 3) the best vegetarian dishes, 4) the best dishes of 5 countries.

During this project, students will have to create their own original burger or sandwich. First of all, they will write a list of all the ingredients. Then, they will invent the recipe and finally, create an advertisement poster for their new product.

For this project, students will be working in small groups and creating their own restaurant for the classroom’s food court. They will have to find a name, write a menu and an advertisement for their ‘’specials of the day’’. For this project, the students will create their own food truck. They should draw the design of the truck, give it a name and prepare a menu with a twist on French cuisine. They should try to reinvent some classic dishes and give a theme to their food.

For this project, the students will take part in a dinner party television show where they have to prepare a meal for strangers and they get ranked on the quality of their food.

The students should make a list of the ingredients necessary for their meal, write the recipe and the cooking instructions and draw a plan of their plating. They should pick a typical dish and explain where it comes from.

For this project, the students have to write and perform a skit of a worst case scenario in a restaurant. Example: The server drops a dish on them, the hair of their date catches on fire, the server is always mixing up the order, etc.

Note: To make the activity more interactive, after the students have presented their skit once, they can repeat it but when a student in the audience clap his hands, he takes the actor’s spot and tries to improvise a dialogue to improve the situation of the diners.

For this project, the students will be food critic and have to select a restaurant and write a review for a magazine. They should give points for the quality of the food, the taste, the presentation and the service. They can write their critique in the form of a blog or a video review.

According to you, what is the best invention of the last 100 years? Which product has had the best evolution? For this project, you will need to make a brochure explaining which invention is the best of the century and how it changed people’s life. If you invention has evolved (ex: From VHS, to DVD, to Blu-Ray) explain how each new version was better than the last one.

Group ProjectImprove your life

In small groups, the students should come up with a technological invention that will simplify their everyday life using technology. What problem would it solve? Where would it save time in the daily routine? How would you build it? The rest of the class should then vote on the best invention.

Advanced ProjectLost in the city

Imagine that you lived in a world where there is no electricity or technology. How would your life be different? By the means of a personal journal in the style of Robinson Crusoe, explain your daily life as a citizen of a world with no technology. Talk about what you can and can’t do anymore and if some basic inventions have returned to replace the ones that you are using right now.

Individual ProjectA Day in the life

As a student, you want to participate in a job shadowing program for a day. Which job would you pick and why? For this project, the students will have to write a letter to an employer to participate in a job shadowing day. They need to explain why they are interested in the job, why they would be the best candidate and explain their relevant experience to the field.

Individual ProjectMy Business

For this project, the students will have to imagine that they are the CEO of a company and that they need to hire a new employee. They should invent a position, write a short description of the job, list the necessary qualifications and discuss the purpose of the company.

Group ProjectJob Hunt

In small groups, the students should ‘’apply’’ for the positions created by the other members of their group and perform an interview. The employer should prepare a list of 10 interview questions and the candidate should invent their own character with work experience and qualifications. After all the interviews, each employer should pick the best candidate in the group.

Advanced ProjectMy Resume

For this project, the students will write their own resume, explaining their work experience or relevant qualifications, their educational background and their qualities as an employee.

Imagine that a big tourism company asks you to create a top 10 of the things that can’t be missed in a city… For this project, the students will select and city from the target culture and list the 10 things that people should absolutely visit when they are travelling there. They should explain why each place on their list is a must see, how much it cost to visit and the opening hours and days.

Individual Project For this project, the students will imagine that a

Leg of the Race Francophone city of their choice is in the itinerary of the amazing race. They will need to create a challenge based on the landmarks of this city. What would the challenge be, where would they go in the city and where would it end.

Group ProjectThe Race Around the World

In small group, the students will pick a city and prepare a rally point for the classroom ‘’Amazing Race’’. With the map of the city, they should invent and itinerary and some questions or challenges for the other group of students. Then, when all the work is done, the groups of students should participate in each rally point and try to finish all the activities.

Advanced ProjectAn Unforgettable Trip

For this project, the students will become a travel writer and make a short blog of a trip in a country of the target culture. The students should explain if their trip was good or bad and what happened when they visited different landmarks in the city.

Individual ProjectMy Product

Which product should be sold all over the world? For this project, the student will pick a product in their culture that should be exported to countries of the target culture and explain why it would be a good idea. The students will write an advertisement’s pitch explaining all that this product has to offer. Does the product already exist in the other countries? Do they have a similar product that would offer some competition?

Individual ProjectMy Clothing Line

For this fashion forward project, the student will pick a fashion style of a country in the target culture and design their own line of clothes. What clothes are the best for the weather of the country? Why would people like it?

Group ProjectThe Expo

In small groups, the students will pick a trend in fashion, video games, mangas or television and prepare a kiosk explaining where this trend comes from, what it means to

the young people of this culture and how it is represented in society today.

Advanced ProjectImport or Export

For this project, the students will study the different objects in their home and find where they were created. Do they own anything that was made in a country of the target culture? The students should explain with charts which countries are the biggest maker of products and the reason why less and less product is produced locally. Are there any solutions?

Individual ProjectMy plans for the summer

What will you do this summer? Would you like to travel, attend summer school or get a job? The students will explain their actual plans for the summer and then create a fantasy version of their summer plans where money isn’t a factor. What would they like to do? Where would they go?

Individual ProjectWelcome to Camp

The students are the directors of a new summer camp from the target culture. For this activity, they will need to pick a location for their camp and then invent a theme (ex: Sports camp, outdoors camp, space camp, etc.). Who would be the targeted public? Would it be a day camp or a summer camp? How long would it last?

Group ProjectA week at camp

In a small group, the students will chose a summer camp in the target culture and invent the program for a full week of activities. What would the campers do? What material would they need? What would they learn? What time would they get up in the morning and go to bed? How big would be the groups?

Advanced ProjectA Humanitarian Trip

More and more, students participate in humanitarian programs during their college years. For this project, the students will have to select a humanitarian program in a country of the target culture and make a brochure for their parents explaining why they should go. They should mention

1) the location of the program, 2) the fees and funding necessary, 3) the goal of the project, 4) the length and the material needed and 5) the advantages of taking part in such a program.

Topic: Weekend Routine

Individual ProjectThe Robot

For this project, the students will create a robot to help with household chores. The students should make a list of the chores that their robot can do and make an online ad to sell it. They should draw a plan of their robot. Would it be able to vacuum with his hands? Would he make their bed and clean the dishes?

Individual ProjectA Guest at Home

For this project, the students will imagine that one of their friend in spending a weekend at their house. They will have to make a plan of all the activities that they will do and where they will go. Then, the students will write an email to that friend explaining what they will do while he or she is visiting.

Group ProjectThe B&B

For this project, in a small group, the students will create a bed and breakfast in a city of the target culture. They should list the amenities of their establishment, explain a weekend routine for the people visiting and create a brochure announcing their bed and breakfast.

Advanced ProjectMy life online

How would you describe the events of your weekend? Do you do many different activities or do you stay at home? For this project, the students will keep a blog telling what they have done on the weekend. They should write at least 5 different posts, talking about their weekend routine.
