new york stage and film winter gala

Total Management were delighted to come on board as the new event coordination team for the New York Stage and Film Annual Winter Gala.

With a 6 month buildup of planning and logistics the night was one of the biggest and most successful yet, with tables selling out a week before the event. The Plaza ballroom once again set the scene for a decadent evening of champagne, dinner and incredible musical performances from Peter Gallagher, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Anika Noni Rose. Alongside these were moving and empowering speeches given by Business Honouree, Anne Tatlock and Artistic Honouree Stanley Tucci as to the significant and distinctive role New York Stage and Film plays in the development of new plays and talent for the American theatre by providing a platform for a diverse group of artists free from critical and commercial pressures. Now entering its 30th season, SAF has established itself as a vital cultural institution for residents of the New York metropolitan region and artists of the world.

Total Management assisted in curating their most successful silent auction to date with the introduction of our friends at iBid. Year one of introducing technology into the event saw a huge rise in the fundraising on the evening, no doubt in part to some of incredible lots donated by our generous partners including; Salvatore Ferragamo, Leading Hotels of the World, Gertrude,

seriousfun london gala

On 3rd December 2013, London hosted the first European SeriousFun Children’s Network Gala at the Iconic Roundhouse, Camden. It was a night for over 500 supporters and guests to kick back and “raise a little hell!”

SeriousFun Children’s Network was founded by actor and Philanthropist Paul Newman in 1988, SeriousFun Network is a growing community of 30 camps and programs serving children with serious illnesses and their families, always free of charge.

After walking the tree lined blue carpet, the evening began with a Champagne reception and canapés whilst overlooking the stunning dinner area, tented stage and beautifully decorated woodland tables. The evening was hosted and narrated by ‘The Campers’ who stole the show with their charming playfulness and light-hearted jokes. The campers ranged from 9 to 18 years old and their absolute love for camp shone throughout the evening. British beauty Keira Knightley and French actor François Cluzet friends of the charity supported the evening and both read a letter from a camper’s parent reminding the attendees of the real meaning of the event.

Kate Nash performed her new acoustic rendition of ‘Silent Night’ alongside her chart topper ‘Foundations’. Barretstown camper Joyce, who tragically lost one of her siblings to a serious illness, performed a song she wrote which moved the audience to a standing ovation which lasted what felt like 10 minutes! The live auction broke up the jam-packed entertainment with a spontaneous appearance from Israelian actor and theatrical performer Topol, who performed the fiddler on the roof classic ‘If I were a rich man’.

James Blunt impressed the audience with a medley of his new songs, and dedicated his classic ‘You’re Beautiful’ to Keira Knightley who blushed sweetly beside her husband, Klaxon’s singer James Righton.

With the guests replete, entertained and touched, the event concluded with a performance by The Who’s Roger Daltrey who got all the guests up on their feet. Guests left the night with brimming gift bags full of products from, Glossy box, Condenast Magazines, O.P.I Nail varnish, Elemis, Rana Argan Oil, Jo Jo Mama Bebe, Mon Apris, Aspire drinks, Batiste, and Metcalfe’s skinny popcorn.

An impressive £620,000 was raised to support SeriousFun’s camps and programmes around the world, enabling the charity to serve children at no cost to their families and to expand their reach. The experience of camp allows children to escape the fear, pain and isolation of living with illness and, as Paul put it, “raise a little hell.” This idea – taking fun seriously – helps children foster resilience, strength and confidence.

goUrmAndTotal Access’s quarterly e-zine which contains an informal but

informative guide to new and featured restaurants with insight from Total Access Account Managers

What to serve at our dinner tables over the festive season is not a matter to be taken lightly. At Total Access we agreed that it was a question only suited to a wine enthusiast par excellence – of these we know of one in particular: Peter Prescott.

For those in the know, Peter is one of London’s leading restaurateurs and has been the right hand man of Sir Terence Conran for many years. Co-founder and owner of the Boundary, Shoreditch’s emblematic establishment, Peter and his team of world renowned sommeliers have gone to great extents to showcase the world’s most fascinating and exiting wines via Château Boundary, a wine club open to enthusiast and amateurs alike.

Here are our tips, directly from the horse’s mouth...

The perfect Christmas Day aperitif is, of course, champagne. Over the last year, there has been a lot of interesting talk and focus on brilliant grower champagnes and if you can find them, I recommend fizz, especially the blanc de blancs, from Larmandier-Bernier or and Agrapart et Fils. Plus, Egly-Ouriet.

NV Egly-Ouriet, Vieillissement Prolongé Grand Cru, Extra Brut ‘This champagne is one of Egly’s top, displaying a pale gold colour, honeysuckle, white roses shine through on the nose. The palate is lively and fresh with characters of peach and white pepper.’

For the first course, which is ideally smoked fish with some soda bread, crab or scallops, you can’t beat white burgundy for a grown-up glass of wine. I’m a big fan of the 2010 vintage and bought quite a lot en primeur – for drinking, not selling. At this early stage in its life, I’d leave the grand cru for a few years, but most of the premier cru and village wines are now in perfect drinking condition. I’d recommend;

wine over the festive season

Peter Prescott’s festive selection

2010 Puligny-Montrachet, Domaine J.L. Chavy, Burgundy, France‘An engaging nose of subtle hints of vanilla, with striking freshness on the palate.’

For the main course, whatever you are eating, you should splash out on a big wine. The five first growths from the 1855 classification of Bordeaux might be a bridge too far, but the Super Seconds are just the ticket. Try;

1995 Château Léoville-Barton, 2ème Cru Classé, St-Julien, Bordeaux, France ‘A Cabernet driven wine with good depth with concentrated blackcurrant fruit. Nice grip on the palate with a well-integrated tannic structure.’

2008 Château Rauzan-Ségla, 2ème Cru Classé, Margaux, Bordeaux, France‘A great example of a second growth and a firm favourite of mine, berry fruit dominates on the nose with the addition of leather and cigar box. The palate is flavoursome with a long a grippy finish.’

As alternative to Bordeaux, head to the Rhone. There are good things to be had from the north and south.

2007 Côte-Rôtie, La Barbarine, M&Y Gangloff, Northern Rhone, France‘A peppery and herbaceous character on the nose. Black olive and hints of berry fruit on the palate. A fine example from the Northern Rhone.’

2009 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieille Vigne, Domaine de Marcoux, Southern Rhone, France‘A blend dominated by Grenache and Mourvèdre, has a rich spicy and juicy character with tarred leather.’

The reds will probably see you through the cheese and then you can turn to something sweet. Of course, there is Sauternes and you could also look out for something more interesting such as this unusual Eisween made with Merlot grapes.

2011 Merlot Eiswein, Jonanneshof Reinisch, Thermenregion‘Wild forest fruits dominate on the nose, with a touch of forest honey. Great with Christmas Pudding.’

As you retire to your favourite armchair, a glass of port might do the job. 1970 is my birth year and also my favourite vintage.

1970 Graham’s Vintage‘The palate is very harmonious and elegant; fleshy and seductive on the palate with allspice and nutmeg. Freshly rolled tobacco on the aftertaste, good length and simply great!’

Berners Tavern, it would seem is to join the ranks of 2013’s most anticipated openings, with the joint forces of Ian Schrager (Edition Hotels) and Jason Atherton, it had the makings of a winner from the outset. The third restaurant of Jasons’s London collection, Berners Tavern has stepped away from the mould and is decadent, luxurious and oh so British!

Chateaubriand

Being amongst the best 50 restaurants in the world, Chateaubriand is very much the place to be at the moment. It has been stripped of all the French fine dining connotations and has gone back to the basics in terms of decor. Small, wooden, square tables lined up against banquettes, chequered tiles and a chubby wooden bar sits at the entrance lurking over diners. Certainly à la mode in terms of menu – picky eaters please stir away – as the one-size-fits-all tasting menu is designed for those who are willing to be guided though the contemporary French cuisine.

A gastro-tour-de-force around Paris would not be fulfilled without a stop by a bistro; any bistro just can’t cut it, an Alan Ducasse one on the

other hand... Here decor and menu take on traditional France but with modern finesse.

Spring

There is a good degree of scepticism when an American opens a restaurant in Paris, yet Head Chef Daniel Rose must have done something right to impress the stuffy restaurant scene that Paris can be. His story is impressive all together; leaving hometown Chicago to train as a professional cook around France, he arrived to Paris to embark on his first venture. One big table and the kitchen just in front of it, it was, to start, a one-man-job he says, ‘cooking and serving at the same time’. Then came along an abandoned skate shop which he took over when business was going just fine for him. An open plan kitchen, a restaurant laid over two floors but the best discovery was yet to be made. As the works in Spring were coming along they came across an ancient cellar beneath the basement floor, today excellent for private wine tastings. Put all of this in prospect of traditional French architecture in the 1st arrondissement and you might just get the picture.

Coming back to the food, well, there is a two month waiting list for a table...we guess this is a hint.

Silencio

Everyone that decides to head to Silencio on a Saturday evening may be forgiven for being slightly intimidated, after all not everyone gets in. To enter the creative hub it’s all a matter of being the perfect fit, and here it is; it’s not about being flashy rather it’s all about being trés cool. Designed by artist and filmmaker David Lynch, the experience for those who make the cut is something quite startling, or so they say...

Interview with Social Eating House Bar Manager, Gary Evans.

What inspired you to walk into the industry?I’d like to say it was to be creative and follow my dream but unfortunately it was because I needed the money and I wanted to impress a girl. I did not impress the girl, but I’m still here 13 years later though so must have done something right! What is it about the London restaurant scene that keeps you excited? I think the amount of talent and diversity in the industry in London is amazing, and the fact that the consumers are so knowledgeable is what makes it such an inviting place to work. You can be incredibly daring with what you’re putting out, and as long as it’s good, there is a market for it. What is your match made in heaven: tell us about your favourite concoction and why it works so well together...Sounds boring but the Negroni. It’s the perfect cocktail – it’s simple, anyone can make it and it’s almost impossible to mess it up. There’s something about the way the sweet vermouth, bitter Campari and strong gin wortk together which is exactly what cocktails should be.

It’s greater than the sum of its parts and that’s all you can ask for.

What was the most wacky invention you came up with?At the Alternative Bar Awards last year I won an award called the ‘Shut up and make me a f**king Negroni’ award for the most ridiculous drink in London. Its tongue in cheek but it is kind of out there – Sotol (organic tequila-type spirit), lemon, carrot, cumin, honey and coriander cress. Still got that award, very proud of it. What cannot be missing in our bar cabinets this winter? I am a massive fan of Somerset Cider brandy. The 10 year is an amazing spirit and it’s something that us British drinkers should be proud of. Fernet Branca; it might taste a bit odd at first but stick with it, it’s a great digestive and one of those tastes that grows on you. Lastly, something to celebrate with, and a nice Scotch will do the trick very nicely thank you. I would suggest Lagavulin 1995 distillers’ edition, which has an additional 6 months in Pedro Ximinez casks to mellow the smoke and peat in the 16 year expression. A bit tough to find but worth seeking out. Which cocktail shall we start the New Year with?Have to be something light after all that partying so I would suggest a Pendennis: gin, lime, bitters and apricot brandy, shake then served straight up.

upcoming event: gabrielle’s gala 2014

It has been a busy time for Total Access on both sides of the pond since the last edition of The Journal. Account Managers have been darting back and forth to various events across Europe and the US, sourcing the best there is in luxury lifestyle and travel.

Autumn kicked off with a bang as we jetted off to LA to set up as the on site concierge team for Salvatore Ferragamo at their anniversary event. With clients heading from all over the world, Total Access provided the travel arrangements, transfers, hotels and all their lifestyle needs throughout the event. This phenomenal event encapsulated all that Total Access is about – luxury lifestyle and travel at its most chic!

The Autumn saw us spending the day in Paris utilising our bi-lingual team to put together the best recommendations for a dinner in this beautiful city for a top US based client. In a city where food is the soul, this was no mean feat – the journey took us to tiny wine cellars where the chef both cooks and serves the food to a private tour of Georges as the sun set over the Eiffel tower. After choosing a small Alain Ducasse restaurant Total Access organised a hugely successful dinner with bespoke menus, autumnal floral designs and luxurious Pierre Hermé macaroons gift boxes to take home.

Following a busy summer organising the annual New York summit for a US based client, November saw all our hard work fall into place. With over 400 clients descending on the city to enjoy a week long summit, Total Access was on

hand every step of the way. From preferential rates at hotels across Manhattan, to an exclusive dinner at Lafayette on the Lower East Side. From meetings and events throughout the week to a full blown after party at Jay Z’s 40/40 club, Total Access manned the guest lists, the logistics, the event planning and the hospitality for all their needs and specifications across the city.

As Christmas drew in, we were not to be defeated by a lack of imagination for ways to celebrate. Our team have arranged a private hire of Lapland UK for a child’s Christmas experience, with private husky drawn sleigh rides, ice skating and present giving with the elves. For the adults, there have been private wine tours and sommelier experiences to ensure only the best wines for the festive period. We have interviewed top restaurateurs and sommeliers to ensure our members get only the best recommendations of how to enjoy wine and champagne with all the culinary challenges that Christmas provides. We have continued to source the hottest restaurants in both NYC and London to offer the best spots to celebrate the holiday season and for those wanting to stay in the comfort of their own homes, we have organised canapé parties and catering for a variety of festive needs.

Needless to say it has been a busy, adventurous and fantastic six months – we have covered more ground than we have before

and developed long standing relationships with some fantastic clients and venues.

So for any inspiration or ideas ranging from the perfect dinner spot for two, to entertaining over three hundred clients abroad – we are confident we have it covered!
