PARTS OF A COMIC STRIP
Comic strips have characters, some have heroes, with superpowers, some ordinary people,
animals, etc.
These are the main parts of a comic strip we have panels, gutters, tier, caption, speech
bubble, thought bubble.
There´s also the name of the comic strip, the illustrator, if it has copyright, etc.
A panel is one illustration surrounded by a border, example
I. Read the following definitions and draw a line like the one already done of PANEL
• Gutter is the space between panels.
• Tier a single row of panels.
• Speech bubble surrounds what the character is saying.
• Thought bubble surrounds what the character is thinking.
II. Check with a peer if you both, have identified the same parts of the comic strip.
III. Write in the graphic organizer the comic strips you like.
IV. Look for a comic strip in a Sunday newspaper or in the internet, cut it out and paste it
below.
V. Identify the gutter, the tier, the speech bubbles, the thought bubbles, the panels in the
previous comic strip.
VI. Read the following comic strips and answer the following questions by pairs.
a) What´s the name of the comic strip? ____________________________________________
b) Who´s the illustrator?________________________________________________________
c) Who are the characters? _____________________________________________________
d) Does this situation happen also in Mexico or only in the USA? _______________________
e) Do you understand the expression SNOOORRRE? _________________________________
f) What expression do we use here in Mexico for the same situation? __________________

A final thing to consider when reading comic strips is the one related to Onomatopoeia.
Do you know what it is? _________ If yes, give an example. _______________________________
An onomatopoeia is a word that mimics or resembles the sound of a thing it describes, and it is
used sometimes in comic strips, there you´ll see it. Some examples are the following:
Impact sounds: boom, crash, whack
Nature sounds: splash, spray, drip
Machine noises: honk, beep, clang, zap
