Definition

ITS

«ITS integrate telecommunications, electronics and information technologies with transport engineering in order to plan, design, operate, maintain and manage transport systems.

This integration aims to improve safety, security, quality and efficiency of the transport systems for passengers and freight, optimising the use of natural resources and respecting the environment.

To achieve such aims, ITS require procedures, systems and devices to allow the collection, communication, analysis and distribution of information and data among moving subjects, the transport infrastructure andinformation technology applications."

Specification about related terms: as far as ITS deal with information technologies and mobility of people, may also be defined as “Infomobility”; it may involve road transport or any other mode as well as their interactions.»

[ITS-EduNet, 2009]

TRAFFIC MONITORING AND CONTROL

+

Big

logistic

problem=

Development of infrastructures is limited(cost for building and maintenance,

space saturation, period for completion)

Increase urbanisation of the world

Black-oil dependence

New roads imply higher public expense also for maintenance

Manage the increase of the amount of traffic or improving quality of service.

Reduce congestion and accidents: how, investing in innovation on existing

infrastructures?

Intense mobility request

a new road

Scenario

TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT

Better resource

exploitation=

By utilising solutions coming from the

ICT field, we can inform people about

congestions, alter them, suggest

alternative directions, charging

possibilities and means, manage

limited resources better, allocating

them dynamically. Being a complex

problem, there are sometimes no right

or wrong solutions, but only tailored

good or suitable solutions.

Fields of intervention

ITS

To increase the quality of mobility by providing information,

allowing the choice of efficient routes for drivers or public

transport users:

Information to personal devices or to vehicle devices

Information through DSRC and VMS

Transmit the travel information to

the Internet, mobile, phone, radio, tv and/or another vehicle.

DSRC may send information when

vehicles are passing by a roadside

antenna. VMS (variable message

signs) provide useful information. IVC makes it more continuous.

Traveller information

Information through kiosks

Kiosks placed in stations provide

information about public transport to users.

Fields of intervention

ITS

To improve real-time traffic management, data analysis and

route planning through real-time traffic information (routes,

congestions, restriction, parking availability and incidents):

Preparation for management: traffic surveillance

Traffic control & traffic regulation enforcement

Incident management and collision avoidance

On-site data collection by road-side

unit (information acquired at a fixed

point) and mobile or probe car

(information acquired using mobile and specially equipped vehicles).

VMS (variable message sign) for

conveying real-time information

on congestion, restriction and parking availability.

A C.A:S.is a system of sensors that

is placed within a car to warn its

driver of any dangers that may lie

ahead on the road. In extreme conditions it can intervene.

Traffic information

Fields of intervention

ITS

To manage urban areas, leading to less congestion and less

environmental impact, and to the increase of safety and

certainty of travel:

Public transportation Reducing demand by charging Electronic financial transactions

Provides information on public

transport and parking spaces at stations.

Pricing using electronic transactions to reduce demand.

Improved gate throughput by

allowing easier and faster toll

payments. The system works for

collecting fees either for entry (or exit) roads as mileage-based fee collection with GPS or tachograph.

Demand management

To improve the quality of public services and to increase the

efficiency in logistics and in security.

Bus location and bus signal priority

Cargo/vehicle tracking Monitoring/operating recordings

Bus location conveys the location of

public transports to the users. Bus

signal priority is a system in which

traffic signals adapt their phase to give priority to buses.

Monitors truck location and cargo to enhance logistics operations,

increasing efficiency for each trip and the overall delivery system.

Monitors and records operation

data. Leads to better driver and

vehicle management, increase in

security and better compliance with regulations and standards.

Public transport & commercial vehicle management

Fields of intervention

ITS

Wicked problem

Transportation issues

Transportation planning is a wicked problem, therefore:

1.You don’t understand the problem until you have developed a solution;

2.Solutions are not right or wrong, rather only better or worse;

It means that Transportation problem can be resolved only by a taylorapproach based on flexibility and care for details. The previous cases can teach very few.

Solution

Analyse data

3. Every problem is essentially unique and novel, so you cannot copy another city’s or country’s solution;

4. Every solution is a ‘one-shot operation’,

so you will not be able to reuse your own solution.

The proposal

ITS offering

Think Up can provide tailored solutions

combining the right mix of strategic approach and disruptive

technologies.

Think Up does not need to sell a unique technology

(as big players need), but it can build a structured framework

that can fit to client’s needs.

Think Up can suggest the best systemic solution.

Think Up provides a “Solution Manager” to manage all resources

and to represent the “single point of contact” for Customers.
