June 2010
Guidelines for implementation of CO2-reducing initiatives
2
Guidelines for implementation of CO2-reducing initiatives
• Identify important operational areas internally as well as externally in which CO2 emission could be reduced
• Measure CO2 emission
• Identify drivers for CO2 emission
Baseline for CO2 emission
• Identify initiatives reducing CO2 from own and external parties in the value chain
• Identify risks and opportunities of outlined initiatives
• Prioritisation of outlined initiatives and connections between them
• Involve the ”right” persons/knowledge
Initiatives – opportunities and risks
• Perform analyses, calculations, effect assessment etc.
• Prepare business case
• Assess outlined initiatives in relation to effects, competitive advantages, investment etc.
• Select initiative for implementation
Direction of the CO2 journey
• Determine the target for CO2 emission
• Decide how and how frequently target figures and progress are to be reported and to whom in the organisation
• Decide how to communicate
• Determine actions when target figures are exceeded
Targets, reporting and communication
• Define roles and responsibilities
• Define and determine milestones
• Create anchoring through the right involvement
• Initiate communication internally as well as externally to e.g. customers, suppliers and cooperators
Start implementation
• Overview of the current CO2 level
• Experience in calculating CO2
• Prioritisation of CO2-reducing initiatives
• Overview of opportunities and risks
• Specification of relevant CO2-reducing initiatives
• Business case or reduction potential
• Targets and reporting structure
• Communication plan
• Action plan when effects are not achieved
• Implementation and communication plan
• The beginning of more environmentally friendly transport
Note: CO2 calculation models are available on the Internet, see e.g. http://www.key2green.dk/, which is a voluntary cooperation between the Danish environmental networks, or http://www.itd.dk/, which is an association of the professional road transport companies in Denmark.
