Quiz #2♠ A J 7 6♥ 3 2♦ A Q 7 6♣ K 9 4

♠ K Q 10 9 8 5♥ K J♦ K♣ 6 5 3 2

You are in 4♠ . West leads the ♦J. Describe yourline of play. Thanks to Eddie Kantar for the problem.

Solution to Quiz #1♠ A 4♥ Q 10 6♦ 10 5 4 3♣ A 9 6 3

♠ 10 8 6 3 2 ♠ K J 7♥ 8 7 4 ♥ A 5 3 2♦ 9 6 ♦ Q J 8 2♣ 7 5 2 ♣ K 4

♠ Q 9 5♥ K J 9♦ A K 7♣ Q J 10 8

South plays 3NT after opening a strong 1NT. Westleads the ♠3. Here is what Bobby Wolff in the Aces onBridge syndicated column had to say about the deal.

Every beginner is familiar with the maxim “thirdhand high.” It is one of the earliest teachings he com-mits to memory. What about exceptions to the rule? These are not usually covered in the classroom; onemust rely on individual on-the-spot analysis. Usually,a bit of simple arithmetic will point the way.

East begins his analysis before he see’s West’sopening lead. He has heard South’s opening of 1NTand North’s raise to game. What does a look at hisown 14 high-card points tell him? With only a 40-pointdeck, it tells him that West must have a nearyarborough.

When West leads a fourth-best spade, East’s pre-liminary analysis prepares him for an alert play. In-stead of playing a routine third-hand high, East insertshis jack (a long study might give the show away).

Fearing the king is with West’s long suit, Southwill surely take his queen. When South knocks outEast’s ♥A, East springs a surprise by returning the ♠Kto dummy’s ace. South’s last chance lies with a suc-cessful club finesse, and when it fails East defeats thegame, leading his ♠7 to West’s 10.

Note that the routine play of the ♠K at trick onegives South an easy game. With West’s spades neu-tralized, South can safely win three club tricks and twotricks in each of the other suits.

Quiz #1 winners: Jacob Morgan, Cynthia Colin,James Luxford, Jackie Tatting and Gur Baykal. Pleasepick up your prizes in the Daily Bulletin office – RoyalYork Hotel, mezzanine level, Algonquin Room.

Goodwill Commitee Chairman Aileen Osofsky congratulates the three new members of the ACBL JuniorCorps, left to right: John Kranyak, Paul Bethe and Jason Feldman.

Three young players were added to the ACBL Jun-ior Corps Saturday at a reception honoring theorganization’s Junior players.

New Junior Corps members are Paul Bethe of Jer-sey City NJ, Jason Feldman of Champaign IL and JohnKranyak of Bay Village OH. They were presented byAileen Osofsky, chairman of the ceremonies honoringthe Juniors.

The Junior Corps was established by Bobby Wolffin 1991 to honor Junior players who promote the gameof bridge and present a proper image for bridge.

Also at the Junior reception:• Alex Phillips of Little Rock AR was announced

as the winner of the Homer Shoop Pre-Teen Scholar-ship for $5000.

• Shawn Quinn announced that on Junior Day atthe 2002 Spring NABC in Houston, there will be aregional pair event for Juniors. The winning playerswill each receive a $5000 scholarship.

Junior Corps adds three members• Jade Barrett made his annual donation to the Jun-

ior Fund, presenting a check to Charlotte Blaiss, whocoordinates Junior programs for the ACBL.

• Blaiss announced that there will be a Junior bridgecamp July 29 to Aug. 5 in 2002, right after the Sum-mer NABC in Washington DC.

• Jonathan Steinberg, who represents District 2 onthe ACBL Board of Directors, announced that theACBL Educational Foundation will subsidize eachNorth American Junior participating in the JuniorBridge Camp. The $200 subsidy will make the cost ofthe camp about $225 per Junior.

• College teams were introduced and college Jun-iors will encouraged to enter the event in 2002. Thefinalists will win a trip to the 2002 Summer NABC inWashington DC. Dates for the qualifying event will beannounced in September.

A further note on Junior matters: Canada’s ErinAnderson is the 2001 ACBL Queen of Bridge.

Go low, score highOn this deal from the first qualifying session of

the Life Master Pairs, what appeared to be an error byDavid Berkowitz turned into a 14-point play. Theiropponents, who reported the deal, were ColinHarrington of Cambridge ON and John Moser of St.Agatha ON.

Cohen led the ♣7 and Berkowitz slipped in the 4.A surprised Harrington won the jack and, recognizingthat he needed to ruff only one club instead of two, immediately played on trumps. Harrington made thestandard play of the ace followed by a low spade to thejack, losing to the doubleton queen. Harrington stillhad to lose the ♦A, so he chalked up plus 450.

The way Harrington figures it, if Berkowitz hadput in the ♣ Q, it would have been necessary forHarrington to ruff two clubs in dummy, leaving himwith a doubleton K-J before trumps were touched. Inthat case, he most likely would have played the ♠Kfirst, followed by the jack, picking up the doubletonqueen. Twelve tricks from that point, of course, wouldhave been trivial.

But, nooooo. Berkowitz gave declarer his losingoption, earning the perennial pairs contenders 20.5matchpoints out of 38 instead of the 6.5 they wouldhave had for minus 480.

Harrington recalls that when the deal was over,Berkowitz apologized to Cohen. “I guess I was asleep,”Berkowitz said.

Said Cohen: “That was kind of a Rueful Rabbitplay.”

Whatever you call it, the play helped Berkowitzand Cohen to a 69% game.

We have a short message for players who wish toplay certain Mid-Chart methods: there are no moreyellow books.

What does this mean? In case you don’t know aboutthe yellow book, it was the publication that containedthe defenses to Mid-Chart methods such as the Multi2♦ . Players could pick up yellow books and carry themaround for the benefit of their opponents.

Repeat: there are no more yellow books.Instead, a player who wishes to use certain Mid-

Chart methods must go to the ACBL web site on theInternet (www.acbl.org) and check the Mid-Chart sec-tion under “Conventions” to determine if the methodis permitted. If it is, the player is obliged to print outthe defense to the method and take it with him to thetable.

Players who do not do this will not be permit-ted to play Mid-Chart methods that are covered bythis regulation. Mid-Chart methods marked with anasterisk do not require written defenses.

At this tournament, there is a limited supply ofprintouts from the ACBL web site, but it is the respon-sibility of the players to determine whether their meth-ods require these procedures and to take appropriateaction when required.

Charity foundations representing the Canadian BridgeFederation and the ACBL presented checks totaling$10,000 (U.S.) to the Daily Bread Food Bank, whichserves 140,000 people a year in metropolitan Toronto.

Ray Lee, president of the Canadian Bridge Fed-eration, and Jayne Thomas, president of the ACBLCharity Foundation, presented a check for $5000 toJim Martin of the food bank just before the openingsession of the Life Master Pairs Saturday. Momentslater, Lee and Marilyn White, charity chair of the Ca-nadian Bridge Federation Charitable Foundation, pre-sented a check for the same amount to Martin.

The mission of the Daily Bread Food Bank is tofeed hungry people and to eliminate the need for foodbanks. Since 1983, this second-largest food bank inCanada has been providing food to people in need inthe Greater Toronto Area. Fresh and non-perishablefood from both the public and industry are collected

$10,000 in grants to Daily Breadand centralized at the Daily Bread warehouse. Fromthere it is sorted and distributed to 170 member agen-cies across the metropolitan area.

The member agencies host food programs that in-clude neighborhood food banks, children’s breakfastprograms, hostels, hot meal programs, drop-in centers, and food-sharing projects. 140,000 people use emer-gency food programs every month in Toronto. Of thoseserved by Daily Bread, 38% are children, 43% are dis-abled and about 10% are seniors.

In addition to providing food for member agen-cies and operating an on-site food program, DailyBread provides other services, such as the advocacyand referral program. This program assists people inovercoming the circumstances that bring them to thefood bank in the first place. This might include help-ing people with income or housing security or jobsearches.

They had a ball attheir 1st duplicate

Etelke Wice and Phyllis Ames of Torontoheard good things about the game for beginnersthat was going to take place at the Royal York.Neither had ever heard of duplicate, but a friendgave them a flyer telling about the special gamecalled Bridge+. They noticed that Audrey Grantwas going to be there, and that convinced themto give it a try. They had heard a lot about AudreyGrant from their bridge teacher, Marilyn Unger, and they knew that Grant had authored the booksthey were studying.

The Bridge+ program yesterday proved to beeverything they hoped for -- and much more.“Audrey talked about conventions, duplicate,Stayman, opening leads -- she covered so much,”said Wice.

“She gave us three hands and showed us howto play them,” said Ames. “She told us that ma-jors are better than minors. And she told us aboveall to keep it simple.”

Both Wice and Ames bought copies ofGrant’s new book, “Commonly Used Conven-tions,” and quickly took them to Grant for her toautograph. “Audrey makes you feel as if you’rethe most important person in the world when shetalks to you,” said Ames.

“It was wonderful,” said Wice. “We’re goingto try duplicate again.”

A lot of other people apparently feel the sameway. Yesterday's game drew about 30 tables.

Most of the East-West field bid to 4♠ by West. Onthe ♥10 opening lead East-West generally recordedplus 450 for an average minus.

Consider the spade suit. If the suit breaks 2-1, youcan do what you like. If they are 3-0 offside, there’snothing you can do to avoid a loser. But 3-0 onside is adifferent matter. Win the ♥A and lead the ♠J – and testSouth’s mettle! If he follows low, go up with the ace –and congratulate him afterwards. If he covers, you havethe entries to repeat the spade finesse – and it will beup to him to congratulate you! There was half a topdifference between plus 450 and plus 480.

Ralph Buchalter made a fine play on Board 4 torake in a bushel of matchpoints.

Like virtually everyone else, he opened 1NT andbought it there on the ♥9 lead. He won and clearedspades, then won the third heart to cash the spades,South pitching the ♦8-7 perforce. Instead of setting upclubs by guessing the suit, he played the ♦K! Southwon and could cash a heart, but then had to lead a clubbefore or after cashing the ♦Q. Buchalter had comedown to the ♦9-5 and the ♣A-9 in dummy. All thedefense could take was their ♦Q. Plus 120 was worthjust about all the matchpoints for Buchalter.

An unsolvable problem?Peter Boyd gave Linda Spangler of Dallas a

problem on this deal from the first semifinal ses-sion of the Life Master Pairs. The problem ap-proached unsolvable – every clue pointed to thesolution she tried. The hand was brought to us byher partner, Charles Richards of Dallas, who feltBoyd’s feat should be noted.

3NT All PassSteve Robinson, with two possible entries, led

his fourth best spade. Spangler played low fromdummy, and Boyd produced – the 5! Spangler ofcourse realized her only possible entry for theblocked clubs was the ♠Q. She could have won thetrick with dummy’s 6, of course, but that would havekilled the dummy entry. So she took her only chance– she won the trick with her ace. She thought the♠K was with South because of the opening lead andbecause of Boyd’s play. So she cashed her clubs andled a spade, rising with the queen when Robinsonplayed low. But now Boyd produced the king, anddeclarer was forever cut off from dummy. Boyd re-turned a heart, ducked to the king, but Spangler stillhad six tricks coming -- two hearts, two spades andtwo clubs. Setting 3NT three tricks was worth 24 ofthe 25 possible matchpoints.

It was a successful venture for the retired civilengineer. His District 20 team led from start to fin-ish in winning what is now the second flight of theGNT. They defeated a District 6 squad, 164-129.

They defeated LylePoe, Columbia MD; Raphael Kahn, Washington DC;Rusty Krauss, Vienna VA; Barry Falgout, RockvilleMD; David Butler, Keswick VA, and Mark Dahl, Rich-mond VA.
