Visit the Highlands Nature Sanctuary The Arc of Appalachia’s Largest Preserve
The Arc of Appalachia is a not-for-profit nature preserve system in the Appalachian foothills of southern Ohio. The Arc’s wildlands-preservation efforts have established protected natural areas in seven counties, including Highland County - home of the Highlands Nature Sanctuary. The Arc’s mission is to provide natural sanctuaries where people can connect with the natural world, as well as create safe refuges for Ohio’s native ecosystems - protecting the state’s rich biodiversity of native plants and animals.
Supported by grants and private donations, the Arc has purchased over 5000 acres of native forest, wetlands, and prairies in Ohio in 17 preserves - protecting dozens of rare and endangered species. By the end of 2017, a total of eight of the Arc’s preserves will be open free to the public - offering 32 miles of hiking trails in some of Ohio’s most awe-inspiring landscapes (with more scheduled to open in the near future).
Highland County is home to the Arc’s largest and oldest preserve - the 2500 acre Highlands Nature Sanctuary. The breathtakingly beautiful Rocky Fork Gorge runs through the center of the Sanctuary. The steep-walled canyon is renowned for its stunning rock formations, ancient white cedar trees, grottos, springs, and stone arches. The deepest section of the canyon runs parallel to historic Cave Road near the town of Bainbridge, spanning both Ross & Highland Counties.
Rocky Fork Gorge at the SanctuaryPhoto by Tom Croce
From April through October from 9:30 - 5:00, the Sanctuary offers many miles of hiking trails, leading to waterfalls, wildflower-laden glens, hemlock groves, and canyon bluffs. Hikers are gifted with the rare opportunity of experiencing near solitude on these quiet paths. Hiking trail information is available at the Sanctuary’s hub - the Appalachian Forest Museum, located on Cave Road.
The Sanctuary is recognized regionally for its outstanding displays of spring wildflowers which can be best viewed during the annual Wildflower Pilgrimage, a weekend of guided field trips in mid-April. The Highlands Nature Sanctuary provides critical habitat for animals, too. Its meadows shelter what is perhaps the largest population of Henslow’s sparrows in the entire U.S., a grassland bird in serious decline. The Sanctuary has also rewilded some of Ohio’s last remaining cave ecosystems - providing habitat for four bat species, all but one of which are teetering on extirpation or even extinction.
You can visit the Highlands Nature Sanctuary for the day, or enjoy one of several historic overnight lodges which have been fully renovated into handsome nature retreats, ranging from secluded 2-person suites to five-bedroom group lodges.
For more information on visiting the Arc’s preserves, see www.arcofappalachia.org. The Sanctuary is located one mile south of Highway 50, four miles west of Bainbridge.
Hiking trail information is available at the Sanctuary’s hub - the Appalachian Forest Museum, located on Cave Road.

headquarters to the historical society. It sits next to the grounds of the cemetary, where a local resident has complet-ed over 200 stone renovations and repairs.
Smith Tannery Established in 1821, is the oldest existing tannery building
in Ohio. Take a tour of this building set up as an old home.
Grain & HayThis building played a major role in providing farm and
hardware products to area residents. Among the cultural displays housed here is the McClain Library, a collection of yearbooks from Edward Lee McClain High School as well as photographs and memorabilia organized by class year. If you’re a graduate or just curious as to what your graduation year holds, stop in and find out. This building is available for rental to host your next class or family reunion.
Konnecker Education Museumbelieved to be the first two-room schoolhouse in the State
of Ohio, this building houses historical education pieces. This is a favorite for children, as they are encouraged to explore the books while sitting at the desks and visioning what school was like there. The society uses the museum for various functions, and it can be rented by community resi-dents for meetings or social events.
The Greenfield Historical Society is known for its annual events and activities. Look for more details at http://www.greenfieldhistoricalsociety.org/ or on Facebook @greenfield-historicalsociety
B&O Railroad DepotOnce an active transpor-
tation hub, the depot was moved from its original loca-tion. This building houses Greenfield’s contribution to the military. Currently a work in progress is the Tom Adams Train Display, a fas-cinating piece of work with intricate details of the town.
