ALPE DI SIUSI HUT TOUR

direct route to Saltria, but takes a detour around the Wolfsbühel, a rise to the west of the Jender Valley. The beautiful pastu-reland represents the Seiser Alm/Alpe di Siusi at its fi nest. The Sanon Hut is the fi rst opportunity for refreshments, with the excellent food a fi tting reward for the short extension to the tour (250m to the right at waymarker 42). The next few kilometres off er four more huts – a diffi cult choice indeed! After a short stretch on the road towards

VARIATIONS1. More huts: a longer and more challen-ging tour is possible by heading straight for Compatsch/Compaccio at waymar-ker 46 instead of going sharp left to the Hotel Steger Dellai. Pass the Zorzi Hotel and the Jaggl Schwaige Hut to the Spitz-bühel car park, then up to Spitzbühel and via the Laurin Hut to the Alpenhotel Panorama where you rejoin the tour de-scribed above at waymarker 50.

2. Via the Dialer Church to the Zallin-ger Hut: a further climb is possible if, instead of taking a sharp left after the Mahlknecht Hut at waymarker 57, you go straight uphill to the Dialer Church where you bear left onto the high-level route and, after 1.5 km, take a sharp left in the direction of Saltria. After 1.4 km you rejoin the climb up to the Zallinger at waymarker 60.

3. More trails: do not bear right at the Almrosen Hut but rather bear left onto hiking trail 12 to Saltria, then take trail 12A for Tirler. You rejoin the tour descri-bed above at waymarker 58.

Compatsch/Compaccio, you turn off onto a wonderful high-level route with an idyllic view of the Schlern/Sciliar, allowing you to reach the Alpenhotel Panorama (380m from waymarker 50). Although a hotel should not, strictly speaking, form part of a “hut tour”, the short detour is a must as the hotel off ers a 360° view not just of the nearby sum-mits such as the Langkofel/Sassolungo, Plattkofel/Sassopiatto, Marmolada, Sel-la Group, Sas Rigais, the Geisler/Odle

peaks, Rosszähne/Denti di Terra Rossa and Schlern/Scili-ar with the Santner Spire, but on a clear day you can the Zillertal and Stubaier Alps or even the Ortler/Ortles!The climb continues, past the traditional Almrosen Hut and up to the highest point of the tour just before the Mahl-knecht Hut. You must decide which of the many huts you will visit: not for nothing is this called the “Hut Tour”.A fast descent of some 300m towards Tirler is followed by a climb on a gravel road in the direction of the Zallinger Hut, a real gem: the view from its terrace to the south-east reveals the “fl at” face of the Plattkofel/Sassopiatto, lit by the afternoon sun, while to the south-west is the panora-

ma of the Plattkofel/Sassopiatto Hut, Pa-latsch/Palacia, the Mahlknecht Hut and the Rosszähne/Denti di Terra Rossa. The next 12 kilometres are largely down-hill in full view of the Plattkofel/Sasso-piatto and Langkofel/Sassolungo until, tired but happy, you return to your star-ting point in Wolkenstein/Selva.
