From the Editor’s DeskDr. B. Suresha

am extremely happy to present the first volume of news letter of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. We have a rich I

legacy, with stalwarts such as S. R. Aprameya, T. R. Seetharam, Yadupathi Gowda, to name a few, who laid strong foundation for the growth of the department.

We have been able to make good strides in academics in recent times, which is evident in the fact that eight PhD scholars and one M.Sc. Engg. (by Research) scholar have acquired their degrees from VTU in the last five years. We have added two M.Tech programs and presently 25 research students are working for Ph.D / M.Sc. Engg. (by Research) programs. Thanks to the vision of NIE management, we have ensured a steady growth in faculty strength and laboratory facilities. While the Technical Education Quality Improvement program (TEQIP) has given a big boost for faculty training and laboratory infrastructure, accreditation process of NBA has given fillip to high quality teaching and learning process.

This issue of news letter traces the major activities in the department during January-June, 2013. Indeed, we have been quite busy during these months in organizing various National and International events. Our students have shown that they are not only good in academics, but can also take up social causes. This was evident in the overwhelming response for the call given by Chamarajanagar district administration to help them in the recent assembly elections.

The editorial committee looks forward to your feedback, so that we can improve the news latter in the coming issues. Happy Reading.

It gives me an immense pleasure in bringing out this issue of our Departmental Newsletter (Jan -June 2103) under the leadership of our Principal Dr. G. L. Shekar.

I hope this newsletter will provide a brief report of all activities conducted by staff and students of Mechanical Engineering department during even semester 2013.

Department activities:Report on Indo-Canadian Symposium on Nano-Science and Technology ICSNST'13

he Department of Mechanical Engineering successfully organized the Indo-Canadian Symposium on Nano-Science Tand Technology ICSNT'13. This progrmame was hosted by

NIE and sponsored by TEQIP-II.

The primary objective of this symposium was to provide a platform for the participants from academia, research organizations and industry, who are actively involved in research on Nano-Science and Technology. Contributed research papers covered fundamental aspects of Nano-Science and Technology, which were based on application oriented research and development.

The response for the ICSNST'13 was overwhelming. In all, around 100 research papers were received for oral and poster presentation. Among them 24 research papers were accepted for oral presentation and eleven papers were selected for poster presentation. Thirty five faculty members from different science colleges across Karnataka, twenty five students from Post Graduate and Under Graduate courses from the National Institute of Engineering and 10 researchers from various other institutions also registered for the Symposium.

Mechanical Engineering Association (MEA)Mr. Ravikumar Beeranur took charge as the Faculty Coordinator for MEA in Febrauary, 2013. Under his guidance, MEA conducted the following events during Febraury-June, 2013:

lOne day workshop on “Design for Assembly” for M.Tech students by Prof. Achutha Rao of National Institute of Design (NID), Bangalore on 20.04.2013. About 50 students participated in the workshop.

lThe MEA Library has been strengthened by procuring 38 new text books which will be useful for UG, PG programs and competitive examinations.

Sports NEWS

lRajath Alva, student of 1st year has been selected for the State team of Kho-kho .

lGeorgelin S. K. & Akash S. H., students of 1st year have been selected for the NIE Cricket team

lAnil Ram Adya & Mahan Poovaiah student of 2nd year have played in State level events in Hockey.

Students Involved in Assembly Election Duty:

As per the request of the Deputy Commissioner of Chamarajanagar, 45 students from the department of Mechanical Engineering participated as micro observers in the legislative assembly election which was held on 5th May, 2013. Students recorded the polling process from 7am to 5pm from their own laptop. Recorded information were wrote in a DVD and handed over to the preceding officer. We are very proud about our students that they have taken up the opportunity and completed efficiently.

NIE has entered into a co-operative agreement with Oel Werme Institut (OWI) affiliated to Aachen Technological University, Germany. As part of the co-operation, OWI is offering 8 week internship program titled 'INTERN-2013', for pre-final year students of Mechanical / Industrial Production & Engineering of NIE during July-August, 2013. The students will be working on live projects under the supervision of one of the scientists of OWI. The following students of VI sem have been selected for the internship

th thprogram from 25 June to 18 August, 2013.

INTERN - 2013CNC Training Centre

or the past seven years, the NIE CNC Training centre has been a steady source of knowledge and experience for the students of Mechanical and I&P Engineering. The F

Centre conducts short term training programmes for final & pre-final year students of the Mechanical Engineering Division. This is one of the few centres in Karnataka to offer training on actual factory ready machines. The course is open not only to the students of NIE, but also students of other engineering colleges and technical staff of various industries in the region.

The course imparts hands-on training on programming and operation of CNC Lathe and CNC Machining centre. The programme is a mix of theory and practical classes over a period of 4 weeks. The unique feature of the centre is that a few previously trained students will be instructing the trainees on the operation of CNC machines. The trainers themselves are very well trained and are involved in the running and maintenance of the machines & the centre itself.

Thanks to the hard work, dedication and enthusiasm of the trainers, over the last six months there have been four batches of about 100 students trained at the centre. The trainees included students from GCE, K.R. Pet and staff from the Rare Metals Project (RMP – BARC). The trainers and the trainees find the course to be an enriching experience and a crucial part of their education in being Mechanical & Production Engineers.

The Centre was established in September of 2006 under TEQIP - I grants. The centre was set up by Dr.N.V.Raghavendra, through the guidance of Dr. B. K. Sridhara & Dr. T. N. Shridhar. So far there have been 20 batches of students trained at the Centre.

Industrial visits was organized for students. Second semester students of M.Tech (PDM) visited VISL, Bhadrawathi on 8th June, 2013

Short-term training programs are being conducted on CATIA and HYPERMESH for the UG/PG students, to strengthen the students' capability in CAD/CAM. The programs are being conducted in association with M/s Swamy Design Solutions, Bangalore.

Software Courses:

2nd year Mechanical Engineering UG students have visited Sharavathi Power Plant, Shimoga, Mysore Paper Mills, VISL-SAIL, Bhadravathi on 25th & 26th May, 2013.
