Total Suspended Solid (TSS)
Principle: A well-mixed sample is filtered through a weighted standard glass fiber filter and
the residue retained on the filter is dried to a constant weight at 103-105oC.
Apparatus: Membrane filter funnel, Filtration apparatus with reservoir and coarse (40- to
60- µm) fritter disk as filter support. Suction flask of sufficient capacity for sample size
selected, Drying oven for operation at 103-105oC, Desiccator, Analytical balance capable of
weighting to 0.1mg.
Procedure:
1. Pretreatment filter: filtrate 100ml dW through filter with filtration apparatus and
remove filter to an inert planchet.
2. Dry filter and planchet at 102-105 oC for 2hrs
3. Remove and store in a desiccator for 20 mins to balance temperature and weigh,
weight dried filter and planchet.
4. Install dried filter and begin suction, and filtrate 100ml of well-mixed sample
5. Dry filter and planchet at 102-105 oC for 2hrs
6. Remove and store in a desiccator for 20 mins to balance temperature and weigh,
weight dried filter and planchet.
Duplicate determinations should agree within 5% of their average.
Caculation:
(A-B) x 1000
SS (mg/L) =
Sample volume, mL
Where: A= weight of filter + dried residue, mg, and
B= weight of filter, mg
