Find Yourself HereWe embraced a record number of new philanthropists this year bringing our total number of Funds to 547. This means that a growing collection of families, individuals, and organizations are realizing the opportunities that joining Toronto Foundation can bring.

Two of our new Fundholders, Bob and Leo, friends and cottage neighbours on Thunder Beach, established the Thunder Foundation. They came to us to access what we know about the charitable sector in Toronto in order to deepen their grantmaking. We introduced them to the leaders of four high-impact organizations —that had difficulty getting funding —so that they could gather first-hand knowledge and in so doing narrow down their priorities. Equipped with new insights and relationships, the pair selected one charity to support with a focused, multi-year donation.

We also welcomed the Lifeline Syria Fund, a major contributor to

supporting Syrian refugees settling in the GTA. In this case, our role is primarily administrative, providing back-office services to manage the effective flow of funds for this important fundraising initiative.

Each Fund that comes to us has its own reason to choose Toronto Foundation. But they all share a common interest: the desire to have an impact. Increasingly, we are seeing that this means so much more than just writing a cheque. Many are involved in starting up projects, devising solutions to issues and opportunities that are bubbling up. They are building knowledge and relationships to fuel and deepen their charitable giving. And they are coming together with other like-minded city builders to amplify their impact.

We believe this is a powerful development for our city and we are committed to growing it.

As the name of this year’s Annual Report suggests, Toronto Foundation is a place where people like you can realize your aspirations for a better future and play an active part in it too. Philanthropy in Toronto today has many faces and takes on many shapes. Along with a financial and programmatic summary of our own work, in this Report we share with you just some of the inspiring people who are behind the Funds we steward.

In addition to our Fundholders, the Foundation partners with many other organizations and individuals – from professional advisors to community organizations and corporate citizens too.

Thank you all for your confidence in us. Most of all, thank you for helping to make Toronto the best place to live, work, learn, and grow through the power of giving.

When Ratna Omidvar and Mohammad Al Zaibak needed a partner to manage the funds they were raising for refugee settlement, they came to us. When Michael Barford was looking for a way to deepen the impact of his grantmaking, we connected them.

Endowed Funds include donations designated by the donor to be held permanently or for a period of at least ten years and donations endowed by the Board of Directors when there is no current intention of making the original donation available for granting. The Board establishes the annual amount to be made available for granting, ensuring compliance with Canada Revenue Agency requirements. Flowthrough Funds include both Invested Flowthrough Funds and Flowthrough Funds which are not subject to granting restrictions.

The total number of Funds at Toronto Foundation has grown 25% over the past five years, to 547 in 2015-16. Toronto Foundation’s Funds consist of the following types: 414 Endowed Funds (permanent/long-term), 18 Invested Flowthrough Funds (medium- to long-term), 93 Flowthrough Funds (short-term), 22 Funds held on behalf of other registered charities and government bodies (having an offsetting liability), and the Operating Fund. Endowed and Invested Flowthrough Funds as well as Funds held on behalf of other parties are invested in pooled funds managed by third party investment management firms. Flowthrough Funds are invested in short-term investments. Included in Endowed Funds are 37 Vital Toronto Funds named in honour of individuals or corporations who have permanently endowed $25,000 or more, with annual grants directed to initiatives and programs that support the Foundation’s mission and vision in Toronto.

The Foundation’s assets under administration total $408M at March 31, 2016, including the Toronto 2015 Sport Legacy Fund ($69M) and United Way of Toronto and York Region funds ($90M). This represents growth of $151M or 59% over a five year period, generated by the opening of new Funds, additions to existing Funds, and net investment income.

For Barb and Peter Halsall, the excitement of philanthropy is helping get a project off the ground that tackles an issue in a fresh way.

Youth Empowering Parents (YEP), led by Agazi Afewerki, does just that. Inspired by a Vital Ideas grant, the Halsalls stepped in with a multi-year gift of money and time. With this support, YEP is turning the mentoring model on its head, linking youth mentors with immigrant adults to transfer literacy and computer skills.

TORONTO 2015 Games Legacies2015 was a big year in Toronto as we hosted the TO2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. Toronto Foundation was pleased to partner with a number of initiatives and organizations to support the sustainable social and physical legacies the Games brought to Toronto.

Playing for Keeps In partnership with the Playing for Keeps Collaborative

Playing for Keeps (P4K) builds social capital — trust and the sense of belonging — through volunteerism and play to create healthier, more active, and better connected communities. At the heart of it are Neighbourhood Games, playful and simple community events run by residents to bring their communities together.P4K makes three kinds of community grants to bring the program to life:

• P4K Champion grants to partner organizations to support recruitment and stewardship of volunteer Community Leaders

• Try-A-Sport Neighbourhood Games grants to support events that introduce Torontonians to new sports • Micro-grants to help Torontonians host P4K Neighbourhood Games in their own communities

In 2015-16 P4K made Community Grants of $73,150. Total Community Grants since 2011: $318,000.

Pan Am PathExtending more than 80km across Toronto, the Pan Am Path brings residents, community organizations, businesses, and artists together to connect Torontonians to their city and each other. The multi-use path connects Toronto’s trails, ravines, and neighbourhoods to create an active, living public space.

As the Path’s Legacy Partner, Toronto Foundation has committed $1 Million to the collaborative development of a 10-year sustainability plan to ensure the Path’s vitality for years to come.

Total granted to Pan Am Path by Toronto Foundation and Fundholders since 2014: $198,000

My uncle Norman spent his career as a school teacher and truly understood how valuable it is to provide young people with strong support. Giving to organizations that provide that support when it is needed most is a legacy I am proud to continue on his behalf.

Positive male role models can make all the difference in a young man’s life. With this in mind, a group of professional black men, including Marlon Reid, Ainsworth Morgan, Gavin Douglas, and Justice Donald McLeod launched the 100 Strong Foundation.

The Goal? To promote self-empowerment and success within the black community and, ultimately, unite young men with supportive mentors.

Our family is made up of two adults, two kids, two dogs, one cat, two guinea pigs, and one hamster and we wouldn’t have it any other way. One of our dogs and our cat are rescue animals. It is important to us and our daughters to support organizations like the Toronto Humane Society and Speaking of Dogs that help other pets in need find the perfect home.

The Foundation’s Investment Committee monitors the performance of its third party investment management firms against the overall investment strategy and their specific objectives.

The Foundation has an objective of generating stable returns over rolling 5-year periods. Under its investment policy, the Foundation targets a real average annual investment return of 5% (or 5% plus inflation), rather than following a more traditional market benchmark. This absolute return target is designed to meet the granting needs of the Fundholders and the Foundation’s administrative requirements, as well as maintain the value of the capital, all within acceptable risk parameters.

Pooled fund investments returned an average 0.2% for the one year ended March 31, 2016 and an annualized five year return of 8.5%.

The Foundation staff (19) manages the elements of our model of philanthropy: Donor Relations, Community Knowledge, and City Building. We connect many of our individual, family, and corporate Fundholders with organizations working on solutions to issues highlighted in our annual Toronto’s Vital Signs Report. High-impact organizations receive grants from our strategic grant streams and are featured on our on-line Community Knowledge Centre.

In addition, our unique position as a catalyst for change enables us to mobilize philanthropic, private, and public sectors and collaborate on initiatives to tackle community challenges in innovative and inspiring ways.

We also facilitate granting across Canada and steward assets under administration of more than $400 million. Total operating fund expenses, including investment management fees, for fiscal 2015-16 were $4.4M.

Martin Ship and Don Kinder began their relationship with the Foundation as members of the Legacy Society, committing a portion of their estate.

They soon realized that their legacy could be built during their lifetimes too.

So together, they have established a Donor Advised Fund to help shape the city they know and love.
