REGION
OBJECTIVES
• We the members of group 5b intend to educate farmers on how to improve the fertility of soil through fertilizer application.
• Also to help the farmers through non formal education and practical application of fertilizer.
DEFINITION
FERTILIZER: Is any material, organic or inorganic, natural or synthetic, that supplies with the necessary nutrients in their right proportion for plant growth and optimum yield.
TYPES OF FERTILIZERS
• INORGANIC• ORGANIC
INORGANIC
These are fertilizers that are manufactured from inorganic materials.
• They are sometimes called chemical or commercial fertilizer. Examples include: NPK, urea, super phosphate etc.
ORGANIC
These are fertilizer that are obtain from living source. That means they are obtain from plant and animal source. Examples include compost, farm yard manure etc.
METHODS OF FERTILIZER APPLICATION
BROADCASTINGThis is the spreading fertilizer evenly on the
field.
RING PLACEMENT
This is where fertilizer is applied around the base of a plant 5cm away.
SIDE DRESSING
This involves the application of fertilizer to the soil on one or both sides of plant
TOP DRESSING
• This method is applicable to liquid fertilizer, the liquid fertilizer is sprayed onto growing crops with a standard sprayer or a watering can.
FACTORS THAT LEAD TO LOST OF SOIL FERTILITY
• Leaching• Bush burning• Soil erosion• Over grazing
SOIL FERTILITY CAN BE IMPROVE THROUGH THE FOLLOWING
• Fertilizer application• Cover cropping• Practicing crop rotation• Mulching
