    Bullhead City River Regatta

The big summer event in Bullhead City,

Arizona for the past four years is the Bull-

head City River Regatta, a nine mile float

down the Colorado River. On August 13 th

and 14th dozens of teams of inner tubes and

some of the most creative and outlandish

floating vessels ever assembled will meet to

drift the river to Rotary Park. This year, the

Regatta stretches to Davis Camp, just below

the dam, where the big floats will be assem-bled and launched. Also new this year, the

large vessels will be allowed to use personal

watercraft to keep them away from docks

and rocks. Landing will be at Rotary Park

where the Ye Hafta Afta party will greet

floaters and spectators with a variety of ven-

    dors, music and more fun.

(Continued on Page 2 Column 1)

    Zion National ParkSummer Road Delays

The delays may begin in May 2010 and

go through October 2010. A road project

may cause delays for those entering or leav-

ing the East Entrance on State Highway 9

between the Entrance and route 89. Delays

could be up to 3 hours. Contact the Park

    for updated info

    Carole Lombard Crash Site Hike

On June 21st, 3 friends set off in search ofthis 1942 airplane crash site. The trio was

armed with some vague information off the

internet. Though the venture proved unsuc-

cessful, all are always up for a new hike into

the unknown. Another attempt is planned.

    Simply searching for information on

Carole Lombardand about the crash that

happened some 68 years ago, interested us

enough to start researching some of the his-

tory. We are hoping someone reads this

and can provide more detailed information.

A jeep was used to get the team up some

rugged terrain into the general area beforesetting out on foot. The trio hiked a short

distance and then started up a small wash at

the eastern base of Mt Potosi, which is west

of Las Vegas. The hike quickly turned into

a rather steep climb in loose rock, desert

plants that wait to poke you or scratch you,

along with the early morning temperatures

climbing easily to the 100 degree mark.

There is no trail, only rugged terrain.

The three of us fanned out as we climbed

hoping to stumble into some of the visible

evidence that apparently is still scattered

about the Mountain side. (Continued Page 2

Carole Lombard Hike (Continued from page 1)

Our intentions are not to provide public in-

formation on the exact location. We agree with

some, that indicate this area should be protected

from those with intentions other than leavingthe area as it is found, a sacred area, and not

    removing objects found. Research indicates

there may still be human remains scattered

about since this was such a violent accident.

And also the fact it occurred in such rugged

    terrain.

For those that have never heard of Car

Lombard or dont remember, do some we

research. It is interesting, She was noted

her comedic roles in several classic films o

the 1930s. She was married to Clark Ga

Lombard made her first film debut at th

age of twelve. Later involved in numero

    films.

At the age of 33, Lombard had attende

World War II war bond rally. When retu

ing home via airplane, she was involved ithe tragic accident just outside Las Vegas

From what we found, it was never det

    mined what caused the crash.

Sadly other items of interest around the area

such a Native American Petroglyphs have been

damaged in recent times. Lost for the genera-

tions to come, by those that destroy, deface, or

    attempt to remove them.

So our next attempt will be done with more

in depth research, GPS, and during the cooler

months of fall. We hope to share more info,

images and such, but do not expect us to reveal

    the exact location

    Gun and Knife Show

We had many visitors at the TOPOGEAR

booth on June 12th and 13th, held in Las Ve-

gas, at Cashman field. The event was very busywith a large amount of traffic, lookers, buyers

and people just out to spend the day.

Vendor booths covered a wide variety of

items from guns, ammo and knives, to jewelry,

books, tools and jerky. TOPOGEAR had some

awesome bargains. You missed a great event if

you were unable to make it.

There are some deep holes in the creek that

looked interesting. I dont know much about

the fishing on Spring Creek, whether it is

stocked in this area or not.

The gate at the end of the road is shown on

the map, and if you are backpacking, you can

follow the road as it parallels the creek as you

follow the water, going down stream. This

section opens up, and there are more camp-

    sites.

I imagine the further you go from the gate,

the more privacy you will have. Later in the

spring and summer, as the brush starts to

grow, you might have to do some bushwhack-

ing to get to the creek and judging from the

tracks in the mud, there is a trail riding outfit

    that uses this area too.

On our outing it was rather secluded and

we enjoyed the privacy the woods offered.

This was car camping with larger tents, chairs,

a fire pit, and other creature comforts. Much

different than backpack camping where you

have to skimp on everything to control pack

    weight.

This past Memorial Day Weekend a TOPO-

GEAR group camped at the end of Forest Road

near Marienville, PA. The trek to this area is an

unimproved dirt road, a few potholes here and

there, but no problem for a 4x4 or truck.

You may be able to drive a regular car but

youd have to take it very slow. The road comes

to a dead end at a gate 2.5 miles from the main

road. There is an open area just before the gate.

Here you will find several camp sites under the

pines along the banks of Spring Creek. This is a

shady area, not much sun light gets in; nice inhot weather but otherwise cool and damp.

Activity: Backpacking Location: Havasupai Indian Reservation, AZ

Time on Trail: 11 hours (moving time) Difficulty: Difficult

    Distance: 24.65 miles (plus side trips)Elevation: +/- 2650 ft

    Trailhead

From the I-40 between Kingman and Flagstaff, take the Seligman exit and head north towards Peach Springs. Be sure to fuel up in Seligman. Pro

ceed 37 to the Indian Road 18 and turn right, continuing 64 miles to the trailhead parking lot.

    Highlights

Absolutely, the best hiking experience I have ever had! Waterfalls, steep canyons, caves, mules, d

    say waterfalls!

The Havasupai Indian Reservation is not part of the Grand Canyon National Park, but you canno

tell that from the scenery. From your very first step at the trailhead parking lot until your return a

the end of your trip, you will be swiveling your head side to side to take it all in.

The water is a turquoise blue/green and the perfect way to refresh the tired legs and back after the

mile trek down to the campground. If you are as lucky as we were, youll get a break from the sum

mer heat. The temps were about 20 degrees below normal the weekend we made this trip.

    Trail Description

The parking lot at the trailhead is stunning to say the least. It is perched more than 1000 feet abov

the valley floor and provides one of the best vistas of the trip.

The trail starts with a steep descent down the face of the box canyon to the valley floor by way of

series of switchbacks. If you have bum knees like I do from years of basketball, you will feel this d

scent! Be on the lookout for the approaching mules. They have the right-of-way, and wont stop

wait for you to move to the side.

Once you reach the valley floor, the trail bends to the north and follows the wash for 8 miles into t

Indian town of Supai. Along the way, the canyon walls draw closer and the surroundings becomemore grand. You get a sense for the true size of the canyon walls when then tower hundreds of fe

straight up as you make your way down the canyon.

There is more shade in this narrow section of trail. The sun doesnt have the angle to penetrate the canyon and it helps to keep temperatures

down. In this slot section ( which starts at about mile 7), you really need to watch for the mule packs. As they approach, move to the canyon wal

side and not the cliff side. The wrong move could be disastrous as these animals move through.

At the end of the slot section, it opens and the Havasu Creek comes in from the right side. As you cross the open expanse, following the trail as it

curves to the left, you will hear the water for the first time. It comes into view as you enter the heavier vegetation. The town of Supai is close. Yo

will follow the irrigation channel into Supai.

Dont expect Supai to look like a town. There isnt much, but the views are really cool. The sandstone spires off

your left, above the small ranch properties will tell you that you have arrived. The trail at this point is actually throads that connect the ranches. Make your way to the heli-pad and the town square. There is a restaurant on the

and the general store is on the right.

Stop by the general store to buy a post card to send home. It has to be mailed at the post office which is closed o

the weekends. If you plan to leave before Monday, find a trusting local and pay them to mail it for you. Thats w

we had to do. The Supai Post Office is the only one is the country that still moves the mail by mule. Its the only

way to get in or out of Supai with the exception of hiking it or going by helicopter.

    New Falls

Follow the trail through town as it leads past a few more ranch properties and begins the descent along the creek

the new falls (yet to be named). The new falls are just above the old Navajo Falls that were destroyed two years ago by the flood. The pool below

falls is deep enough for the crazies in each group to make the jump from the falls.

    Havasu Falls

Continue down the trail. About a 1/4 mile from the new falls is Havasu

Falls. Dont worry, you cant miss it! You will hear the roar of the water as

you approach and the falls will come into sight on your right side. The trail

lead you along the left side above the falls and descends to a shelf above the

pristine pool. Make a right and follow the short trail down to the pool or co

tinue on the main trail another 1/8 mile to the campground.

The CampgroundThe campground is long and relatively narrow and fills the flat area betweentwo canyon walls guarded by the Havasu Creek which splits as you enter the

campground. There are tons of great spots, some for a single tent and other

areas for a small group of tents. Its first come, first serve so try to get there

    early.

The Fern Spring is on the left as you make our way through the campground. The water is cold and refreshing and can be consumed without filte

ing. I filtered it the first day but took it straight from the pump the rest of the trip.

The campground also has port-o-potties at both ends but they are closed some times. Im

not sure what the schedule is, not sure if anyone does! It was closed on Friday but openrest of the weekend.

    MOONEY FALLS

As you reach far end of the campground, the trees thin out and the lower can-

yon comes into view. Its just a short walk to the first view of Mooney Falls

which are 196 feet tall and nearly twice as high as Niagara Falls. The falls are

massive and you can hear the water as it plummets over the falls, crashing intothe pool below.

Getting down to the falls can be a bit treacherous. The descent starts with a short section through a cav

then out the other side to the cliff side. There are chains that allow for an easier down climb and most

the way is a series of steps. It can be slippery when wet. The last 10 feet of the descent is down a ladde

which had a broken step when we were there. But once youre down the reward is breathtaking. Moon

Falls towers above the pool and sprays mist in all directions for hundreds of feet. You can walk out to-

wards the falls quite a way and the water stays about knee deep.

Heading downstream from Mooney Falls includes a series of small cascade falls and some deeper

pools. Be sure to look back upstream, there are some great pictures to take!

We turned around at this point. One of the members of our group sai

that the trail is covered like this for a good stretch as you continue to

make your way down to Beaver Falls. If you are following our GPX

track, you will turn around here and make your way back up to camp.

Trail NotesThis is a must do trip for anyone that likes the outdoors, likes to hike or backpack, or just wants to see some of the most brea thtaking views youll

    anywhere.

The hike down wasnt really that bad, though I was sick when we started which made for a long day. The hike out wasnt as bad as I thought eithe

The last section is brutal. Its a straight forward march up the side of the mountain! Mules are the danger on this trip. You have to look behind you

often and listen for the sounds of their approach. One of the guys in our group saw a hiker get leveled by a mule from behind. As the mule passed,

cooler strapped to his side clipped the hiker at the head level and knocked him out! He was listening to his iPod and didnt hear the mule coming.

You also have to be sure to move to the uphill side of the trail as they come through. Moving to the cliff side could be a recipe for disaster.

One last note: the Supai Post Office is the only one in the US that still moves the mail by mule. Stop at the general store and mail yourself one. I p

someone that was staying until Tuesday to mail my postcard for me on Monday. I got it in Las Vegas on Wednesday! It has a really cool meter sta

on it which makes for a great keepsake.

TOPOGEARs Test Version of the Winning July Recipe

We toned our version down to create a less spicy version. The judges are a bunch

of light weights when it comes to spicy or spicy hot preparations. We saw some of

the ingredients and didnt want a biased opinion. We also could not find Cajun

Spice and used a substitute we found locally, Emerils All Natural Bayou Blast.

This is also a 1/2 version of the original. This will easily serve 6 to 8 people. We

cooked this in a 10 inch X 4 inch deep Dutch Oven.

We used the 3 up, 3 down rule for heat found on page 4.

This version has a little spicy zing for us light weights. You can adjust that to your

taste by experimenting with several options we will note. We really enjoyed this

recipe, the flavor and variety of ingredients. Thank you Pat!

2 Links Mild Italian Sausage (You could use Hot or one of each depending on preference)

    2 Chicken Breasts (Boneless) cubed

1/2 lb Shrimp (deveined and tails removed)

    1 Small Vidalia Onion chopped

    1 Cup of rice (uncooked)

    14.5 oz Can Tomatoes chopped+liquid

1 red bell pepper chopped (You could use a hot pepper or half of each depending on preference)

2 tsp Emerils All Natural Bayou Blast

We omitted Franks Red Hot Sauce (You could add 1-2 shakes depending on preference)

    1/2 tsp salt

2 pinches ground black pepper (You could add more to taste)

2 14 oz cans of chicken broth

Same prep as original recipe. Remove sausage from casing and brown. Remove and set aside. Brown Chicken and set aside with the sausage.

Saut onions and peppers. Add the 2 browned meats back in (Hold the shrimp until later). Add the tomatoes, rice and spices. Add broth as

needed to avoid burning as the rice absorbs it. Coals top and bottom, check and stir several times for 1 hour. At the 40 minute cook time, add

shrimp and cook the remaining 10 minutes
