4 JULY 2011

July is Gold Rush month. Lots of your fellow family members will be celebrating 24 years of Family Reunions up in the great state of Michigan at Boyne Mountain resort.Boyne Mountain is located in the picturesque mountains of upper Michigan close to the great lakes. Our Theme this year is “International Summit” where you represent your Chapter, State and or Region by dressing or wearing signage that makes you and your area unique. Show your friends what pride is all about in you neck of the woods.

Having recently spent time in the mountains I wanted to warn you of some of the side effects of mountain travels. When you travel to a higher elevation such as at Gold Rush your body may experience different feelings such as: • Light headedness- This may cause uncontrollable laughter when seeing old

friends after extended periods of time.

• Loosening and weakness of your muscles - This will most likely cause a continuous smile on your face during the whole week as you experience Fun activities such as Frozen T shirt contest, Talent Show, Movie Night, Demo Rides of new Wings, Spiders and Harley’s, Pajama Night and many more.

• Gasping for air- This will probably occur as you watch the Drill Team Perform or you take advantage of our Friendship Rides through the Michigan countryside on Wednesday our designated Ride day.

• Cravings for high caloric foods - This can most easily be rectified by eating lots of ice cream by riding the Chair Lift to the top of the Mountain to eat ice cream on the Summit. Or you may prefer to eat ice cream and fudge in the shops downtown Boyne City after the Light Parade.

If you do not get a chance to attend Gold Rush be sure to ask someone who did to share in their fun experiences. Membership Price Lock is available for every member that is a current member until Sept. 1st 2011. If your expiration date is somewhere after Sept. 1st you already have your membership locked. This is a great time to get your friends and fellow non-members to join. In the near future we will have to stop non-members from continually attending our Chapter, State and Region functions because of liability reasons. They are costing you money. Get them to take advantage of the Price Lock as our dues will be increasing. If you have any questions please contact your respective Regional Director for more details. P lease remember our unfor tunate members that have had sickness and accidents this year. Keep them in your thoughts and prayers as we all strive for one common bond, “ Destination Friendship”. Starting off in our own home State of Michigan, being hosted right in our own back yard is Gold Rush 2011 in Boyne Falls, Michigan! Moving up to the Buck eye state Ohio holds so much for you. Ohio has over 174,000 acres of State Parks. You can visit one of more than 100 wineries throughout the state, or hear the clip-clop of an Amish buggy in Amish Country home to the world’s largest Amish population. You can find out more about our music heritage by visiting the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame or discover our rich space and aviation history through Ohio notables such as the Wright Brothers, John Glenn and Neil Armstrong. The Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum offers excitement and education for everyone, with unique exhibits showcasing some of the most elegant and remarkable designs and technologies from motor cycling’s past and present. See why motorcycles have long been on the cutting edge of transportation and motorsports.Ohio’s landscape is the perfect palette for touring visitors; the shores of Lake Erie offer a coastal feel, perfect for soaking up the sun’s rays, while the Hocking Hills region, nestled on the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, provides rock cliffs, gorges and the perfect getaway for nature enthusiasts.

In beautiful Pennsylvania we end our ride. On your next road trip, break away from the highway and take a drive down one of Pennsylvania’s 18 scenic byways.

Like escaping to Pennsylvania’s very own seashore, the Seaway Trail offers excellent views of Lake Erie and Presque Isle State Park a 3,200-acre peninsula. Ride through the Buck Trail were you can Travel through unspoiled forests and rugged vistas through the heart of the Pennsylvania Wilds. Your voyage will take you from Lock Haven to historic Ridgway along the Old Sinnemahoning Trail, a Native American road tucked between the West Branch Susquehanna and Allegheny Rivers. Watch for elk herds in nearby Winslow Hill.

In southwestern Pennsylvania, America’s first federally-funded highway is mile after gorgeous mile of history, wildlife, and culture. The Historic National Road is a topographic wonder, with its roots in early trails cut through the woods by Indians marking paths for George Washington and General Braddock. The Whiskey Rebellion started here in the 1790’s, and in the 1800’s the road opened the land west of the Alleghenies to pioneers and traders.

Slow down and hit must-see attractions like Fort Necessity National Battlefield, where the French and Indian War began in 1754, and Braddock’s gravesite. Save time for the Addison and Searights Tollhouses, the “S” bridge, stone taverns and inns, and Brownsville with its Northside Historic District. Nearby, Nemacolin Castle overlooks the Monongahela River and recalls the town’s boomtown heyday.

Look forward to visiting with you in Region “F” where the F stands for Fun!

15TOURING NEWS

MichiganAs most everyone knows, Michigan is the host for Gold Rush XXIV for 2011. This will happen in Boyne Falls, MI, at the Boyne Mountain Resort in the northern Lower Peninsula. I can tell you this is a great state to tour. I have toured every state in the US and all the Canadian provinces on the top of my Gold Wing. Yes, that includes Alaska and Hawaii. I don’t perceive myself to be an expert, but I will tell you this; this is a great country to travel in. Each of our 50 states has exciting roads to travel, features great places to visit and amazing sites to see from shore to shore. Touring and travel, as my chapter will tell you, is “all about Ron”. I even have a badge to prove it, my small claim to fame. Every state has something to offer, even Lebanon, Kansas, which has a park that is the center of the continental United States. You can find the park along the old pony express trail on US-36.

Seriously, because I’m a little prejudiced and this is my home, Michigan has many great places to ride and many sites to see. As a motorcycle tourist, it is hard to pass up riding the tunnel of trees or Brockway Mountain near Copper Harbor in the Upper Peninsula. For viewing, there is nothing like the Mackinaw Bridge or the Sault Sainte Marie Locks. These are just a few places to visit and see. There are just too many places to list. Soooo…… my suggestion is to you, put on your schedule Gold Rush (July 25-28th); you won’t be disappointed. Come enjoy all the pleasures of Michigan. And the summer temperatures are usually in the mid eighties.

Eric Larson has dedicated a web site for Gold Rush: www.goldrush2011.org

And, if by chance you need more information, you can visit: www.michigan.org

The state of Michigan offers many opportunities to ride, including circle tours around Lake Michigan, Lake Huron and Lake Superior, where there are many lighthouses to visit. If for some reason you can’t make Gold Rush, you can always visit us for Spring Fling (March), Michigan State Rally (Evart, MI - June 24-26th) and the spectacular Fall Color Tour (Gaylord, MI Oct 8 -11th). As most will tell you, we are about riding, eating and camaraderie. If you attend fall color don’t be surprised, you could catch a few snowflakes. Michigan is for the hardy riders.

We hope you can make Gold Rush XXIV. Visit Eric Larson’s www.goldrush2011.org

The site explores Michigan and Gold Rush.

Wednesday during Gold Rush has been set aside for touring, enjoy the ride!

Hope to see you there,

KentuckyWhile Kentucky has always been known for its beautiful women and fast horses, our majestic lakes, unspoiled rivers and impressive mountains beckon with unbridled adventure. Bourbon distilleries, the home of Makers Mark bourbon distillery in Lebanon, wineries, horse farms, the Corvette plant and museum in Bowling Green, Lake Cumberland in south central Kentucky, and big-city entertainment also invite you to our Commonwealth. Everywhere you’ll feel the world-famous hospitality and “unbridled spirit” of our people.

The year 2011 is an auspicious time to visit Ken-tucky. It marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Bill Monroe, the father of Bluegrass music, and is the 75th anniversary of Keeneland horse track in Lexington. Those of you who attended Gold Rush XXII in Kentucky in 2009 will re-member Keeneland where the GWTA logo was staged, beautiful downtown Lexington which housed the host hotel, and the winding roads that ramble through the lush green hillsides making Kentucky a motorcyclist’s dream come true to ride. The sesquicentennial of the Civil War is also being observed at several key sites. Less than ten short miles west of Somerset, is the newly erected Mill Springs Battlefield Visitor Center & Museum commemorating one of the first battles of the Civil War in 1862.

In July, Kentucky Speedway in Sparta will host its inaugural NASCAR Spring Cup race. The Breeders’ Cup, thoroughbred racing’s most prestigious competition, will be held at Louisville’s Churchill Downs in November. Churchill Downs is also home of the Kentucky Derby held each May.

If you ‘hanker’ for a great ride this summer, do plan your motorcycle trip to Kentucky!

19TOURING NEWS

Hello from the Keystone State,

Pennsylvania has seen our membership increase almost 400% in the past year and it’s still growing. We’ve gone from one chapter to four and hope to start more chapters in the future. With this growth, we’ve noticed some growing pains with our new members getting used to a different style of operations: members having to adjust to a laid back freedom that most haven’t experienced before, one of which is a reverse chain of com-mand, where members are getting accustomed to having a say in the operations of their chapter and of over-all organizational operations; members elected into position now wearing the designation of officer having offered to donate their time and leadership skills to help implement the wishes of their chapter members by majority vote; the now-appointed Chapter Directors having the State Directors’ support to assist them should the need arise. This being said, a whole new respect for chapter officers and their staff to donate their time, efforts, talents and experience to meet the wishes of the membership has evolved and a big thanks goes out to them. We’ve noticed that the biggest hurdle to overcome with the new members is to adjust to the overall freedom of speech and control they now have. The feedback we have received from the majority of members is very positive - how they enjoy the relaxed atmosphere within chapter life. Time will make a difference in these chapters.

Now we’re looking forward to the first Pennsylvania State Rally which will be held September 15-18, 2011 in the scenic area of Cook Forest State Park at the Kalyumet Campground in Lucinda (western Pennsylvania). We will be offering a variety of activities such as many scenic rides (self and guided), people games, hospital-ity area, etc., all with a Hawaiian Holiday theme. We’re looking forward to seeing a lot of Pennsylvanians and meeting members from other states and regions. For a registration form, contact us at [email protected].

We are fortunate to have many talented and experienced chap-ter officers and their staff and would like to thank them for all their hard work. All four chapters (B, J, Y and Z) have excelled this past year and we look forward to their continued growth in the coming year. A special thanks goes out to our Assistant State Directors, Don and Patty Hoffman, and staff members, Donna Thorne, Treasurer, and Peggy Kratz, Public Relations, for their outstanding perfor-mance. With their help and dedication, we were able to accomplish a successful growth here in Pennsylvania.

In closing, we would like to thank all the members in Pennsyl-vania, Region F and National for making us feel welcome in this organization and giving us support when we asked for it. Now we’re looking forward to attending the State, Region and National rallies this summer and meeting new G.W.T.A. friends.

200,000 Miles On A Gold Wing

It is uncommon to find any motorcycle with 100,000 miles on the odometer. To find one with 200,000 is even more astounding.

Meet Dusty Webb, a member of the Northwest Wings Drill Team, Chapter D of Washington State Gold Wing Touring Association, and his red 2000 GL1500. On a recent trip to Walla Walla, Dusty pulled off the road near the Snoqualmie Summit (elevation 3022 feet), and took a picture of his dash when the bike had eclipsed the distinction of 200,000 miles.

Dusty has had the bike, and been a member of GWTA, since October of 2010, and put on a little less than 17,000 miles in that short time. Jerry Weltner, the bike’s previous owner who put over 183,000 miles on the bike, was with Dusty at the summit, and took pleasure in the moment as well.

But the ride doesn’t stop there. Dusty continued another 600 miles just that day, and has plans that take him to San Francisco in June, and over to the Washington State Gathering in Port Townsend later, and many other rides with the Northwest Wings throughout the year.

“I know that to keep any machine running, you have to take care of it,” tells Dusty. “I do all my own regular maintenance, and will look forward to making 300,000 miles before I give up this bike.”

Keep the dirty side down, Dusty!

21TOURING NEWS

Alligators & CrawfishMotorcycle riders refer to 'rubber alligators' on the road to identify a tire. But the Louisiana highways have a new meaning for alligator. Yes, we saw a road kill alligator on I-10 down by Baton Rouge. One of our stops was to Insta-gator Ranch & Hatchery located in Covington, LA. You get a guided tour, hands on (yep, you touch the alligators), picture holding a 4 foot al-ligator and more. The alligators we touch and hold have the mouth taped shut with electrical tape. Lots of electrical tape. I picked up baby alligators (7-10 months) from a small pool. The tour guide will lay a 4 foot alligator on you lap for a picture (mouth taped shut!). You walk thru the alligator huts with several pens full of alligators, mouth not taped shut so keep your hands/fingers to yourself. Very educational and a must see stop if you like animals. If you go, call ahead because the tours fill up 985-892-3669 (www.Insta-gatorRanch.com)

Crawfish, my first thought was what part of the cow is that? I'm from the Midwest and we eat beef. We visited a high school class mate from many, many years ago in Lake Providence, LA and they showed us how to eat crawfish. For the record, I did not suck the juice from the head, I only ate the meat! The meat is the tail, but you do do a lot of work to get to that little piece of meat. In summary, it tastes like weak lobster meat. I like crawfish so much, I found a Louisiana native restaurant in Wichita, KS called Da Cajun Shak, which they serve fried crawfish, alligator, shrimp and catfish. Tastes just like you are in Louisiana.

We also stopped at Frogmore, LA for a tour of a cotton plantation. The buildings, tools and history is very interesting. A very good book to read on slavery is “Twelve Years A Slave” by Solomon Northup. The cotton planta-tion is a working plantation now with machines, but they leave 5 rows of cotton to allow you the opportunity to pick cotton. You get to tour the 1850 machines and the current 21st century large industrial machines. In Louisiana the cotton is 'white gold'.

In between the tours, we rode the entire state from the Texas border from Beaumont, TX to Covington, LA with side trips down highway 27 to the Gulf of Mexico, across a ferry from Holly Beach and back up to highway 14. Interstate 10 is awesome between Lafayette and Baton Rouge as you are traveling over the marsh. For those from Wichita, it's just like the canal route, but it is water under the road. I really liked this stretch of road!

When we went inland into Louisiana we took highway 10 to New Roads, which we road another ferry to cross the Mississippi River. Our trip was in April and the Mississippi River was not over flowing. We passed several cemeteries with the graves above ground. We only had rain one day and that morning we spent waiting in a John Deere Dealership, Goldman Equipment in Waterproof, LA as we waited for the rain storm to pass. It rained several inches and came down in sheets. I was happy to find a dry place to wait out the cold rain and the bikes were in the dealership buildings staying dry.

I'm ready to head back to Louisiana to take a swamp tour and see the area around New Orleans. Our total trip was 2,380 miles, which included visits to family in Dallas and Houston Texas.
