TORQUE TOOLS A torque wrench is a precision instrument used to apply or predetermine tension on bolts, nuts, lugs, and fasteners for assembled parts. CALIBRATION DESCRIPTIONTo ensure correct precision in torque wrenches a testing device is used. A force is applied on the torque wrench. When 75% of the desired torque is reached, torque speed must not exceed two angle degrees per second. The torque wrench must be tested three times at three points in its scale; at its lower point (at 20% of maximum capacity), at its intermediate point and at its highest point (maximum torque capacity). The testing device must have a measurement accuracy of ± 1%.

URREA Professional Tools certifies the calibration of its torque wrenches based on the norms mentioned above, using calibrated measurement equipment that is approved by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the United States.

Calibration of a torque wrench must be performed at an authorized location and by qualified personnel.The following table is a guide for calibration frequency.

It must also be calibrated each time its maximum torque is exceeded or if it is stricken.

URREA manufactures its tools following technical standards.URREA torque wrenches are calibrated and have been certified to attain the required precision and meet international standards.

A product technical standard is a document specifying design and manufacturing guidelines to ensure adequate product performance under conditions that meet users’ requirements. These standards are issued by private or governmental bodies and associations.

The only body issuing international standards is known as ISO (International

Organization for Standardization). It issues the ISO 9000 series, related to quality systems, although it also issues product technical standards. In the United States there are various associations that issue or used to issue standards, such as GSA/US FEDERAL, ASME, ANSI and SAE.

The hand tool standards known as Federal are no longer updated and are being absorbed by ASME. The same is happening to standards issued by ANSI.

Nowadays, ASME standards related to hand tools are initially reviewed by committees formed by different tool manufacturers, users, and distributors so they can be approved and issued by ASME.

FORMULA TO CALCULATE TORQUE WHEN AN ADAPTER IS ADDED TO THE TORQUE WRENCHThere are times when it is necessary to use an adapter or extension on the torque wrench. When this happens it is necessary to recalculate the predetermined torque because the total length (from the drive’s center to the handle’s center mark) is altered. ABOUT TORQUE

A Torque Multiplier is a mechanism that increases torque in situations where a torque wrench may not have the capacity.

A multiplier works using a planetary gear system of one or more stages. Since it is required to multiply the torque while keeping the same power, this gearing system reduces speed.

In planetary gearing systems, torque is applied to the planetary gear carrier (3 or 4 gears) whose teeth are meshed with the outside housing that normally rotates in opposite direction to the gear carrier. A reaction arm prevents the house from rotating, causing the planet gears to orbit around the sun gear. This way, as planetary gears orbit around the sun gear, the output drive does the same.

Without the reaction arm holding the housing, the output drive would not apply any torque.

Newton’s law dictates that for each exerted force, an equal and opposite force is produced. In applications requiring relatively low torque that can be applied with a torque wrench, this is not a problem because the reaction is absorbed by the user.

However, if the desired torque requires the use of a multiplier, the resulting reaction can be absorbed only by an appropriate absorption mechanism.

For this reason torque multipliers are fitted with a reaction system.

A 2,500 Nm torque output will cause a 5,000 N reaction force at a point 0.5 m from the rotating axis, or of 2,500 N at 1 m.

The reaction force value depends on the perpendicular component of the distance between the reaction point and the multiplication axis; in other words, the greater the distance the lesser the force.

For this reason the reaction support point must be kept as far away from the mechanism’s housing axis as feasible.

SAFETY - The use of big levers may be dangerous. The torque multiplier reduces the leverage length and the operator’s effort.SPACE LIMITATIONS - The use of a long lever may be impossible due to the available space.PRECISION - The torque applied is far more precise when it can be applied softly and slowly. The torque multiplier allows this to happen by eliminating a lot of the needed physical effort to tighten.

Even though a longer reaction plate means a smaller force, the flexion torque close to the multiplier increases. So it must be taken in consideration that when increasing the arm’s total length, the reaction will reduce its resistance. This will cause defective resistance on the reaction and will produce smaller multiplica-tion ratios than the margin of error.

Torque MultiplierA torque multiplier is very useful when constructing and maintaining machinery and in the automotive industry, where a great deal of torque is required and the use of long levers is impossible or dangerous. In addition, it is more precise and eliminates physical effort.

TORQUE MULTIPLIERS A torque multiplier is a tool used to increase the value of torque applied using a predetermined ratio.

The principle behind it is similar to the transmission gearing in a gearbox or to the chain and sprocket assembly in a bicycle. It features a female square drive receiving the input torque and a male square drive, normally of bigger size, where the socket is fitted depending on the size of the nut or bolt to be turned. When the female square drive is rotated, usually using a torque wrench, the gearing system turns, making the male square move at a lower speed and increasing the resulting torque.

According to the multiplier reaction system, they are classified as follows:

• Multipliers with slave reaction system consisting of a sliding anchoring plate.

• Multipliers with a free reaction system consisting of a tubular bar.

NEEDLE TORQUE WRENCHES Convenient wrench for measuring torque with a gauge, allowing the user to quickly and precisely identify the torque applied. With 1/4” and 3/8” drives, this

category of torque wrenches has the capacity to measure applied torque through a needle rotating on a graduated gauge in metric as well as SAE units. It features a calibrated gauge in (in-lb) or (ft-lb) - (Nm) for big models and in (in-lb) - (Nm) for small models, and two needles, one indicating the applied torque and the other is a memory needle indicating what was the last maximum torque applied. The rotating gauge housing allows the user to choose between internal or external scales, depending on the way the torque will be applied or on the type of fastener thread. The external scale is used for right-threads and the internal scale for left-threads. All metal parts are made of tempered steel. The external parts have a nickel-chrome coating.

Instructions:Before using analog torque wrenches, also known as needle torque wrenches, it is recommended to use them 3 times to the maximum scale in the direction of torque they will be used. Analog torque wrenches must be zeroed before every use.

1. Turn the gauge housing until the needle is set to zero in the selected scale.2. Turn the memory needle knob until it is aligned to zero. If the main needle rotates to the right (for right-threads), the memory needle must be positioned

to the right side of the main needle, and vice versa for left torque.3. Apply force on the torque wrench handle until the blue follower needle reaches the desired torque. When the force is released, the orange drive needle

will return to zero and the memory follower needle will remain at the maximum value of torque applied.4. For operations with different torque values, the blue follower memory needle must be zeroed using the knob in each application.

On these types of torque wrenches, the desired torque is determined before carrying out the operation, and when the setpoint is reached, a clicking sound is produced, which can also be felt by the hand, indicating that the desired torque has been attained. When you stop applying torque, the torque wrench is already prepared for a new operation. It has calibrated scales in SAE and metric systems that are laser-etched on the handle. These are shown horizontally on the shaft and vertically on the handle so you can set the required torque.

Being designed for continuous use, it is an excellent precision tool for applying specific torque values.

Every part is made with tempered steel to resist wear. The external parts are nickel-chrome coated to prevent rust. The position of the ratchet’s head lever allows ratcheting clockwise or counter-clockwise, and a fixed position by setting the lever to the center.

1. Loosen the blocking screw with a 3/32” hexagonal wrench.2. Fit a T-handle hexagonal wrench through the hexagonal opening on the

end of the handle, until it couples with the adjustment screw.3. Place the wrench on a torque meter. Turn the adjustment screw

clockwise with the T-handle hexagonal wrench to increase torque and counter-clockwise to decrease it.

4. To set the torque, slowly apply a constant force on the preset wrench. Turn the adjustment screw until the desired torque value appears on the torque meter.

5. Tighten the blocking screw. To ensure the value can be set again, perform the cycle three more times. If the readings are not correct, repeat the steps.
