Aghada, partly Cork beg; situated on the south-eastern side of the harbour of Cork. The houses are small, well built, and have a

. cheerful appearance; a considerable fishery .is carried on here. The country around is .exceedingly fertile, and is embellished with several elegant mansions, the principal of which are Corkbeg house, the residence of R. U. P. Fitzgerald, esq., M.l'., D.L. , J.P.; Ballymonis, of General E. Roche, J.P.; Careystown, of Major-General Barter, c . B.;. Whitegate house, Hadwell lodge, Aghada hall,and Trabolgan. On the high ground near the mouth of Cork harbour is Carlisle fort­called after the fifth earl of Carlisle, lord lieutenant of Ireland in 1780-one of the strongest fortresses in the united kingdom. It is garrisoned by a battery of artillery and a detachment of infantry, and mili tia meet here for annual training. There was a large regular fortification with platform for gun batteries level with the water here, in Eliza· beth's reign, to protect the mouth of the harbour. It was garrisoned for J ames II., and taken by Churchill (Marlborough) on September 21st, 1690. National schools, post, money order and telegraph office, and constabulary barrack a t Whitegate; coast­guard stations at Poer head and Roches· point; fog signal station at Poer head; lighthouse at Rochespoin t.

and parish, barony Imokilly, east riding. This place derived its name, EO'chait/e, "a wooded place, " from its situation at the base of a range of hills, which at its erec­tion was a dense forest. The town is of very remote antiquity, having so early as the year 1209 received from King John a charter of incorporation, which is still preserved among the archives of Lismore castle. The once powerful Fitz.Geralds, earls of Desmond, whose power in the middle ages over· shadowed the whole of South Munster, held Youghal as one of their most important strongholds. In 1224 Maurice Fitz-Gerald (who afterwards took on him the habit of St . Francis) founded a Franciscan monastery on the south side of the town, which was the first religious foundation of the Order in---: Ireland. The building, originally intended for a castle, was completed in 1260 by his second son Thomas, whose son in 1268 founded a Dominican monastery, called the Friary of St. Mary of Thanks, on account of a miraculous image of the Virgin in the possession of the monks. At this time the town had attained some commercial eminence, for in 1267 the amount of customs paid was £103. In 1579 the Earl of Desmond on being proclaimed a traitor, plundered the town, and carried off the property of the inhabitants to his castles of Strancally and Lisfinny in county Water­ford, at that time occupied by the Spaniards. The Earl of Ormond hearing of this attack, sent a ship from Waterford with troops, who entered the town, but were overpowered by the forces of the seneschal of Imokilly; and most of them were killed, a few only escaped to their ships. The mayor had before this refused to receive an English garrison, promising to defend the place to the last extremity; but having made no effort for that purpose he was tried by courtmartial and hanged before his own house. The devastation to which the town was subjected during this rebellion com· pelled the inhabitants to abandon it; but on the retreat of the insurgents they were induced to return, and a garrison of 300 foot was left for their defence. In 1582 the seneschal of Imokilly, with all the forces he could muster, came suddenly to Youghal and scaled\the walls, but was repulsed with

, a loss of 50 men. In the war of 1641 the town agaih became an important military station an,tl was defended against the insur­gents by 1;he Earl of Cork at his own expense. In 1644 the native Irish were expelled from the town and their property seized. In 1645 the place was besieged by Lord Castlehaven. On the approach of Cromwell in 1649 the inhabitants embraced the cause nf parlia­ment, and that general made Youghal his

headquarters till the following spring. By letters patent under the privy seal, dated F ebruary 14th, 1660, their estates and fran­'chises were restored to the inhabitants who had been deprived of them by Cromwell. On August 2nd, 1690, V oughal surrendered to a few dragoons of King William's army; and on the 9th the governor with a small army defeated a large number of the Irish, and seized the castle for the king's use. In 1696 the inhabitants manned a boat with 40

'seamen and soldiers, and captured a French pri vateer which had put into the harbour to obtain supplies, and lay at anchor under Ca pel island . William IV., when Prince William Henry, visited Voughal, dined with the corporation, and was presented with the freedom of the borough. The town is plea­santly situated on the western shore of the harbour to which it gives name, and which is enclosed between two lofty eminences called Blackball head and Knockadoon, leaving a channel of about half a mile in breadth for the confluent streams of the T ourig and the Blackwater, which di scharge themselves into the bay. The Tourig is a boundary between Cork and Waterford for two miles, before it fall s into the Blackwater, and then makes a bold sweep to the east and south, forming in appearance a fine lake, environed by an amphi theatre of verdant and gently-sloping hills. Knockaverry, rising immediately over the town, is in many places well planted. The town has ex­tended itself in all directions, and is , much freq uented during the summer months for sea· bathing, for which it is well adapted, having a tine smooth and level strand ex­tending nearly three miles along the western shore of the bay. The houses are handsome and well built, though occasionally inter· mixed with a few of a more ancient date . There are fine drives, splendid scenery, cheap markets, salubrity of atmosphere, central si tuation, and excellent society, which not only makes Voughal a fashionable resort in the bathing season, but induces many persons to take up thei r permanent abode in the town. Vloollen manufactures at one time great ly flourished here; earthen· ware and bricks are produced to a consider­able ex tent; Sal dines are put up in two factories. The trade of the port is in· considerable. The salmon fishing on the Blackwater is extensive; there are but few_ boats engaged in the deep sea fisheries: The harbour is safe at .d commodious, but there is a bar across the entrance, extending about a mile to the south, on which are only Sft . at low water and J 3 at high or neap tides. Voughal being only a creek to Cork, most large vessels discharge at the latter port. The earliest charters to V oughal on record are those of King J ohn, 1209, the 49th of Ed ward II I. , and another of 2nd of Ed ward I V. A charter of the 2nd of Richard Ill. changed the ti tles of sovere ign and pro·

vosts to those of mayor and bailiffs, and incorporated the town by the name of "The mayor, bailiffs, burgesses, and com· monalty of the town of V oughal." The charter of the I 2th Henry VI!. granted the corporation a ferry at Voughal and a mease of herrings from every fishing boat. That of the 7th of James I. confirmed all the privileges in former grants. and granted a corporation of the staple as in Dublin. The local government is now vested in commis. sioners under the provisions of the 9th Geo. I V. , c. 82. Voughal sent two members to the Irish parliament up to the union, and sincereturned one to the Imperial parliament. Under the provisions of the Redistribution of Seats Bill, 1885, it now forms part of the East Cork electoral division, including the barony of Imokilly and part of Barrymore. Land, the surface is exceedingly undulating, and mostlyunder cultivation or planted; sub· stratulU clay·slate; soil light but produc­tive, with a very small portion of waste land, chiefly marsh and turbary. The surrounding scenery is varied, bold and interesting, and embellished with numerous gentlemen's seats and thriving plantations. Among these are Myrtlegrove, the residence of Sir Walter Raleigh, since whose death it has expe· rienced but little alteration. The demesne was remarkab!e for the luxuriant growth of myrtle, bay, the arbutus, and other exotics in the open air. On a hill above the town the potato brought by Sir Walter Raleigh from America was planted. Myrtleville is now the property of Governor Sir John Pope Hennessy. Adjoining Myrtleville is the collegiate church of St. Mary. The present church was erected in 1220 by Richard Ben· nett and Ellis Barry his wife. It was a religious foundation from a very early period; all the massive arches of the church are based on stone coffin lids of the 8th and 9th centuries. The architecture is chiefly in the early pointed style of the 13th century. The noble old edifice was re·edified in 1468 by Thomas, 8th earl of Desmond (who with his wi fe is buried here), with the proceeds of an indulgence from Pope Paul II., and was at the same time made collegiate. In 1608 it was in part restored by the Earl of Cork, and again quite recently through the exertions of a late rector, Rev. P. VY. Drew. In the south transept is a monument of the first, called the great, Earl of Cork, also of the founder, and many historical personages. In the churchyard are many curious ancient monuments. Portions of the DOlllinican friary st ill remain at the northern Pond of the town. On the town land of Seafield are traces of Kilcoran, or the Shanavine monas· tery, supposed to have been founded by St. Coran at the end of the 7th century. In the North Main st reet is Tynte's castle, erected in the reign of Elizabeth by a powerful fa mily of that name. A t the north·eastern ext remi ty of the parish are the remains of

the castle of Kilnatoora, a noble structure formerly belonging to the great Earl of Des· mond. On the hei\'ihts of Rhincrew (Rinn . em " fort of blood ') and in the vicinity, is a large assemblage of raths with subterra­neous chambers; also remains of a precep· tory of knights templars said to have been founded in 1183 by Raymond Ie Gros, a com· panion of Strongbow. Several of the ancient houses are stilI remaining in the town; some of them have the staircases in the walls, which are of extraordinary thickness; among them is said to be that of Coppinger the mayor, who was hanged before his own door, and also the one where Cromwell resided during his stay here. The earl of Cork and Orrery, among his inferior title, in the peerage of Ireland, enjoys that of Baron Boyle of Yougha!. Much of this property have passed by intenr.arriage to the Duke 'of Devonshire, and more by sale to the Pon· sonby family. Forms part of the Protestant and Catholic parishes of Y oughal, diocese of Cloyne.
