nifi cent views from the terraces of one or other of the wonderfully located huts en route. The second part of the tour takes

you to the Tschafon/Monte Cavone which, with the Hammer-wand/Croda del Ma-glio and the Schlern/Sciliar, forms a true rocky amphitheatre: bikers can ride to the protruding rock of Tschafon/Monte Ca-vone and marvel at the giant rock faces at close range.Away from the main road take the trail to St. Konstantin/Saint Costantino, an unhur-ried warm-up. Then it is up to the Völser Weiher/Laghetto di Fiè, not on the busy “normal” road to the lake but rather on the car-free alternative from the north, at fi rst on tarmac then on a track through wood-land.You suddenly arrive at the banks of the Völser Weiher/La-ghetto di Fiè, next to the guesthouse of

the same name. You can stop for refresh-ments or dive into the picturesque lake

immediately below the Schlern/Sciliar. A little further on is a bathing cabin with a large jetty.Continue upwards to the next lake, the Huber Weiher/Laghetto Huber, then ascend 200m through the forest to the Malga Tuff Alm, whose panoramic terra-ce is an ideal place to restore your ener-gy.After a short descent across the pasture, a gravel path, very steep in places, leads to the highest point of the tour, the rope-way up to the Schlernhaus/Bolzano Hut. The fi rst part of this ascent is marked as suitable for pushing, but super-fi t bikers

can of course ride it!A few bends further down through the forest and you bear off to the Malga Ho-fer Alpl in its peaceful, secluded location: if you have not already done so, now is the time to stop and admire the brea-thtaking panorama as far as the moun-tains of the Texel/Tessa Group, 50 km away. You subsequently lose a good deal of the height gained on a fast downhill stretch to Umes. Fill up your water bottles at the fountain above the village, as here, under the Hammerwand/Croda del Ma-glio, is the start of the long climb to the

1. A much shorter tour, omitting the Tschafonleger panorama: do not take a sharp left at waymarker 40 but go up along the gravel path past the succes-sive right-hand bend. After 850m and a descent of 100m you reach the Umser Strasse/Umes road, which you follow right to the Fiè roundabout. Continue the tour to waymarker 77 (-14.0 km, -700m altitude).

2. Extension via Aica di Fiè and Presu-le: turn sharp left at waymarker 60 and climb to the main road, then sharp right

Tschafonleger panorama: altogether something more than 400m of altitude diff erence in shady woodland that, apart from the short climb at the very end, is all very pleasant to ride. The protruding rock of Monte Cavone/Tschafon is itself not very spectacular, but – good news for bikers – there is also a water source here. The following descent presents no pro-blems of a riding technique nature. The hiking trails to the valley of the Val di Tires, the gateway to the Rosengarten/Gruppo del Catinaccio, off er plenty of ri-ding fun. This brings you to the Gasthaus Schönblick, a welcome stop for refresh-ments with a stunning view over the Val di Tires. If you stop for a short time on the descent on a narrow road leading to Tschötscher and look back you can see some of the peaks of the Rosengar-ten/Gruppo del Catinaccio. The route continues climbing gently again to the Schnaggenkreuz , a wonderful vanta-ge point with a view of the complete amphitheatre of mountains from the Schlern/Sciliar as far as Tschafon/Monte Cavone. You carry on climbing once more for a short while through woodland to the sawmill at Ums/Umes. The old road from Umes to Fiè forms the crowning glory of this tour! This idyllic, mostly gravel, sec-tion leads through cropped fi elds and meadows past old farmhouses to Völs/

on the road towards Aica di Fiè. After 1.5km, near the bus stop, bear right along the trail in the direction of Presu-le. Here, near the Maso Pröslerhof, take a right towards Umes, reaching waymar-ker 69 on the tour described above at the beginning of the old road between Umes and Fiè.

3. Directly down from the Schnaggen-kreuz to Umes: at waymarker 62, directly behind the Schnaggenkreuz, bear left onto the gravel path to Umes that leads into the road between Presule. Turn right and follow the road to waymarker 69 of the tour described above, taking a

sharp left.

4. Omitting the Kon-stantiner Weiher/Laghetto di Saint Costantino: at the fork (waymarker 92) do not bear left but instead bear right to go directly to the Maso Fallhof, from which you continue the tour sharp right from waymarker 101.

Fiè in beautiful afternoon sunshine if the weather is fi ne. If you wish you can visit the picturesque village centre or stop for a break. Now continue to Sant‘ Antonio, where you bear off down to Novale di Fiè. Pass through this peaceful village and, short-ly before Saint Costantino, take a small detour to the remote lake, the Konstan-tiner Weiher/Laghetto di Saint Costanti-no. A good sense of direction is helpful to navigate around the lake and along to the Maso Fallhof farm. The stretch from the Maso Fallhof to San Vigilio is perfect for skilled riders: narrow trails and a short but steep (up to 25%) path through the forest all guarantee fun and excitement. Further uphill you reach the idyllic Malenger Mühle mill with its small but very interesting corn museum. You return to Siusi via the Maso Fur-scherhof.From Siusi you follow the main road briefl y uphill in the direction of Castelrotto, but soon turn off to the Laranzwald/Laranza wood. You ride past the Telfen sports centre to the Misaltweg path, where you will have to dismount for a short while as the narrow hiking trail that takes you back to Castelrotto, the desti-nation of the fi rst stage of the Dolo-mite Wild WoMen Trek, is too steep and interspersed with steps.
