Dunia Melayu Dunia Islam (DMDI)

Dunia Melayu Dunia Islam, The Malay and Islamic World, (DMDI) is led by President, YB Senator Tan Sri Dr Hj Mohd Ali bin Hj Mohd Rustam. YB Senator Tan Sri Dr Hj Mohd Ali bin Hj Mohd Rustam is also the President of Persekutuan Silat Kebangsaan Malaysia (PESAKA). There are several countries that DMDI have established itself in, including:

As part of the DMDI expansion program, DMDI did a launching of DMDI Canada on 9th April 2016. Singapore Silat Federation (SSF) was invited to collaborate with the team from DMDI, in conjunction with the Silat towards Olympic mission.

Setting up Pencak Silat Federation in Canada

Pencak Silat was once introduced to Canada many years ago. However, Canada has only made one appearance during a World Pencak Silat Championship where no athletes were sent to compete.

Since then, the federation that was built went silent and is uncontactable. As Dunia Melayu Dunia Islam (DMDI) was launching in Canada, the President of Jamiyah Singapore, Dr Mohd Hasbi Abu Bakar, has invited the Singapore Silat Federation to collaborate in the launching of DMDI and establish Pencak Silat in Canada.

Singapore Silat Federation (SSF) will be working with DMDI under the missions Exploring opportunities for stability and social activities. SSF will be actively taking part in DMDI events while promoting Silat towards Olympics mission.

Dr Mohd Hasbi Abu Bakar is a resident of Canada. Despite being the president of Jamiyah Singapore, his family member have been residing in Canada for the past decade.

Dr Mohd Hasbi Abu Bakar manage to secure a few performances and meetings with the people in Toronto, Canada:

Introduction and Pencak Silat Performance at University of Toronto

The University of Toronto has gathered a group of students via the Malaysian Students Association of University of Toronto (MASAT) to attend the Pencak Silat Performance by Sheik Ferdous and Nur Fazlin.

The students were taught more on Pencak Silat and a few joined in the try out session as well.

Introduction and Pencak Silat Performance at Sayeda Khadija Centre

Sayeda Khadija Centre is a mosque frequented by Malay Community living in Toronto, Canada. The malay community in Toronto, Canada comes from emigrants originally from Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei and Sri Lanka.

Sayedah Khadija Centre hosts events for the Malay Community, and as part of the DMDI event, Singapore Silat Federation was invited to do a short demonstration on Pencak Silat.

Apart from the Pencak Silat Performance, the Singapore Silat Federation sat in the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with DMDI Canada. Singapore Silat Federation and DMDI Canada has agreed on starting Pencak Silat classes in Canada.

Introduction and Pencak Silat Training and Performance with Sri Lanka Malay

Singapore Silat Federation has put in the initiative to get new athletes to practice Pencak Silat and come out with a simple demonstration on the launching of DMDI Canada. The Sri Lanka Malay community has gathered a group of 8 students to take up the challenge.

Within 3 hours of training session, Sheik Ferdous and Nur Fazlin manage to get the students interested and get ready for the performance.

Introduction and Pencak Silat Performance at ISNA High School

Professor Dawood Zwink of ISNA High School has expressed their interest in establishing Pencak Silat as an extra curriculum sport in the school. Professor Dawood Zwink has offered to introduce Pencak Silat to the Muslim Youth of North America (MYNA), Muslim Sports Association of Canada (MSA) and Islamic Schools across the nation. Singapore Silat Federation will be writing in a full proposal to MYNA, MSA and other Islamic Schools in Canada.

Introduction and Pencak Silat Performance at Zirger Academy Martial Arts

At Zirger Academy Martial Arts, led by Mr Sean Zirger, they practice a variety form of Martial Arts like Jeet Kune Do, Grapplling, Kali and Mixed Martial Arts. Singapore Silat Federation took the opportunity, and with the help of Dr Mohd Hasbi Abu Bakar, we manage to secure a meeting with Mr Sean Zirger himself.

Mr Sheik Alau’ddin Yacoob Marican, PBM, started introducing the art of Pencak Silat verbally and Mr Sean Zirger showed eagerness to take up the sport. Sheik Ferdous and Nur Fazlin showed a few different sets of artistic movements and dropping techniques.

The meeting was a success and Mr Sean Zirger is interested to include Pencak Silat as one of the arts in his Academy.

Planning to Move Forward

Singapore Silat Federation will conduct classes for coaches prior to starting the training sessions in Toronto, Canada. We will be providing the following benefits:

1 Male Instructor

1 Female Instructor

2 Administrative Officials – Conduct Theory Session as well

Training Equipment

The coaches from SSF will be staying in Toronto, Canada for a period of 2 to 3 weeks to prepare the trainee coaches for subsequent training sessions. The trainee coaches will have to go through a series of test which will include the following:

Basic Pencak Silat Technics

Polah Langkah

Punch / Kick

Sweep / Scissors

Class Application

After completing of the coaching class, they will proceed back to their own centres to start off with the normal training sessions.

Canada will register itself to the International Pencak Silat Federation (PERSILAT). It will run under the supervision of Chairman of DMDI Canada, Mr Fadhlur Rahman Akbar. Mr Fadhlur and his team will work on establishing Pencak Silat at various cities like Mississauga, Scarborough and Waterloo.

Places to Conduct Pencak Silat in Toronto

As discussed with the representatives from Canada, this is the list places that will take up Pencak Silat as a sport.

Conclusion

The Singapore Silat Federation would like to thank Dr Mohd Hasbi Abu Bakar for approaching and inviting us to introduce Pencak Silat in Toronto, Canada.

We would also like to thank Imam Dr Hamid Slimi of Sayeda Khadija Centre, Professor Dawook Zwink of ISNA High School and Mr Sean Zirger of Zirger Academy Martial Arts for accepting the art of Pencak Silat.
